We Finally dive into the engine disassembly on this classic Suzuki LJ80! Broken engine hoist? no problem! 10T gantry crane to the rescue!
We launched the engine onto an engine stand and stripped all of the parts ready for cleaning and rebuilding. Safe to say it definitely needed doing as it was clogged up with the usual residue. We are looking forward to getting the engine back in and running again!!!

Always nice to see an engine strip down even though that one would have benefited from rather more oil changes than it's had in its life. But I think the overhead crane will never talk to you again, after the embarrassment of being asked to lift something that probably weighs less than its hook assembly!

It was nice to get stuck into stripping the engine and seeing what was going on in there! It would have benefitted from more oil changes yes, but hopefully we can get it looking brand new soon! Also, you are right! that hook assembly is heavy! But i just wanted to take it for a quick walk to stretch its legs

This car has done more offroad than on road by the looks of this engine! Buy this is decent Japanese workmanship, so I take it that the clearances will be just as the factory specified! Nice one! Learning on the job! Best thing ever!

Good vid Ryan, Yes the "Suck it and see" is the best way. Ive pulled and stripped plenty. 2 bits of advice on your engine use a longer tube on the wee black one that came with the stand. It gives you more control over the turn and finally. Power wash the engine outside . Stops all the shit that is on it now having to be cleaned when the ports are open. Go on Yersel bud. Later

Great video. Try to grab a factory service manual. It goes down to the last bolt on the engine, transmission and suspension.

Yes, it was enjoyable to strip the engine down! Makes a change from all the rust let me tell you! And yes, for this one, but the Disaster Datsun on the other hand is a whole new beast

Twin turbo with 8 inch exhaust and racing slicks. Or maybe just a nice clean and put back together haha!

Now you've done all that throw the 800 lump away and get hold of a 1 litre F10 engine complete and drop that in instead, makes a big improvement and, depending on which version of the F10 engine you use, virtually a straight swap. Get rid of that carb as well, not very reliable, fit an SJ410 or a an SU or Stromberg.

@@yorkshirecarrestoration Whizz kid SC100 were the best as they had bigger valves, but pretty rare now, SJ410 are the easiest swap, basically just swapping sumps manifolds etc and cutting down the gearbox layshaft as most SJ's had a spigot bearing in the flywheel rather than the crank (apart from pre 85 ones), Rascals/Supercarry's have the F10 engine but there is no cam to drive the fuel pump. Got at least 3 spare F10's but I'm keeping them!

I definitely (almost) knew what I was doing! Ahh not a problem! It was nice to get stuck into stripping the engine to see how it looked inside! Also I have seen people putting Datsun 6 cylinder blocks on these types of stands. They have a decent load rating (450kg max load)

I was having second thoughts when lifting it for the first time! Haha. We have 2 blocks for the crane too so I was only using half of its capacity (5T :D) But it just managed haaha

Hi Ryan well that made a pleasant change for us & you,don’t think that engine has had a lot essential maintenance IE oil& filter changes or antifreeze/ coolant additive etc , well done another great video hope you remember where everything goes 🤣😂👍( only joking ) .

I'm afraid you cannot assume that from an 1980's engine. An engine from that age with the oil changed twice a year would look like that as the oil quality in those days were poor. An engine from 15 years ago would look cleaner inside as the oils were better at cleaning the engine internal. The main reason for the rust inside the cooling system was that the pre 2000 antifreeze had anti corrosion chemicals that only lasted a few years. The car had not been stated for 15 years some 2 years ago. When it started after some normal recommissioning. I would say after whet we seen in the fourth Suzuki video that it had been looked after engine wise when it was a running vehicle.

It did make a nice change! I enjoyed getting stuck into it and stripping it down, it was just a case of taking my time and looking how things came off. But it was very simple and I'm happy how it turned out. It only took just over 2 hours to do the full strip. And yes, its always a worry as it is easy to take something apart, but a lot more difficult to put it all back together! I made sure I put all the bolts back into their holes when i stripped anything so I at least know where the bolts go :) Nothing words than a box full of bolts and no idea where they go!
