In 1942, Jimmy Cagney broke away from his tough guy gangster persona and returned to his musical Broadway origins to portray the renowned performer and impresario, George M. Cohan, in Michael Curtiz's YANKEE DOODLE DANDY. This outstanding performance earned him an Oscar. Co-starring Walter Huston and Joan Leslie, the story covers the life and career of the legendary song & dance man who wrote some of the most well-known and beloved popular and patriotic songs of all time. It’s a James Cagney tour de force and one you won’t want to miss!

Oh, Steve, like this joyous film, you hit every note with an eloquent, heartfelt, and emotional review. Not only is it a testament to Cagney (who was miraculous) and the source, but that final tap down the stairs and your tearful salute was a reminder of what true patriotism is about,, and not the abhorrent mess it's become. Well done, Mr. Hayes, you brought a tear to these old eyes. Michael - South Africa

I can see this was a heartfelt review, thanks Steve. I’ve only seen Cagney in ‘Love Me Or Leave Me’ w Doris Day. Even though he plays a tough guy/bully you still have a soft spot for him in the end, not easy to pull off. To me he’s in the same league as Spencer Tracey, you forget they’re acting. As wonderful as Cagney is in that movie, it's Doris Day who really shines in that one. The fact that she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar is one of the great all-time blunders of the Academy. Not for this, but for "Pillow Talk''.? Not a bad movie, but no comparison

Day or two later a delivery man deliveries a package inside is a portrait of a Man standing in the rain in Paris painted by James Cagney. Burt was shocked all he meant was a photo not a hand painted portrait. He calls Cagney to thank him and Cagney wife answers and Burt ask for James and tells her it's Burt Reynolds she tells James and Burt hears him yells. While on the whole, I wasn't taken with the movie, but there's a scene with a celebratory dinner where Eddie Foy (Bob Hope, age 52) jaws a bit with George M. Cohan (James Cagney doing a cameo, age 56). They eventually each get up on the tables to square off, and the sequence becomes one of those perfect moments of grace on film, just absolute bliss...Much of the movie may elicit some yawns, but those thirty seconds to a minute will have you using each of the three hankees you brought with you to the movies.

Fox appeared on the Donahue show back in the 80s, and he received a call from none other than a representative of James Cagney, expressing Mr Cagney wanting Michael to play him in an biopic...which floored Michael. It's unfortunate that Michael, due to his struggle with parkinson's disease, never got to play Cagney...but I think young English actor Tom Holland, with his training in dance and musical theater, could play Cagney in a biopic

Another great review Steve, and how lovely to hear you wax lyrical about Michael Curtiz, one of the greatest directors of the studio era, and one of the most undervalued; he should be spoken of in the same way as Ford, Hitchcock, Wilder, etc., etc.

This is one of my real favorites ever since I first saw it on TV as a kid. It has so much going for it and Cagney is an absolute wonder. I never understood why he didn't dance in Footlight Parade but suspect Warner's thought it would harm his tough guy image. There's a rare clip of Cohan dancing in I'd Rather Be Right online and Cagney had his style down pat. Something I also like is that for once the musicals shown are all in the order that they actually came out and the songs are shown in the right musicals, something Hollywood rarely gets right. Poor rosemary DeCamp played Cagney's mother and she was much younger than him. I also love the scene when he joins the parade while the troops are singing Over There and one of them says (something like) "What's the matter Pops, don'tcha know the words? Gets me every time.
