the reason older discs read alot better when highly scratched up is because they had a massive empty amount of space on the disc and... only like 1/3 of the game is actually on the disc itself.
I remember this was given away for free back in the day. All you had to do was call sega in a certain amount of time...and... the rest I forgot. The customer service line was a button pushing nightmare. Long story short I never got my copy. I did love the 2nd one much more than the first. It looked amazing back then (1996). If remix is so cheap maybe I'll try to track it down.
Precisely: they were the leaders. Virtua Fighter 2, released in the arcades in November 1994, was the first fighting game with textures. Its competitor, Tekken, came out a month later. Deliberately discarding a feature *they* introduced would have made no sense, and yes, it would've been a suicide. When you're the leader in the market, you absolutely cannot "do whatever the hell you want": if you're not constantly striving to stay ahead of the competition, you won't remain the leader for long.
I don't agree that the first version of Sega Saturn's Virtua Fighter was "godawful." It had the same gameplay as Remix, and gameplay is why I loved the game.
No. Think it's 1994 and Sega has the most advanced arcade fighter. Then Namco releases its own arcade fighter and people start pushing quarters into Tekken machines instead of VF2 machines. So a Sega executive says: "Guys, we gotta make a more complex fighter, but there's one feature that's gotta go. Textures." What do you think happens next? a) the guy is booted out of Sega b) the CEO of Sega says "Thank you! That's the key! Giving up a feature we introduced!" and gives the guy a big fat check
It's not Saturn's disk reading magic, Virtua Fighter disks themselves are infused with Virtua Magic. My VF4 disk was so horribly scratched when I bought it used I was about to return it without even trying it out. So glad I decided to pop it into my PS2, since it worked. VIRTUA MIRACLE!
I'm just replying to this cause i'm bored and hopefully i won't leave an obvious typo. The 18-25 audience would of played these games when they were younger and its nice to see how some people such as myself still enjoy the older titles today. Why review the PS3/XBOX 360 games when thousands of other sites already do that? Mark is showing theres more out there than the crap we sadly have today.
I actually thought the original Virtua Fighter on the Saturn was pretty good myself, seems Mark doesn't agree :) :) Virtua Fighter 2 is the business though - if you own a Saturn, you simply HAVE to get a copy of VF2
@emeryDH that is an opinion i can agree with, im not trying to make old games look bad, but its just not fair to say that the older games are too good to compare with the new ones. hey i too have an dreamcast (it counts to the old generation for me), snes, sega master system and some other old consoles.
I find this " Virtua" thing sound pretty cool, it's like "Super" Nintendo used to have, it's too bad SEGA didn't really used it more, how would have been if there was "Virtua Sonic" or "Virtua SEGA"!
Well, the first time I've seen this game, it was playable at the shopping mall... I can't remember if I did like it or not, but I did wanted a Sega Saturn back then... got a N64 console instead.
I think that the developers were Dragonball fans, also considering how Jacky has spiky blond hair like Goku in super saiyan form. Jacky also wears slippers in the first episode (like Goku in Dragonball) and boots in the second (like Goku in DBZ).
@Danny77uk He records the videogame footage separately from his commentary. I'm sure there are more than a couple of edits in there that are transparent to you.
I used to have a demo of this on the PC. It's pretty much similar to this version, including an option to have the classic models from the first arcade, or in your case 32x version.
Dead or Alive 1 was trying SO hard to be just like this game... and succeeded. (DoA1 is awesome, go play it now) If it comes to a crunch, get VF2 and DOA; There's no point to owning VF1/VFR when you have VF2.
Now you can wish that because we have other fighter games that don't have the blocky look. But back then, not evolving would have been a suicide. What I *do* wish is that Virtua Fighter 6 came out, and it was stereoscopic.
To anyone who doesn’t know my arcade and home console knowledge is super super good, so the sega ST-V arcade hardware was taken and literally put inside the Sega Saturn, when you take the top off the Sega Saturn home console you’ll see the sega ST-V arcade hardware, so when sega ported the actual ST-V arcade version of Virtua fighter remix to the Sega Saturn aka “Home version of the ST-V arcade machine” the game got ported 💯% pixel arcade perfect cuz the same arcade hardware was literally in the Saturn so only difference was that the arcade machine used cartridges and the Sega Saturn used discs but the discs could still hold the full ST-V arcade version on it and then the arcade hardware in the Sega Saturn would run it just like arcade machine but except to your home TV set, Same thing with segas sega Dreamcast, the Dreamcast was an exact home version of the Sega NAOMI arcade hardware, if you open up a Dreamcast you’ll see all the exact NAOMI hardware inside along with the same GDR disc reader that you would see inside the Sega NAOMI arcade hardware, so porting Naomi ports over to the sega Dreamcast was 💯% easy and done with so much little effort aka making the Dreamcast home ports of the Sega NAOMI games 💯% pixel arcade perfect , the only difference in Naomi and Dreamcast is that the Naomi did however have more RAM so the Naomi loaded the game all at once AKA getting rid of all loading times completely, the Dreamcast ports had to load the game in chunks AKA resulting in some home ports of Sega NAOMI games on the sega Dreamcast to have very very slight loading times but there were so little on some ports that you didn’t even know that there was any loading times at all but the Dreamcast still was able to run the home version of the Sega NAOMI arcade ports at 💯% arcade pixel perfect speed/ graphics and FPS and everything
I know!... I'm starting to think that maybe Tao Pai Pai was based of a real life guy... and maybe Lau was based on that same person... either that or one of the creators of this game was a really huge fan of Dragon Ball, which considering that this game was made by SEGA that wouldn't surprise me at all.
@rickyjshiznit I was dreaming that that Space Gar might go multiplayer with a green triangle and a red triangle. Assuming edit station one can generate red on its green monochrome screen.
@newcoleco N64 was overall, a better option. That Sega Saturn was wasted. SEGA did a great job porting the arcade games, but everyone was really pissed off not knowing what system to release their games for in terms of SEGA's different machines. Licensing became an issue as well.
@transworld112 weird huh? but thats part of the magic in classic game room, its not the same as other companies, which in my opinion its what makes it better ;)
@LewdCrudeTattoo ET didn't cause the crash alone you know, it was a seriously of unfortunate events and ET was just the tip of the iceburg. Back then the market was booming, it would of been virtually impossible for the market to crash for the third time. The Megadrive/Genesis didn't fail in anyway shape or form, it didn't win but it showed that Nintendo was losing its grip on market domination.
It seems slow somehow. One hit takes a lot of damage and the opponent stays too long on the floor. But it's nice when the character falls off the arena, it's almost like there's some physics there :)
The best Virtua Fighter games are: 1. Virtua Fighter Remix (The best version of Virtua Fighter 1). 2. Virtua Fighter 2 (Saturn). 3. Virtua Fighter 3 (Dreamcast). 4. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (PS2). And Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown (PS3 and Xbox 360).
There is such finness in these games, real depth of combat, not just about memorizing combos like so many others. How do you figure VF1 is better than VF2 though? Also what do you think of Fighers Megamix?
@kyotoair Most popular console always has the most crap on it.. Who is winning in terms of sales in this gaming generation? I was refering to the Wii..
