In 1984 my grandparents gifted my mom and dad a JVC VCR. In 1983 I discovered drag racing and with the new video cassette recorder I recorded the 84 U.S. nationals. After viewing the race easily over hundreds of times within a year or so the tape finally gave out. Now 51 years young I can still see myself sitting on the living room floor watching my heros! 🤘🏼
Dave McClelland, Steve Evans, and Bob Fry could say just about anything and get my hair to stand on end. Oh wait, don’t forget Bill Doner, he had a gift for that!
I WAS AT THIS RACE . I'M FROM COLUMBUS OHIO . GREAT TO SEE JIM HEAD GET HIS FIRST WIN IN FUNNY CAR . PLUS TO SEE BIG DADDY GET HIS 6th AT INDY . A GREAT WEEKEND THAT I'LL NEVER FORGET .
Miss Pat Garlitz looking very young in 1984. Rest in peace Mam!. Got her and Big's autograph on the same sheet in 1985 at a SuperShops? meet and greet/ fund raiser thing. She laughed about it, Big smiled and said, "thank you".
Totally agree, absolutely wonderful people Don & Ms Pat! It just broke my heart when the news of Ms Pat's passing was announced 😖 They were both great with the fans & wonderful ambassadors for the sport of Drag-Racing 🙏 RIP Mrs Garlits, for you are LEGEND too! 😞
This race made me a Jim Head fan, I know it was only luck, but he won ! He had bad luck many times after, mostly it was a lack of sponsors. You could never tell if he could win, but when he did it was great watching an underdog win. His car simply said HEAD most of the time !
In the uk a tv programme in conjunction with the owners of santa pod raceway built a slipstreamer top fueler with no wing, it was to be driven by the program presenter,a lady with no drag racing experiance. She did a couple of idles down the strip and 1 ,100ft launch. It scared her silly and they got an extremely experienced fuel driver dennis priddle to make a pass. He dam near flipped it and was all over the track, only his reactions and experiance saved a massive crash. The car was stripped of its ' aero bodywork and rebuilt as a normal rail. Dennis said the hardest thing to do is to get your foot off the throttle (as its in a sort of cage) as you automatically brace yourself fearing a crash is coming.
I wish I could've made it to Indy. My dad did, racing their BB/GD a few times in the late 60's. He has pics & home movies from back then. They built their own cars & trailers then. I can still remember riding in the truck push starting it at our home track, New England Dragway, who he was partially responsible for it being built. Miss the old days.
So great! I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this! Watched from start to finish. Super happy to see Big Daddy win. What happened to Snake though? I saw he was there talking to Garlits in the pits but did he not qualify or did he just come to watch? And where was Shirley? She also didn't qualify?
Think Snake went out in round 1 & not sure, but I think Shirley was out injured from her terrible crash in Montreal, I'm sure you can google the crash year to double check 👍
My Father & Uncle knew Larry Minor & I actually hung out with his daughter Jamie in the late 80's. My family is from the same area in So-Cailf as Larry & The ACE, both great guys. Don't recall Larry selling potatoes, but he owned a company called "Rain for Rent" which certainly fed water to many MANY potato fields! 😉
