Classic Game Room reviews GRAN TURISMO 4 for PlayStation 2 released in 2004 in Japan and 2005 in North America.
Drive hundreds of cars on dozens of tracks in this epic driving simulator sim. Powerslides, ghost riding the whip and racing are just a few things you can do (I'm kidding about that stupid ghostrider thing).
Drive TVR, Lotus, RUF, Chapperal, Corvette and hundreds... I mean HUNDREDS of exotic cars in this game. What's the car list? Too big to tell. How good are the replays of your races? Awesome. Sure we're missing Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche and Bugatti, but we've got enough to keep us busy.
Polyphony Digital released this game in 2004 and it's still one of the best driving games ever made.

There was no damage allowed because the car makers would not let their cars be in the game if damage was allowed, was some crap about damage would cause negative image and lower sales of the real cars.

It’s been 15 years since this review came out, and everything said in this video still holds true to this day in 2023. Wonderful game with many hours put into the races and collecting all the cars. Nothing but love for this franchise ❤️

I played GT4 from 2005-2009 and then moved over to the Forza, but looking back, GT4 was so far ahead of its time. And now I'm waiting for GT6 to come out with great anticipation. :)

Gran Turismo 3 was my favorite in the series... The racing was spot on gameplay wise where every slight bit of speed mattered. You don't just catch up to someone unrealistically, every corner, every slight bit of speed means something. Best racing game ever!

El Capitan was one of the very best (fictional and real included) tracks of all, missed this track in gt5 + 6, btw Côte d' azure is supposed to be Monte Carlo - Monaco GP track.

Jimmy Burke Gran turismo 3 to me, looks more colorful and more beautiful in graphics, And well gran turismo 4 is like a moody foggy graphic kinda style with less colors.

Man, this game brings back allot of awesome memories. I remember playing this during the summer with a bunch of my friends back in middle/high school. This game has certainly aged well and is still one of my favorite racing games of all time.

Um the online version of gt4 only had 6 players and that was only released in japan, you wouldn't be talking bout gt5 or gt5 prologue because that had 16 players.

Yeah i'm pretty sure, it was a planned feature and got cancelled for the original games. It did however have alot of Local Network options that with a computer app could be played online.

Do you realize that crashing, damaging and repairing cars is a huge part of Motorsport? If you want to make your game the real driving simulator you need real crashes.

***** Well, yes, but people are mental. The game was released in 2004 for PS2. If you wanted the collision model you wouldn't have that much of cars with great physics and those very detailed tracks. GT is for people that like cars and it is what it is. If you want simulator, play something on PC where you get to even check water/oil, brakes, tires temps/pressures and so on.

Krevin Grard Crashes change your driving style completely and force you to be careful when competing with other racers and this makes more a more intense and exciting race overall.

AFloating ShoppingList How can you possibly think this is professional? Go watch a review from GameTrailers, IGN or Gamespot and you can definitely tell the difference. If it was written with a script, then they have no reason to have a 5 second pause in between every sentence and have so much of the video where nothing it going on.

11:00 That Chapperal was actually banned from racing because it had a fan that sucked the air underneath the car creating tremendous downforce and as a result grip. Brabham did something similar in the late seventies with an F1 car and similarly got banned because it annihilated the competition.

This has to be the best game to date. Stunning graphics, a huge variety of cars and tracks. The detail and depth of this game is actually unbelievable. I have been playing this game since launch in 2004. That shows the longevity of this game. You must buy this game.

Great review. I would laugh if our cars blew up due to crashing, but I actually like how the cars don't get damage when you crash - cause I crash often. Too often. I love the wheelchair (forgot what it was called) part of the episode (the music then fit great with it), made me LOL. Thanks for creating this, I'm getting this game for Christmas!

The Chaparral 2J actually had suction fans to increase downforce even in low speeds, not a Jet engine, but i'm actually really excited that you mentioned it Mark, it's my favorite car too!

Anyone figured out the song during the opening parts of the Gran Turismo 4 footage? I have reason to believe the artist is Masahiro Ando (under the name "The Bad" in this game), one of their songs "Green Monster" have a guitar tone that sounds somewhat similar to the song featured here.

i cant believe how beautiful this game looks, coming from ps3 gt5, i was thinking how there should be big the difference, but there isnt. i would also imagine this game would not have the atrocious load times of GT5. i missed the ps2 era, and i find it sad how a lot of the franchises from ps1 improved on the ps2, but messed it up so bad on the ps3, or changed completely and lost the good and fun things about em, like SSX, twisted metal, final fantasy, etc.

The attention to detail in this game is spot on. Best game series on playstation. I bought a PS3 just to play GT5. GT4 is one of the best games for PS2. The NTSC version is one of the few games for ps2 to have 1080i HD output.

@Knudthebrute Gran Tourismo 4 was in fact one of the few games one PS2 that offered full HD support (1080i) You could enalbe 16:9 mode and progressive scan on the PS2 which the HDTV will recognize as 480P in most cases. And use component cables :)

You may think I'm crazy, but the graphic of the game still kicks ass. I also think it looks more realistic then the majority of racing games today. I remember seeing GT 3 back in 2001 and realized that my mouth was wide open, because I couldn't belive what I have seen. Revolutionary in points of graphic, still today:)

One of the reasons they didn't do damage modeling is because the manufacturers used to be very wary about the idea of having their vehicles banged up. That, and Polyphony saw it as kind of superfluous. "Oh maybe we'll add damage next time."

Yes it is a licensing issue the manufacturers didn't like people crashing there cars. In GT 4 but in GT 6 you can crash and you have minimal damage. P.S. you drive better than me.

I cant still believe someone did actually a lap time on the Nurburgring with that 3 wheel Mercedes, took over 42 hours to do it, but he really did it. Graphically GT4 still looks fantastic, and unlike in Forza serie, cars really looks like these blend in with the backrounds, totally.
