Lydian mode creates something called "Tonal instability", which describes perfectly this situation. "Floating on the sixth" is a good name too considering that these progressions lead to resolve on the sixth grade even when they never do. Great video as always.

Big fan of this type of harmonic ambiguity. Another good example is a track called Face To Face by Paul van Dyk from his Album Out There And Back (2000). The chords are F# G#m E E. Could be 5-6-4-4 in B major, or 7-1-6-6 in G# minor, or god knows what. The top line of the strings and an occasional ostinato bass pattern mildly hint at B major, but it's all reasonably vague and everything floats along nicely.

Thanks for another interesting video. Keep up the great work. I would like to add that many songs use chords that have notes not in the tonic key. I come from a jazz background so this is prevalent but it is very common for a song in F major to have D7 chords (D F# A C) as a V-chord to a G minor chord. just to give one simple example. The song is still in F though, even if F# is not in the F major scale. I think that it is these out of tonic notes, and other modes like Lydian or Lydian Dominant as other commenters have mentioned, that make things really interesting to the ear. Beatport often gets the "key" wrong depending where it looks (and usually halves my bpm to boot) but I guess if it is limited to 12 majors and 12 minors it will often have nowhere correct to land.

Hi, I previously asked you about the difference between C major and A minor, as they consist of the same set of notes, and I managed to get to the bottom of it. The main problem is that people confuse mode and scale. They think that the set of notes from tonic to tonic represents the mode, which is a mistake. A mode is the organization of sounds based on certain principles over time, such as the resolution of unstable sounds to stable ones in tonal systems. For modal systems, like D Dorian, which has the exact same set of notes as A minor and C major, a different approach is applied, with characteristic degrees. In other words, you can form different modes using the same set of notes. A simple example: if you think in terms of tonalities, the chord progression Dmin - Fmaj - Gmaj can be analyzed as II - IV - V, and in this case, there is no tonic. However, it is actually a Dorian progression, with the note D being the tonic. So, it can be seen as I - III - IV.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 17 дней назад
Yes I covered that in the gangstas paradise video. It's one of those seemingly simple concepts that is intuitive to seasoned musicians but is extremely hard to explain to newcomers in layman's terms. Most of these are not modal though as the melodies and other factors point to a tonic.

Hey B! Big fan of your videos, they’ve taught me a lot 🙏 I’ve noticed that chopped vocals are key in many tracks, whether for ambiance or melody. In some tracks, the vocals are the only element that provides the melody and makes the track memorable. How do you approach creating such tracks without vocals? I struggle with finding fitting vocals and don’t have a mic or singers. How can I tell if my track is finished without vocals? Is there a rule like "It should be a banger even without vocals"? Cheers!
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 15 дней назад
I take 2 approaches. Tracks that are intended to be instruments vs tracks which are supposed to have vocals but don't yet. There are in-between tracks that have minimal vocals like fisher's losing it that I call a "dub" arrangement. Those are not reliant on melody though so I treat those like instrumentals. Arrangements for deliberate instrumental tracks are different, and if you don't know how to arrange without vocals then you need to be referencing tracks which don't have them either. If you're intending to make a vocal track but don't have the vocals yet then you can always just AI rip a vocal from another a track so you can work with that temporarily, finish the arrangement with that but mute it for the final mixdown, and release the instrumental of that hoping either someone will topline it for you , or you can find a vocal later. I always release instrumental first regardless of the final track's intention, as it's safer for legal reasons, plus you get an extra track for free which you never know someone may prefer.

Hi Ben, a question i've been wanting to ask, Reference Reference Reference, how do you go about creating a song from scratch, do you A) have the inspiration of a loop or a riff to start a song, then look for a track with a similar vibe and energy or B) hear a song and get inspired to create something on a similar level..??? I’ve noticed this as kind of a frustrating problem whenever writing chord progressions that center heavily on the IV. It’s interesting enough to not be as obvious as focusing on the I but ambiguous enough to feel like it’s unresolved and never going anywhere. I almost wonder if this is because historically in pop music we are so used to hearing a IV as beginning a bridge, break, or some other type of change from the norm.

I would argue that Safri Duo is in B major. For one thing, the chords shifted one semi-tone up are the same as in the intro to Time After Time which is clearly in C major. Second, the melody in Played-A-Live starts with and resolves to B. That's enough evidence for me. 🙂 Come to think of it, the pad sound also sounds a bit like the one in Time After Time. I wouldn't be surprised if this is how the chords came together. It happens to me constantly that I'm noodling with a synth patch and suddenly I recognize something I've played and get stuck on it.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 17 дней назад
Same scale as G# minor yes. But I would argue the melody wouldn't be centered around a B to G# if it was B major, F# would be used instead. Although I hear the last G# as the resolve, not the first B.
@streck0486

@@Bthelick Interesting. I can't help but hear the top line walking down in steps from E to B at the end of the 4-bar-loop as a resolution. The G# in the bass doen't even register with me. In any case, it's certainly not straight forward to assign a key to the song.

@@Bthelick no no it definitely isn't on a normal standard of what is considered modal interchange. I'd look at a Deadmau5 track or a Zedd track, even an old Kaskade track for modal interchange, but on a technical level it is modal interchange, just not as grandiose. Nahh I still prefer the modes explanation rather than the mental gymnastics necessary to accept that some songs can have key centers without ever visiting them. And the fact that key detection software can't handle music written in anything other than major or minor is on the developers, not on the users. Note that I do still think that both explanations are equally as valid, it's just a personal preference thing
