the amount of times you say something and then Stephen confirms with a small detail different during these is fascinating, you could be a Canadian QI elf lol

When you’re reading the credits it’s always worth checking what John Lloyd is credited as, it changes every series, sometimes every episode. He created the show and was on it once too.

Me too. It was one of the first episodes that got me hooked on QI. I'd never seen a comedy panel show like it. I've learned a lot of my fun facts from QI

Bronze: when tarnished, is a bright blue, blue-green or green colour. Edit: Ok, it's pure tarnished copper that also turns blue-green and green. Tarnished bronze is a more uniform sky blue/turquoise colour. I'm completely unconvinced Homer or any ancient Greek described the sea or sheep as red. Homer routinely described the sea as "Wine-dark". Ancient Greek wine was not only unfiltered (an extremely dark, browny or blacky purple or extremely dark brown with a red tinge on the edge, or black with a red tinge if viewed in clear glass) it was also routinely served flavoured with resin, spices, herbs, sea water, brine, oil or perfume. We don't even have pictures of flavoured unfiltered wine. Unfiltererd white wine looks like heavily coloured urine. Discriptons of the appearance of ancient greek wine are of either an extremely dark liquid, or of a tawny or almost clear liquid. Whatever it looked like, Ancient Greek wine was *never* red. I'm inclined to think that whenever Homer described the wine-dark sea with his winged words, he was talking about the sea at night time. (Winged-words, another Homerism. Think homing birds as the primary transport of words.)

The thing I like about the early ones, that I think you will too is even though they're shorter, I think there's more laughs per minute. The pilot episode is certainly one to check out...before they really had screens, or much of a set, or buzzers! You COULD do (and I suggest it) the unaired pilot AND Series A episode 1 in the same video. HUGE contrast, great guests, and about an hour of content.

ALL of the episodes that were put out before they began offering XL, series F I think, are well worth enjoying from the no-budget beginning. "The Making Of QI" 2011 is also worth seeking out.

I think the most memorable episode of the A series is no 2. Highly recommend you check that one out, there’s a key moment of QI that keeps cropping up throughout future series because of it.

A few more episodes you might enjoy: Series 1 Episode 11 - Beats Series 3 Ep 8 - Corby Series 4 Episode 5 - Death Series 4 Episode 11 - Divination (The only episode so far without Alan in it, he went to go watch Arsenal lose another game of football) Series 5 Episode 5 - Europe Series 5 Episode 12 - Empire (A Christmas episode that doesn't really mention Christmas. Lots of Bill Bailey and Sean Lock nonsense.) Series 6 Episode 5 - France (One of the first ever XL episodes) Series 6 Episode 9 - The Future (Features Ben Miller, a comedian and actor who also displays significant knowledge of physics in the episode) Series 7 Episode 15 - Green Series 8 Episode 3 - Hoaxes

“Sweeties” is a synonym for candy. Not a surreptitious reference to smarties.
@samfisher6606
@samfisher6606 2 года назад
Alan didn't really realize that he was there to play the fool so he tried to show off how smart he actually is, which Alan is very smart. The producers eventually convinced Alan to play the fool but I think Stephen's treatment of Alan is him trying to get Alan to look like the idiot he is supposed to play.

I think Steven was a bit harder on Alan in the early days , maybe to establish he was there to take the hits and save some of the others from looking daft . Once the show became established everyone knew what to expect and he is now maybe there to help keep things going and outwit the elves . In early days you weren't sure where it was going but it was always " Quite Interesting " and always produced some good laughs with it .

Masa maybe? But that's a few steps later. Would be made into what would be polenta or grits, I'd say the closest would be 'atole' which can then have other ingredients added much like polenta and grits...

What makes the fact that Homer (as in the author of The Iliad) called the sky bronze-coloured is the fact that he was blind. That puts a whole another twist onto me trying to figure out why they could call the sky any other colour than what it clearly is :D

The pilot is interesting as the presenter was supposed to be John Lloyd whose the creator of the show, Stephen was supposed to be an intelligent captain, and Alan a not so intelligent capt, but it all changed in the pilot.

I think when the show was first thought up Stephen fry was going to be a team captain against Alan, and it was going along the lines of intelligence vs ignorance, but as you can imagine that probably wouldn't go down well, so they changed the format to what we see today
@karlmortoniv2951
@karlmortoniv2951 2 года назад
The way I heard it that was the plan, and they were going to have Michael Palin be the host. He was seen to be the best of both worlds. But Palin didn't want to be tied down to a regular series and declined the gig and they couldn't come up with anyone else who ticked both boxes and was on an equal footing with Alan and Stephen so the format shifted to having Fry be the host.
