Classic Game Room HD reviews DRAGSTER from 1980 for the Atari 2600. This auto racing game puts you in the cockpit of a Drag Racing car! Sort of... you push the button for gas, hold left to use to the clutch and push right to shift. Your objective is to earn the fastest time without blowing your engine up. As far as racing games on Atari 2600 go, Dragster is pretty dull. Enduro from Activision is a better bet for fans of racing games on the old school Atari VCS video computer system. This CGRHD review of Dragster has gameplay from the Atari 2600 version of this classic retro game cartridge.

This was one of a handful of 2600 games I had as a kid.. and I thought it sucked back then and I still think it sucks today.

@@davidfrederick6003 you're supposed to read the manual. David Crane writes, ""There are a couple of tricks that are not so obvious. For example, put the clutch in during the last numbers of the countdown, hold it in, rev up (careful) and pop the clutch by letting go of the Joystick the instant the screen reads 0."

The only thing this game will be remembered for is how Todd Rogers lied about getting the best time for it which led to the late, great Apollo Legend exposing him.

I found this game rather addictive actually. Very limited by design, but well worth the couple of cubic inches of space it takes up in a game collection.

i smoked the devils lettuce and put many many many hours into this game. It was a great game when it came out. We didn't have the choice that exists now.

I was addicted to and obsessed with this game back in the early 1980's. There was something about the droning engine sounds which took my obsession to a whole other level. I was the DRAGSTER!

If you're a big drag-racing fan, this game is a fun challenge. The box with it states "If you can get it to run under 6-sec, take a picture & send it to us. The world-record is 5.61...." Trick: Hold the controller sideways, and do it in the non-steering mode. That way you're just knocking the stick back-&-forth... Far-easier to succeed that way. Also, carefully mark on the screen where the high-point of the red-line is... This and "popping the clutch" in top-gear (Wheelie) will help immensely.

As very few have mentioned, this game can be a ton of fun with 2 players. This was one of the only games I could play with my dad way back in the day who hated vids. Good times.

I was the king of dragster. You had to really pay attention to your engine rev and lightning fast shifting in order to achieve the best time possible and not blow the shift.

You had to be a car guy at the core to "Get" this one. It was about reaction times. And it was a darn good game in that respect. Besides, it's easy to bag on something in hind-sight. Crane prob spent 20, maybe 30 minutes writing this! :-)

I have this game on an Android emulator box and a couple DIY arcade joysticks. This game is a blast when you've got a few buddies over, playing for a buck or a beer.

Dragster is a great game. *Very* short, but great gameplay. It's notably unique.. I can't really think of another game that demand that much timing skill. A large key is that it's a two player game. Most head to head competition games seem much worse when played solo. The graphics are better than most other games of that time... Activision's 2600 games always were. If it allowed us to upgrade tje acceleration and tires and tweak the gearbox, it could increase it's replayability tenfold.

once you get the timing to this down, this game is SO addictive. I fucking HATED it at first, but you CAN get the hang of it, and I am a mediocre gamer at best. This game kicks so much ass

@sonick808 Here here! Graphics-wise this game was a dud, but it was all about mastering the joystick. You'd literally have to "smack" the joystick on the side to shift and stuff, while at the same time hitting the red button for the throttle. Once you mastered the shifting and red-lining effect (careful not to blow the engine!), you could acquire some serious "drag" times. I think my best wast in the 3-somethings.

Your review.... was... well .. not what i had hoped the game was amazing for the simplicity of it I still play this today trying and trying to get faster and faster times i'm at 6.17 me and my dad spent hours playing this game and it's still one of my fav games.I really thought it was a good game and still do

hear hear. I'm not sure about test drive since I haven't played it (but probably will now on your recommendation vs. this). As far as Atari Dragster, it is a damn blast. I can keep the pedal mashed and in the powerband just a touch below blowing the engine and turn some serious times. I sent in a sub-6 second pic to activison long ago but i don't think i ever got my patch

You have the Atari Bowling from 1979 to thank for the improved graphics. Bowling was the first console game to include round pixel designs instead of squared angles. Being able to add round shapes took gaming to the next level for Atari aswell as Activition.

LOL! i like the new ending for this one. Sometimes i wonder why you take vids down then put up another version but then i watch the new one and there's always a little something different about it. Can't wait for the next show, as usual. I really look forward to watching these everyday. yeah i know...i'm a nerd. i know what your saying. the way i look at it, mark looks for the positive things in games rather than the negative. thats what i love about the classic game room. although, i do enjoy the avgn as well.

Ok sure, the entire game play lasts, if your good, less than 6.00 seconds, but you're missing the picture here. This game is 31 years old, was the first game released by activision, and contains less than 2k of code. activision was started by 4 guys, who wanted nothing more than to knock atari off it's perch. this was ONE of the games that did it.

OK, so the effects sucked ass, but it wasn't about that...it was about timing and how precise you could shift before blowing your engine. I remember the game had some kind of contest or something where they'd "Reward" you if you got high score. Well, I was one of those who apparently got one of the highest scores (i.e. lowest times) ever in the game.

As god awful as the game seems to be, the drawing of the car is surprisingly detailed for a 2600 game. That being said, you still couldn't pay me to play this game.

I like this review a lot. Mainly because Mark's sleepy voice is perfect at expressing how boring this game is. I love it when he reviews lousy games, and this one barely even qualifies as a game in the first place.

You know, I saw this game at a thrift store for about a buck the other day. Having sampled the game on the Activision Anthology set prior, I felt that buck was best spent elsewhere. I couldn't imagine how people could have spent 20-30 bucks on a game that lasted ten seconds or less per play. If you had fun with it, great... but the game did very little for me. It's just awful. You COULD argue that this is best played with 2-players, but then again, so is Combat... a much better game.

Looking at this video, there is no doubt this game is lame! But back in the day, I played it a lot. It required a good sense of timing, and there was something addictive "just one more time" about it. Kinda like gambling (playing the slots).

Oh, dude! Tons of years ago, a good friend insisted on playing this game to death. (Long before he ever got the chance to thoroughly gut Gran Turismo.) it's not so bad as a vs. game. Good points. It's a ten second game! Pretty darn easy. Cheap. Want worse? 2600 Boxing. Want more? PSx has a drag racing game. I agree! Review the awesome Megamania! It's Star Trek meets Space Invaders...from the insane asylum. Oh...and Jr. 2600 is rare. Never seen one IRL, personally.

What? This game is fantastic. You need skill to get it to work and top your score. Just a little too much gas and it's over. I thought it was very exciting and challenging everytime you play it.

You mean Ridge Racer 6, because Ridge Racer 7 is an updated version of Ridge Racer 6 on the 360, sporting a higher resolution. Ah... you are just a 360 fanboy discriminating the PS3, which is pathetic lol At least the PS3 remains working after 6 months with no featured flaws..... ya.. featured flaws.... the RRoD if a feature in the 360, how nice.

dont dis the atari, if it wasnt for this console you wouldnt have all the gaming markets/games you have today. This game back in the day wasnt that bad, maybe if he was actually racing a friend or something it would be more fun. Everyone today is focused more on graphics. Atari, NES, SEGA, had some games that will still blow the socks off some of todays games.

@AgaMbadi Wow, tuff luck. I can only imagine like....the anticipation you went thru, saving, waiting, then that final day!.....pop it in to play & then...WTF? I just tried this game on my Stella Emulator (I think I also had the cart, back when) This game is frustrating. But, just because it is tricky/hard, doesn't make it fun once you "get the hang of it". It's STILL boring afterward.

Guessing the reviewer wasn't around back in the days when it was actually released. We couldn't just rage quit after a few minutes because it was going to be quite some time before we could afford to get our next one so stuck with it and figured out how to play. Yeah, might still come to conclusion that a game might indeed suck and we that wasted our hard earned dough, but this one certainly did not if you put in the time.
