Watch in High Definition. Classic Game Room HD reviews the Atari 2600 Keyboard Controller for the Atari VCS video computer system! Atari 2600 was so fantastic for it's day, and still is even now. The fact that we had these kinds of peripherals out on such an ancient games console is incredible. I have a boxed Atari 2600 with these keyboards, paddles, controllers and even the touch pad with inlays that was used with Star Raiders and a few games that are still sealed in the shrink wrap, among other games and stuff. I love the old consoles as much as I love my Xbox One and Playstation 4 etc.

I actually was given these controllers as a gift to use with "Synthcart" on Atari 2600 by Paul Slocum. Synthcart allows you to utilize the Atari sound chip to make your own music, controlling the Atari sounds with these 'keyboard controllers' really is a lot of fun. Thanks for posting Mark, and yes, the Romans would be proud of this engineering.

@mstrsmth Certain carts like Basic Programming came with overlays that fit onto the keypad controllers. One button would act as a color coded "shift" key with a different function each time you pressed it. With that you could select alphabet, numeric, special characters ect. I remember keying in Pong which worked quite well! There was also another single keypad used for Star Raiders, looked way different, used a different style overlay but internally it still functioned the same.

haha great video. I can just imagine a bridge of Atari 2600 keyboard controllers now. I never had these controllers before, but I do remember seeing Basic Programming advertised in one of those Atari 2600 catalogs.

That keypad could be neat for a Roguelike! Hard to store a full, procedurally-generated dungeon in 128 bytes of RAM, though.

Well I'll correct myself. It's in the Atari Jaguar Kasumi Ninja review and it was actually a blender. I haven't seen that review in like a year, and it was really funny. I knew it was some basic household appliance anyway.

I had a Cookie Monster game with a similar controller, you could change the front of the controller so it had directions etc instead of numbers

That woulda been cool, but I didn't know of those guys all the way back then. I was introduced to them a couple years ago by SashaNein and became a big fan of them over time. That video is on here where he says he sold his Jaguar for a toaster, I'm sure it is in one of the Jaguar game reviews here.

This is a really, really good review. I have a strange attachment for Atari, as it was my first game system (as late as 1998). If you do any more reviews based on Atari, I would like to see the Starpath Supercharger. I found it interesting, while searching for Atari supplies online that "Stella" happens to be the name of a widely-known 2600 emulator, as well as the code name for the Atari 3200. Whether this is a coincidence, I may never know. Oh, and 200th comment. Congratulations!

no. it doesn't say "telegames" and i dont think Sears even had the Jr. model licensed to them, just the original woodgrain model (though i dont remember if it had 4 or 6 switches).

ummm, when i got my atari 5200 they gave me some random 2600 stuff, such as paddles, they also gave me something for the 2600 that is the "atari video touch pad" that has the same amount of buttons, and space for inserts...
