Classic Game Room - AFTER BURNER III Sega CD review 

The reason the gameplay is so different is because of the weird history behind the game. Its actually a port of an arcade game called Strike Fighter, which was a sequel the arcade game G-LOC: Air Battle, which itself was a spiritual successor to After Burner II. The reason it's called After Burner III is just for brand recognition, even though its more of a port of the sequel to the spiritual successor of After Burner than it is a true sequel. IMO, I would say that Climax is the true AB3.

I like how the intro mentions the 'million dollar missiles', and then lets you never stop shooting them. It's a dream come true!

This game has great music. If i ever would get a Sega CD i am gonna get this game for sure!

Yup, this is basically the sequel to G-Loc Air Battle, but with the After Burner name because G-Loc didn't exactly do well (and was a spiritual successor to After Burner as well). They REALLY did do an excellent job of producing the music, though. It's super hard to reproduce the overall feel of the crunchy synth the arcade cabinet had while tossing real instruments into the mix.

Yeah, I remember a friend having this game long ago; we expected it to be 90% as good as the arcade original; the music is 200% of the arcade, but the game play is less then 50%, CGR got it right on the money with this review.

This game is actually a home port of the arcade game G-LOC but not many knew about that game. More people knew the name "After Burner". There is even a fully rotatable arcade version called R-360.

I would watch a CGR After Burner 3 sound test megamix for about three hours before I clicked away.

You should be able to put that CD in any cd player and listen to the music. The game itself is track one I believe.

Hmmm, I enjoyed Afterburner III and the cockpit view helped me get further along in this game than in any other Afterburner. The only problem I have with it is that the machine guns are basically pointless.

Great review Mark; Absolutely spot on. I'd rather play the AfterBurner knock-off on Action 52 (Genesis version) than this. (Not that the knock off was horrible, it was just yawn inducing)

It's a shame this game isn't better, considering how cool the scaling & rotation games on other SEGA CD games are - like on Batman Returns, for instance.

After Burner 32x or even better on the sega saturn is the way to go!

@Tricob1974 I had the same reaction also, although I mostly liked the music. I already had After Burner 2 on the Genesis, and after getting a SegaCD I was really eager for this version. Instead I found the old Genesis cart was more fun. Sheesh, what a waste. I was equally disappointed with several SegaCD games actually, until I became disillusioned with Sega and got into PC games. I never bought any later Sega systems, this was the time period when they lost me.

@TheThomasTT So, it wasn't just Air Combat (PS1) that was annoying with its voices! Then again, Air Combat's voice are even MORE annoying! Just a graze from machine gun fire makes the game say "ALERT! BODY DAMAGED!" Five times! At first, I thought your comment was an Air Combat reference (Read the comments before watching the vid!) because it never shuts up with the "Bogey on your tail!" and "BINGO! YAHOO!"

Mark reacted the same as I when I first started up the game. Drop-dead awesome intro, great Level 1 intro, and then the game's brought down by bland desert scenery, and a game engine so stripped down, it fails to immerse the player like AB2 did. I'm one of the few who didn't like the music as well. To me, the tunes sounded like they were remixed for some 1990s TV cop show. :-/

It's basically G-LOC for the SEGA CD. That isn't an After Burner game! It would be better if they just said that. I loved G-LOC. The Genesis game for G-LOC was really good too.

It's crazy how the designers made it look much duller than the previous versions... After Burner 2 looks much nicer.

After Atari (which will never ever happen again), I wish SEGA would just for the love of all that is game holy, return to making game consoles. :(

ab 3 for the Mega CD is mostly criticised for the-allegedly-weak graphics.But ,let me tell you-this game had such an awesome music and dialogs -even with a black screen instead of graphics it would ve been an absolute "must have"!

Imagine playing this with the konami superscope if it could be used for the genesis...

Between this game, night trap, and bram stokers dracula I thought the Sega CD was one of the worst systems ever. Then you see all the special edition genesis games with extra content like earthworm jim and ecco 2 and there's rpg's like Lunar with actual voice acting and Sonic CD (i.e. sonic 4) and and and and....

That's one bitchin' soundtrack.

Mark - rip the sega cd and create a cd ignoring the first track which is game data. Play the cd and enjoy the soundtrack!
