Classic Races - Pikes Peak (The race to the clouds)
__________________________________________________
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as The Race to the Clouds, is an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA. The track measures 12.42 miles (19.99 km) over 156 turns, climbing 4,720 ft (1,440 m) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway, to the finish at 14,110 ft (4,300 m), on grades averaging 7.2%. It used to consist of both gravel and paved sections, however as of August 2011, the highway is fully paved and as a result all subsequent runnings will be on tarmac from start to finish.
The race is self sanctioned and has taken place since 1916. It is currently contested by a variety of classes of cars, trucks, motorcycles and quads. There are often numerous new classes tried and discarded year-to-year. On average there are 130 competitors.

Well worth watching! Really captures the evolution of the "hill" as good as a short documentary could.

Fantastic early footage. To think those guys were doing it on loose dirt tracks, with those ealy braking systems too. They most certainly had balls of steel. Excellent video.

27:10 Man, Bobby Unser was smooth as butter. No wasted motion. I think the race was better on dirt. It's too bad they paved it.

AWD changed everything at Pikes Peak just like it did so for rallying and Australian/Japanese Group A racing.

Thats so great in the POV part around 14:00 you can see the driver on many occasions initiate a drift before a corner to improve cornering. great driving. And solid work with the video, good music choice!

You know what the makers of Dirt Rally video games should do? A strictly Pikes Peak game, allowing you to play through every year of Pikes Peak driving any of the cars actually entered that year.

considering the loose surface/poor traction, tire, suspension, brake components... quality, the high altitude thin air engine troubles, the times they achieved were blistering fast! that car is like a snake, all over the road! man´s got some serious driving skills

Is Unser still mad about losing to Ms. Mouton in '85? Why didn't he race her back down the hill when she asked if he "had the balls" to?

So they already had automatic air/fuel mixture system in the early 90s yet now in 2020 most race car have stupid knob to ajust mapping on the go why tho(f1, lmp, gt you name it) they all have the ugly rectangle steering wheel with way to many button and knobs

It started out as a dirt road then they paved the bottom portion but the race still was on dirt for the top half...then the damn democrat mayor of Colorado springs bitched and moaned about how unsafe it was for the public and the nanny state ended up paving it all the way to the top...sometimes progress isn't progress at all.

Good job completely covering up the engine sound with that obnoxious music (noise). No one wants to hear the sound of a screaming offy or small block, (they might get an erection)

Ak Miller was a racer's racer. He built a couple beautiful cars and a couple really ugly ones! He wasn't doing big league stuff like NASCAR or Indy, but whatta sportsman racer he was. Much like Mickey Thompson.

No seatbelts, no helmets, no rollbars, and their heads sticking way up out of the car! Early race drivers were brave, but they weren't very smart!
@armorgeddon
@armorgeddon 3 года назад
Well, they were smart (most) in that they didn't push to the max and left some very small margin while today's racecar drivers drive like they're invulnerable and in circuit racing often approach the limit from above it especially on circuits with asphalt runoffs.
