Classic Game Room reviews T&C SURF DESIGNS: Wood and Water Rage for the NES by LJN, released in 1987! Relive the late '80s surfing and skating craze by riding some gnarly waves and "gleaming the cube" with your rad skatboard bro! Tubular!! T&C Surf Designs packs lackluster surfing and skating into a single forgettable, yet amazingly memorable game that Mark grew up with. Wait, what? There's a cat surfing in a tuxedo?? I don't remember that. Town and Country Surf Designs is what the '80s were all about bro'!

I remember when I was little my dad came home from work one day and told me to check inside his lunch box, and there was this game. It was a major surprise and I was super excited. He and my mom and I played it after dinner, and we had a good time. It's a fond memory. I didn't remember it was made by LJN. I knew LJN games were bad, even back then, but for some reason people around me liked those games at the time. A neighbor kid loved this game and would ask to play it long after I fell out of love with it. I also had Jaws, and another friend couldn't get enough of that game. No one wanted to play Bubble Bobble with me, except for my dad. Go figure.

Used to play the Skateboarding segments all the time with my friends back in the day. It was just a lot of fun.

3:43 The half pipe mini game that I believe you're refering to here is the 'select button' option at the title screen of "Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble" on the NES. Pressing 'Start' will just take you into the adventure/main game. Also a super nostalgic one for me. It also imo has one of the most epic title screen themes in Nintendo history. But if I hadda pick my g.o.a.t. NES game track, hands down, it's *Rygar* - *_Caverns of Sigilla_*

A fond memory I had way back when was laughing so hard when the monkey surfer would fall off the surf board. I was really young back then so that was the funniest thing to me. I remember playing the other levels and playing Punch Out as well.

I remember back in the day I bought Xenophobe for the NES, thought it sucked, returned it and got T&C. In those days, you were allowed to return games for different ones. And I played T&C and discovered that it sucked too. So I returned that and got the NES version of Joust, and that, of course, was awesome. Moral of the story? When in doubt, go with Joust.

I still think this game is totally tubular, and T&C was a big name, among the skate rats around Montoursville (PA), back when I graduated, in 1990. Loved the "dreams of going out west to Erie, in Ohio." The game where you do flips off the wave crest is Epyx's Summer Games, for (and came with) the Atari Lynx, which was incredible.

Artwork that looks like a trapper keeper. You're right. It does look like that. I loved my trapper keeper and slap bracelets. I sucked at the surfing 🏄. I did enjoy the skateboarding though.

I used to like it too. It's one of those games that if you were able to get your parents to buy it, you were stuck with it and had to will yourself to like it. I still think an updated version would be cool.

for some reason I got pretty good at this game.I think you forgot the rail slide trick...that does make it a little more fun.I really had fun playing this as a kid and I really liked the surfing bit...once you got the feel for the control you could always win. :)

This game was crazy popular back in the day and I never knew why. I've always hated this game. It was a different time back then as we didn't have the plethora of reviews available to us. We had the screenshots on the back of the box, that was it. Those screen shots are responsible for alot of bad games being sold.

Holy crap. Oh the fond memories i have of playing this game. Well maybe "fond" isnt the right word to use.I agree with mark. I thought this game was good back when I was a child. Totally forgot about this and my struggles i had of trying to get past the Second level!!! Matter of fact I don't think I ever made it past the surfing level. Man I sucked at this game.

So many memories in the span of 5 minutes, Mark. Ocean Pacific. Jams. Nia Peeples. Magnum P.I. Games that were better when we were kids then they are now, like this disasterbacle. This game. It's no California Games. Or Skate or Die. It's... it's heinous. Non-triumphant. Yuck.

I was a child of the 80s that loved the surf skate culture I had a pink skateboard cause it was ok for a boy to have a neon pink board in the 80s but even as a kid I knew this was crap i much preferred California games and Skate or Die!

The skateboarding part isn't that bad actually. I never could really get the surfing portion. I sometimes play this one, I have it in my collection. It's better than most that LJN has to offer although that doesn't say a whole lot.

Mark, how come during skating you didn't go off any jumps or rail slide?? You made the gameplay look overly simplistic. I too owned this back in the late 80's and loved it. I think you forgot how to properly rack up points in skating!

I think its more the atmosphere of the game that brings back good memories such as the sea, music, and its hip style. This game was kinda good. Like if you'd never played it before you'd get a few hours of enjoyment out of it. After that though, it quickly gets redundant. The level design is too hard. I don't think I ever got past level 2 on the street skating. So I'm stuck listening to the same music, seeing the same street, and cursing at the same obstacle that tripped me up last time. Kinda feels like the racing scene in Battle Toads. An enjoyable scene if you didn't have to play it 1,000 times to beat it. This game feels more like a demo. Not a complete game.

I popped this into my NES a few years back myself. This review was spot on >.< I was crushed and confused as to why I loved this game so. The sound and aesthetics will always bring me a happy feeling but the game does... utterly... suck >.

This was my favorite game as a kid. I always rented it from the video store every week. For some reason, I never saw the sense in buying it, even though I probably spent more renting it weekly.
