The boot-up sequence for the Playstation 1 (PSOne) will always give me chills I think. :)

Back in the days you put a game in and it just played. Now its updates, installs, asking for a prenuptial agreement...

anyone else get chills when listening to the sound the ps1 makes when it turns on?

Some think the PS1 era of games haven't aged well, but I think many of them hold up just fine. I personally like the low poly/sprite-and-poly aesthetics. Much of that is nostalgia, but limitations bred creativity and the PS1/PS2 era had so many creative games that are still being mimicked to this day.

Ps1 had some great 2-d games: Megaman, Castlevaina, Marvel Vs Capcom, Street Fighter Alpha, Rayman, and much more. I loved the console, it was the console that blew my mind growing up.

The demo disc had Spider-man 2: Enter Electro. That's a good game

My first console ever. I was so happy when i got it back in 2002. His design still looks pretty cool today.

I still have my ps2 slim. Backward compatibility is an amazing thing!

Barbie Explorer looks like Crash Bandicoot. I might actually wanna play that.

This was my first Sony console. I remember getting it as part of a bundle--it came with Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Tekken 3. A year later, I would trade the PSOne in to get a discount off a PS2.

they should really “remake” CRT TV’s for retro gamers... consoles like the playstation 1 really look way better on CRT than on modern HD TV’s... I’m sure thousands of people would buy one... like a 50” CRT TV

The smaller, redesigned version of the PS1 may not have a reset button, but it looks awesome because it has a 5-Inch LCD screen that goes with it and an AC power adapter (There is also a car adapter for this console as well), therefore making the Sony PS one a portable video game console/CD player that you can take with you on the go.

Barbie Explorer is actually a really great game. I have it on the P.C. My sister and I used to play it all the time. It brings back so many memories.

PS One - relesed 14 years before Xbox One, and still has a lot more, far better games than Xbox one will ever have.

After the Mega Drive, the Playstation one is my favorite console. My father paid for my Atati 2600 and my MegaDrive back on the day, but the PS1 was the first console I actually bought with my money...pretty exciting! Thanks for the review Mark! I still have this since 2001. A Decade later, I bought the original model because I missed the original model so much.

The slim was my first game system when I was like 4yrs old. One day after school I came home to a garage sale and my mom had given it away. I never forgave her for giving away my childhood.

Born in 93 and sega genesis was my first console :) Wasn't till 98 we got the playstation.

I own Barbie Explorer, it's my collection masterpiece. It's also translated in Italian, even the dialogues!

I just picked up 2 of these yesterday.. i never got to own this model before and gave my fat one away.. but my childhood lives on this system..

My grandparents bought one of these for me and my brother when it was still rather new, and I still have it and the games that they had us pick out when they bought it. It still works.

standing up and slapping in a disc into a console has always been a more soulful experience than booting up an emulator and selecting an iso file.

I have the PSone. I didn't ask for a Playstation until around 2000 or 2001 so "Santa" got me this one. Good times.

Ohhh my childhood just came back to me...

I just bought my PSone slim two weeks ago and it's awesome having a PS1 again it fits my set up really nice being so small it doesn't take up alot of space and it just look freaking cool I love it.

So many great memories. I still have my PS1 and it works great.

When I was a kid my brother had a PS one with this exact demo disk. I played those demos over and over doing everything I could possibly do.

That ps1 intro gave me a flashback of so many good memories

I remember burning out two PS One consoles before returning to my original Playstation that I had shelved for them. Still working and eventually sold it to my neighbor in 2005. The PS Ones I owned seemed to heat up really quick and eventually just stopped working after a few months.

The way Mark pronounced "PSone" kinda sounds like "Persona", heh.

PS One is still better than the Xbox One

This was such a big console back in the late 90s and early 2000s I played alot of tomb raider, Driver 2, Star wars phantom menace, medal of honor, Tweisted metal, ape escape, etc. Such good memorys with this systems c:

Recommend getting a PS2 Slim console. Plays PS1 games as well as DVDs! Finding the 8-inch LCD snap-on screens for the PS2 Slim is becoming more problematic, but mine has worked great and I use this as a mobile console for places with power outlets. When I was snowed-in at work, this PS2 with a small collection of favorite games (SOCOM 1-3, Virtua Fighter 4, Ace Combat 4, 5 & Zero, Onimusha, Black, Mr. Mosquito, Mercenaries 1, Ghost in the Shell SAC, etc.) was a GODSEND!

I wish he'd have mentioned the fact that the PSone doesn't have the cool serial port in the back that the original model does, but other than that, another solid review.

I remember buying the PSone at Walmart brand new. Mine had the detachable mini screen which is a must if you plan to take it with you on vacations. The little plastic nob inside the drive that holds the disk in place started to fall apart on me but I was able to fix it with super glue.

I find it funny that you reviewed this a coupla days after I got one of these at a resale.

I had this in 2000 still got it it costs 500 pound if you sell it on the market still going strong

I got the smallest video game console I got A Sony PSONE slim with LCD screen attached to it The smaller Sony PlayStation & in early 2000 they Make redesign version of PlayStation known as the PSONE for sure & How Awsome this thing & Play it in car With car adapter

oh my god omega boost, that game was so EPIC! it looked and played amazing, and still does to me, I wish I had my psone back with all of those delicious games

I wanted to play games from my childhood, but i dont want a big console on my desk, so i bought the psone one and a av-signal converter so i can play it on my lcd or beamer in 16:9 i also connected the audio output to my suround system, which makes that boot up sequence sound so much more epic.

I had one of these. They're great. It was the only one I used in the living room because it was so small it wouldn't disturb anything when I hooked it up. I put it in a drawer under the TV and just took it out when I wanted to use it. I think it was only two cables. Three if you count the controller. It would just stay out of the way because it took up almost no room. If you're looking for a PS1 you really should just get one of these. They're pretty cheap and I don't think they overheat like the older models. I've also been told load times are faster but I don't know for sure. They seem to be on Twisted Metal at least. Most games are dirt cheap nowadays too.

Fun fact: the PSone power supply also works on a JVC X'Eye. It's true!

Barbie Explorer: Probably the only game on the PSone beside Crash Bandicoot that couldn't be easily replaced by a modern PS3 or PS4 game.

should have also mentioned the reason to have a psone nowadays is for that legendary startup sound.

Super Nintendo used to be my favorite system ever then I bought one of these with a screen and it's now my favorite! I just wish I could find an old CRT to connect it to.

I remember when I got one of these new, it was the one that included that now very valuable portable screen. I used this thing a ton, good times. I always still preferred the first rectangular version of the PlayStation though.

A PSone review, this is my golden opportunity to enlist the classic game room community to help me out. Can any one remember the name of a ps1 game where a little bunny rabbit type character would walk around the level and you had to shoot the enemies before they hurt him, sort of like TimeCrisis without the pedal. It also had co-op and boss battles and if you shoot him in the bum he jumps and if you shoot in the head he falls over. Please help as this was one of my favorite games as a kid but i cant find it anywhere or remember the name of it.

I still have the original fat version of this with memory card and controllers, but I rarely even use it anymore. Although on a side note that boot up is so classic!

I got this with a tiny screen you can hook up on the back and came with a cig power cord.
