Nothing like playing Metroid on an NES hooked up to a CRT, drinking beer and blasting Soundgarden in the summer heat.

Metroid was an instant classic. It came out when I was 8 & many late nights were spent on the couch with it. Kid Icarus is my all time NES fave,but it's HARD!

@@mrg5559 Can't believe I'm responding to a response from 6 years ago, but here you go... In Greek mythology, Icarus (/ˈɪkərəs/; Ancient Greek: Ἴκαρος, romanized: Íkaros, pronounced [ǐːkaros]) was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. (I knew this, but copy and paste was easier). Don't really know the story behind Metroid.

I got the Nintendo Player's Guide (the big black book of NES games) in 87. at the time that was the only map of Metriod I knew of. unless you count the hand drawn maps me and my friends tried to make. Ahh the pre-internet years, that was like the strong age.

This game came out 2 years before I was born. The first game like this I played and beaten was Blaster Master around 4 or 5 years old. I never had Metroid on the NES but my story is when I was probably around 6, my cousin had bought Super Metroid on the SNES. I watched him complete the entire game...then I ran through the game right after he did. I didn't miss anything he missed. Since then I have to beat it once a year, and I still cant 100% complete the game.

Not sure if this has been said yet, but the original 1987 "Official Nintendo Players Guide" contained maps for Metroid, though can't recall if it featured item locations or not. Also, like you, I had a 7800 during the NES days, though I didn't get an NES until 2000. Still, that world shattering feeling we had when going from playing Food Fight or Asteroids, then to a friends place to play Super Mario... not even in the same league... By the time Mario 3 and Link's Adventure came around, even Ballblazer looked pathetic.

Watching this review, and I'm suddenly a 15 year old kid with so much spare time playing the hell out of this game. :( I got chills when the different scenes were shown. I haven't even thought to play it in 25 years, and I didn't even recognize a couple of the areas. The elevator trip down scene for some reason jogged a really weird sense of nostalgia. I reeaallllly loved this game. Just an absolute masterpiece.

My memories are very similar to yours on Metroid. Except, a friend brought it over and I hated it at first. "Where do I go? What do I do? Where's my points? Why would I want to "build up" my character?" I hated the game...until I borrowed it for the weekend. Now it's one of my favorite games of all time. It's so much more than just another shooter. Great review!

"How did we find it back in the day?" Because unlike today's brats we would go out and explore the games. We wouldn't let a giant arrow tell us where to go. I had Metroid on the gameboy (i didn't had a nes :( ). I was a 9 or 10 years old i think when it was released. With my tiny young brain i could figure out that if i was a ball i could fit into hole. I also knew that as a ball you could drop explosives. That in their turn could blow parts of the level up, making new ways. I just tried things. If i saw a hole somewhere i would try to go in, drop explosives and see if a new path would open up to me. I didn't need a ingame guide telling me where to go, i would figure it out some how. And if not me then a friend probably would or my brother would find something out. We didn't had internet in those days (yeah it didn't exist yet). I had a club nintendo subscription but never got the magazine with the walktrough in it so it was all up to me to discover it. Offcourse i didn't play the game every day as i was stuck very often and that would get annoying at times. Yet it never stopped me from returning and trying another approach or have a friend try something who might have had another vision on it. And this was what gaming was about, your skills, your brain. Games weren't there to hold your hand and tell you what to do. They where there for you to play them (sorry but most games of today pretty much play themselves). It was up to you to figure out how to get to the next level, or in this case get anywhere and find items you needed to progress. I still wonder how it happened that the gamer of today became such a brainless turd that needs their hands hold all the way and still brag about their skills. What skills do you have as a gamer when you can't even play a game that a kid played who couldn't even speak or read English back then? Who had no idea what he got into with the game but still got far. Simply by trying. But god forbid you have to figure things out yourself these day's. God forbid you are stuck for longer then 5 minutes cause that is annoying, and annoying means bad these days. How can you as gamer grow in skills when your skills aren't tested? How can you become better at games when the games make it so easy for you? I miss the time that games where a challange. Did i get to finish the games? No, not often no. I didn't care, the reward wasn't in seeing the end credits. The reward was in getting passed that part you got stuck at. Progressing each time you played. That you remembered where things where. That you memorized the dangers and how to deal with them. People of today have such a weird look at games. Even developers seem to have forgotten what games where about. It was not the end, it was the freaking journey. How can i feel satisfied as gamer today that i finished a game, when the game is really short and easy to play? Games in the past where not even that much longer, but they where more challenging and there for took much longer to complete. I don't ask of every game to be hard, we had plenty of easy games as well in those days, but exploration hardly seems to be a thing anymore, and often the game press go all whiny when a game challenges you "its to hard and frustrating, they should have included a map, they should tell you where to go" grab a paper and pencil you spoiled brat and do what games used to do, trigger your brain!
@Slayermetallica69
@Slayermetallica69 10 лет назад
I agree, I always thought there was something missing with newer games, but I just could never put my finger on it. You should play Dark Souls/Demon's souls though, those games are pretty challenging.
@Jorendo
@Jorendo 10 лет назад
Slayermetallica69 I know and i have played them. But they are rare these day's and far in between. I mean isn't it rather sad that they have to advertise its hard and that being their unique selling point? Shouldn't that be normal for plenty of games? I don't mind if you make a game easy with all kind of assists when someone selects easy mode. But when a game offers a hard mode then i see no point why the games are often still easy. Or you get that lame "We gonna trow so much shit at you that it will be hard" cause the old games where not about that. Yet for some reason they often think hard means exactly that. Just like risk vs reward has faded. Look at CoD, you get hit, you go into cover and you recharge after a few seconds tadaa. Where is the risk in that? In Half Life i often where praying that there would be no enemies between me and the medstation. And they always where so i had to be creative if i only had 5% health left. It made the game more tense, it made it more satisfying to beat a level knowing you where almost dead. It made you feel vunerable and having a huge "oh crap" moment. Now you just go into cover and tadaa you are healed again. And to make it "hard" they make your screen go red that is more annoying then hard.
@Jorendo
@Jorendo 10 лет назад
***** If you are not one of them, then you won't have to feel insulted. And today's gamers are also older people who only got into gaming cause it was the hip thing to do. People told me 10 years ago i was a nerd and that gaming was for pathetic losers. Now they are the same people who call you a noob cause you don't play Call of Duty. And sorry, but there is no denying that the modern gamer has become rather sloppy and lazy. Doesn't mean all of them are, but look at what the major group of gamers are. Mainstream gamers, people who want a game to be short and not to hard so they can finish it and see the end (that's what publisher say that their fans want). If you do not belong to that group and are young then that's great. You gain skills by doing things, explore what the game has to offer and don't give up when stuck for longer then 5 minutes.
@Jorendo
@Jorendo 10 лет назад
***** That is fine and they should. But that doesn't mean all games should be made for those people. That shouldn't mean that great games suddenly are made for people who don't have much time. Gaming was for gamers, not it is mostly for wanna be gamers. There simply is no excuse for the fact that games been so dumbed down just to please people who don't want to invest time in gaming. So you can't play many hours every day...neither can i but that won't stop me from playing RPG's. Yeah sure it takes long but so what? Should i finish it in 3 evenings cause the games only last 4 - 6 hours these day's? Nothing wrong with that, but everything is wrong with "oh lets make games simple so those who don't have the time for games can play our games and hey screw over those who want a challange".
@Turshin
@Turshin 10 лет назад
You want a long game that challenges you play any of the Gran Turismos. And get a gold on every liscense test. ( without the game shark of course) the game pretty much taught me how to drive. It also tested me on my physics skills and showed me somewhat how to set up a suspension. The new one will envelope your entire life. Each day I'm unofficially becoming an engineer. And as far as exploration goes have you ever heard of the Grand theft Auto series. Another good game that challenges you in your creativity that is is Marvel vs capcom 1 and 2. Part 3 is for pussies that used to get their ass kicked in part 1 and 2. Some of the characters in mvc1/2 were just cheap to no end cough cable sentinel blackheart. Fighting against the game itself was easy the hard part was when you went to the arcade and played a person that worked on a particular character or team for years and have to find a way around their attacks or defense. But NES games were unbelievably hard though. I remember the first time I played ninja Gaiden and got to the part with those FUCKING BIRDS. AAAAHHHGGG!!!! Annoying wasn't the work for that shit. But somehow I soldiered on and got by them. The games that you're talkin about do well for a short time but that's it. Really good games challenge you and have unmeasurable replay value.

I played Metroid 1 for the first time right after finishing Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion, and because my standards for the series was so high at the time, I was greatly disappointed and expected something different. But as the years have passed, I've grown to respect the game for what it was and frankly I'm jealous that I couldn't have enjoyed it when it was brand new like you did, Mark.

Oh, I was so jealous- but I still had over 100 games for the 2600 and half the 7800 library, which kinda made my friends jealous. They'd get a new game MAYBE every three to eight months, I'd get ten new ones just from my paper route money alone (not to mention when my parents would get me more). The only thing about the game that made it challenge bing for me was not having a map. Not even one that showed where you are and where you have been. I went in so many circles haha Great game

the influence this game has is obvious, I don't know if I would playing this game now because it's sequels have surpassed it in every way, but I will say the first metroid has one of the best atmosphere's for a game ever made you really feel like your all alone isolated from the the rest of the universe.

played it on switch online.. spent a few hours on it.. hate it beyond all imaginable ratings I could give it. On the other hand I love super metroid on SNES. Love.

Well, if it hasn't been mentioned before: JUSTIN BAILEY But man, this was a tough game back then. I usually got tired of wandering around at some point.
