Classic Suzuki with a DANGEROUS PROBLEM

In this video we work on a viewer's 1974 Suzuki TS250 enduro motorcycle. It is an almost all-original vintage machine in good condition. Evan, the owner, told us that it has a few issues though. The most serious one is a non-working taillight and brake light, which makes traveling on the street hazardous. So we do our best to figure out the problem and make the bike safer!

The only critique of your electrical work I can suggest is to turn your wire strippers around so the flat side faces out specially with older wires with hard plastic. By using the diagonal side of the strippers to pull the outer plastic off you are putting pressure on the wires by forcing the plastic against the wires, this can also cause you to lose some strands of the wire. Turning the strippers around so the flat side is facing out takes the pressure off the outer casing of the wire, makes it a lot easier to remove and very rarely if ever takes strands of wire with it. Some people will say that this leaves an ugly diagonal cut of the plastic as opposed to a clean looking flat cut but the up side is the diagonal cut helps seal the wire from the elements and 99% of wires will either get some sort of covering and you will never see the ugly cut anyway. Another upside is that when you soldering wires that thin diagonally cut plastic will heat up and give a better seal where the solder runs down to the plastic. And for those that still don’t like the ugly cut of the diagonal side then do a initial cut with the flat side in and turn the strippers around so the flat side faces out to relieve pressure from the wires and make it easier to remove the plastic outer.

I always struggled with soldering. Then I started using flux. You need flux to solder, it is a serious gam changer.

Don't rely on the flux in the core of your solder alone. Like the man said, "Flux is Your Friend". Also, try not to use lead free. Lead, outside your body, is your friend, in solder.

Excellent video as always! Great job on the diagnosis and repair. I just had to add a comment, because my second dirt bike in life was a 1969 Suzuki Savage - very similar to Evan's bike, but mine was totally stripped down (except for a speedo). I was 15, and it was time to move on from my Honda 160. The Suzuki was a bit of a unicorn - the guy I bought it from had set up a twist grip on the left hand handlebar to activate the compression release (unlike the little short compression release levers that the bikes had in that era). I got used to it and just left it that way. Evan's appears to be in great shape. Thanks for posting! You guys are awesome! Congrats on the new house too!

@HeyItsJonSchwartz
@HeyItsJonSchwartz 4 дня назад
Your repair worked just fine so this isn't a critique more than it is an opportunity to discuss. When you fanned out the strands and wire wheeled them, I probably would have just cut further back and used a butt connector to splice in a small piece of new wire. It wouldn't have looked as clean as your repair, but it may have been electrically stronger. When you were first diagnosing it was looking like the light wasn't getting enough voltage. I'm worried the corrosion in the wire spells that something like this is still going on and/or will happen again in the future.
@banalpedant41

tip: You really should use a bit of flux on your solder joints. It pulls solder into clean joints with less heat used and much less chance of getting a cold solder joint.

Trouble with having soldered connections on something that vibrates a lot is over time, said solder cracks and breaks loose, it's why they tend to crimp connections, they're less prone to such issues... :)

My first real motorbike was a Suzuki 750 GSX from the early 1980's. It was a beautiful thing and ran like a dream too, but was traded in many years ago when I bought my first BMW in the GSA family. I am 60 next summer but still own and happily ride my curent BMW, which is one of the early partially liquid cooled R 1200 GSA's, so about 10 years old now but still looking and running as if it was brand new.
