Classic Game Room reviews RAYSTORM for PS1 by Taito, Working Designs and Spaz, released in 1996. Blow up enemies with front mounted lasers or lock-on home lasers in this stylish vertical scrolling shooter for the PS1, the 2nd in the "Ray" trilogy of shoot 'em ups from Taito.

I played this on arcade during off post leave in the army. I loved it so much. I had no idea this was on PSX!

I had the demo of this and played it over and over and over. I wanted the game so bad when I was a kid but living in a rural area i never had the chance to purchase it as games were rare.

RayStorm kicks my butt, but I still enjoy it a lot. Taito's STGs (Darius series, Ray series) are a lot of fun to play, and adjustable difficulty makes the games accessible for just about everyone. While I have some experience with this SPAZ/Working Designs release, I play it now via Taito Legends 2 on the PlayStation 2-- which is a really nice compilation with RayStorm AND G-Darius available for play.

I have Raystorm in the old school PS1 box. Awesome game. Although Einhander and R-Type Delta are also some of my favorite shooters on the PS1.

Great game, the PS1 is a very under rated when it comes to its SHMUPS. It really has a lot of great ones. Only system that can compete is the Genesis. Subbed!

I miss this game! Just had to watch a review for the nostalgia. Its so much fun. I wish they would do a re-release on ps4. I thought about it because i got the itch for playing a shootem up. I cant find a newer game to rival this. I bought raiden V but it isnt this by far.

I think it's that the music and graphics are slightly better in the first one, but RayStorm is quite good too. I love these games!

You can also find Raystorm on Taito Legends 2 for the PS2 (along with Darius Gaiden). I have the PS1 version as well, so even though I usually play my PS1 games on an actual PS1, I'll try it on my PS3 since it is hooked up via the HDMI cable.

I shall await the Ray Tracers review. I recall that when I saw the game on RU-vid, I immediately wanted it and bought it only to be dissapointed because the US version does not have the voice acting during gameplay. which is the only reason why I wanted the game. Still fun though.

Shadowman and Mortal Kombat II (for Amiga) was made by Acclaim. I never had problems with games by them. Why the dislike?

I suck at games like this. My attention span can't handle it. The screen just looks like noise to me and I keep getting hit while I don't even know where I am.

Looks like a great game and follow on to Galactic Attack (a game I originally purchased thanks to your advice Mark!). GA is probably better just because it has aged better, visually. Sprites hold up way better than early polygons.

But but... Ps2 had the worse Graphics of the 6th Generation even Dreamcast looked better... and the HD output of the Ps2 kind of didnt worked :/ and than it had an not so "perfect" controller. . . well at least it has about 3000 Exclusivs :D And it was a cheap DvD player thats why it sold so much.

There is also a PC version that has an "extra mode", that is basicly the arcade version with better graphics.

I swear the game design looks EXACTLY like Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth's(N64) except for the jagged Playstation polygons. That was developed by Hudson Soft though so apparently Taito was ripped off. I mean this literally looks like the exact same game almost....

amazes me how well some ps1 games still hold up graphically and how utterly horrible others do.. for example- Castlevania SOTN still looks amazing to this day while others look so shitty nowadays that most snes and Genesis games even outshine them, funny how that works..

When he jokingly put this game in the snes, it reminds me of the broken deal between sony & nintendo about a snes cd-rom addon, DAMM it makes me wish that nintenfo just continued their cd-rom addon,but too bad they were just too coriouse & heady to continue with it, sadly it only reached a prototype. Either way,I think the saturn version of this game is better haha.

For anyone interesting, I'm fairly certain the Japanese version of this game is super cheap. It may be cheaper to actually buy a Japanese PS1 and a copy of Raystorm than it is to buy a U.S copy of this game.

Toonses Its actually 640 × 480 oh... someone allready said. I like the Charme of the Ps1 graphics... i just love early 3D Games especial on Ps1... the rest of the playstations i dont really like :D
