Here it is, the new project Mini. Found on E-bay but I lost the auction only to later find the higher bidder messed the seller around so it was offered to the next highest bidder...... Me. The Mini is a 1997 Rover Cooper MPI and has been off the road in a garage since 2007! It's what some might call a barn find.
In this update I assemble the rear subframe ready to go back on the car.

I’m really enjoying this mini rebuild series. Thank You for taking the time to put these together. I’ve got a soft spot for classic minis. I remember replacing one of those knuckle joints as a teenager as the ball had snapped off the shaft, oh what fun.

Hi, This looks a superb rebuild and has just given me a boost in enthusiasm to get mine done and not skimp or put back any parts that don’t look mint! I’m also one for refurbishing and overhauling as many original items to the car rather than Trigger’s Broom of new parts. Could I ask which paint you used on the radius arms and on the drums? They look superb. Thanks David (restoring MG Metro) 😁

Hi Dave, good luck with the MG Metro. The paint I used was Hammerite Smooth

Try keying the paint before glueing the rubber pads on. With gorilla glue on top they ain't going anywhere.

Good point, I forgot to key the paint first.

Do the rubber pad go directly over the indents or half way up? can't really tell.

I don't think there was an exact position, I've seen them all over the place.

Don’t suppose you know where you got those other bolts from for the subframe , the ones that can change their own thread and have a shoulder on them ? I’m having the same problem with those brand new ones , won’t fit whatsoever

Hi @Classic Mini Workshop, what is it at 8:39 in the video that you are sticking to the back of the subframe? Also the rubber pads you glue to the top, what size and thickness are these? Thanks
@classicminiworkshop
@classicminiworkshop 7 месяцев назад
Pads are about 12mm thick and the tape is aluminum tape to cover the holes at the back of the subframe to protect the hole where the captive bolts are for the radius arm brackets

@@classicminiworkshop Thanks. Just read other comments and you seemed to have said they were 8mm on another reply, and then that you used 10mm closed cell foam on another mini too. I assume its not too critical? Thanks
@classicminiworkshop
@classicminiworkshop 7 месяцев назад
It all depends at what time you ask me! I've fitted loads of subframes and I tend to use what's laying around at the time. You are rights, it's not too critical, it's just there to stop the top of the subframe impacting the boot floor@@JB-NZ

Where'd you get the rubber pads from? Were they already on the subframe? Ours were Hessian pads which were destroyed on removal obviously. Any advice/tips on what thickness the rubber pads should be or is there somewhere to buy them?
@classicminiworkshop
@classicminiworkshop 3 года назад
I re-used the pads that were originally fitted. They are about 8mm thick. My older Mini had hessian pads and I just used some stick on closed cell sound deadening foam which was about 10mm thick.

Woulld it have been less back breaking/easier to build the subframe on the bench and have the parts on the floor?
@classicminiworkshop
@classicminiworkshop 4 года назад
It wasn't too bad as I had already pre assembled the brakes and back plates.

Keith you made putting the radius arms on the rear subframe seem so simple even though it was sped up. I have been fighting with the bracket that fastens to the subframe trying to get the holes to line up so I can bolt the bracket to the frame. It's very frustrating and I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what I can do to get the holes to line up. It's the original subframe and radius arm and bracket. Do you have any ideas?
@classicminiworkshop
@classicminiworkshop 4 года назад
A couple of tips I've picked up along the way. 1). Use the old brackets 2). Use the original type of bolts that have the shoulder at the bottom (helps with alignment) 3). Fit the radius arms and brackets with the subframe out of the car

@@classicminiworkshop Thanks Keith, I followed all of your suggestions,plus I used grade 8 bolts and got rid of the stainless ones I was using, and ran a tap through the captive nuts to get rid of paint in the threads, also there was a small lump of metal projecting from the frame near where the radius arm pin passes through the frame which I ground off and after that I managed to get all four bolts in. Eureka! The other side was no problem at all. Thanks again for your suggestions. Cheers.
