We purchase tons of pre-owned records, and can attest that some are much more common than others. But just because they're "common" doesn't mean they aren't fantastic albums. In this episode of Talking About Records we highlight some of the LPs we run across the most, because they are essentials, and virtually everyone owned them back in the day.
✶ Talking About Records is presented by NTX Vinyl, a local, independent, chain of community based record stores in the DFW area.

Boston's first album is on top of the list. Frampton Comes Alive, KISS Alive, Cheap Trick at Budakahn. Oh yes! Don't forget The Steve Miller Band's Greatest Hits 1974-1978. I don't have that anymore but do remember it was a big seller.

I would add Boston's first album to the list. Its sounds as fresh today as it did in the 70's!

I agree. I watched the whole episode waiting for GI to pull it off the wall. Boston's debut album is essential!

You know what's hilarious. This was going to be my "Top 10 Classic Rock Staples" - and I think I even say that in the video. Boston S/T was #10, and I forgot it! So there are only 9. An hour later I walked through my office and noticed an album sticking out...that I was supposed to included. Ha!

Funny -- I have a pretty large record collection which runs from the turn of the twentieth century to present day, but I have a grand total of two of the records you listed.

Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced is definitely another one. And I would think Deep Purple - Machine Head probably too. But like you said, there are plenty of other ones also :-) Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

for sure. Lots of common ones in that list. Especially the Jackson Browne

All great selection for the "commons" in most classic rock/70's collections. We see those ALL the time as well. If the list extended past 10 we could add Boston S/T, Pink Floyd The Wall, The Who Who's Next, The Styx Grand Illusion, and Peter Frampton Frampton Comes Alive lol.
@mberg1956

I have 7 of those and most of them were purchased back in the 60s/70s. For the "next 10", I would think Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed", Iron Butterfly "In-A-Gada-Da-Vida", and Jefferson Airplane "Surrealistic Pillow" are pretty common and essential to collections. I'm going to add Jethro Tull "Aqualung" but that may not have been as common. I was going to mention Boston "Boston" but I see in the comments you had selected it.

Nice video. I'd love to see this with other genres or eras. Pop =Thriller, Jazz=Breezin, Billy Joel fits in somewhere.

Oh that could be fun. And yeah, just about any of Billy Joel’s 70s/80s albums could make this list.

I owe you a proper comment and this was an very interesting video. I agree with all of your choices. I have them all and they are fantastic records. I appreciate that you discussed the prices. Some people assume that these records are a lot more expensive than they actually are - especially Led Zeppelin. Take care.

Especially, the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, don't overpay for a used copy unless your certain it plays excellent Their repressed records are pretty good and are around $25. On a side note, I received my Mystery Box this week and I'm quite impressed. Only one record I had but that one was not in good condition so it's an improvement. Loved the 45s too. Thank you.

I started collecting LPs in the late sixties. Most of your picks I have in my collection. In addition, these are some of the common titles I would find in friends' collections. I'm not from Texas so geography plays a role... :-) Bat Out Of Hell, The Best Of Abba, Living In The Seventies (Skyhooks), Works (ELP), Tubular Bells, Watermark (Enya), A Night At The Opera, Welcome To My Nightmare, Quadrophenia, Quatro, Hotel California, A New World Record, The Blues Brothers, T.N.T. (AC/DC) and Dirty Deeds (AC/DC)

Fun list. I don't have any of the greatest hits records you mention (I used to have a copy of the Eagles' "Desperado" that I bought new in 1973, but that's about it) or the Fleetwood Mac, but that's just my taste. There was a time when used record stores seemed to have entire wings dedicated to unwanted double albums like "Frampton Comes Alive," "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Saturday Night Fever."
@NTXVinyl

That still holds true. Very very common. All of those

I have all of these except the CCR. In my area, an OG Rumours is getting really expensive, $30 to $35. I ended up getting a new reissue ‘Pressed at Pallas’ for $20 instead.

That’s ridiculously overpriced IMO. I sell them for $15-20 in strong VG+ condition.

I have CCR, Floyd and Zep4 on vinyl and the rest I just stream. Paring down my collection to what I'll actually listen to and even though all of these are sure things they just wouldn't get any spin time from me.

1500 records since mid 80s, only Rumors part of it, and even that is an outlier. The important thing is, only buy records you actually like. "Must have" lists are DOA.
