Hey Volks!

This video is with a 1969 Convertible Bug that was part of our "Find-A-BuG" program, a later model this time out. Much of what I show will also work with other VWs of this era and later. www.classicvwbugs.com/find-a-...
I make these videos because I get questions all the time from folks today that ask some of the most basic questions on how to operate certain aspects of a VW. It is remarkable to say the least. To me, it is a very simple car with basic operations. But in today's world, some folks just need a refresher course, or just a good ole helping hand! =)

Thanks for doing this video. Lots of useful information. Since 1968 and 1969 look very similar, a really quick way to distinguish the two is 68 had a finger cut out for the gas flap. 69 didn’t since it has a pull lever.

I had a new 69 VW sedan in college. Great car with the CV joint axles and higher final drive ratio that made the car handle much better and keep up with interstate traffic. 1500 single port engine was bullet proof as long as you did all of the routine maintenance. This car has been restored correctly with the stock fuel pump, carburetor, and distributor. Good to see the original generator also. Sweet car. Congratulations to the new owner.

How cool is this. The exact project I’m working on now, well actually it is temporarily on the back burner again as I am working on a beautiful 65 for a friend that just got it, except for being painted once, it is a rust free survivor. Anyway, my 69 body off resto is getting close, well closer, for final paint! I am absolutely dreading doing the top so Mr. Valone might be getting a call from us soon!

My 69 bug convertible that I had in high school in my senior year in 79 had the am/fm sapphire radio. It's 2023 and I'm 62. I can't afford a red on black 69 bug convertible in pristine condition. I bought the next best thing, an 03 tj, i6 with a 5 speed with heat! Miss my bug, but the pristine tj was soooo much cheaper and has heat.

Two things: it is safer to mount the fuelfilter under the car instead of in the enginebay. And for starting: two times the pedal is for cold start. Warm start you do with no gas or with the pedal to the floor while starting

Hey Chris good video. Thought I would mention- the fuel filter in the engine bay, isn’t that a fire hazard? I’ve heard some horror stories about them causing fires and that they should be placed in the line running out under the fuel tank?

So I have a 78' SB Vert just had a new cloth top installed. Whether the top is up or down I noticed that one of the rear quarter windows is slightly out of alignment. And, I was wondering if they can be adjusted at all. When rolled all the way up its slightly bowed out at the top so there is a gap of about 1/4" the other window lines up perfectly with a good seal. So Im assuming something is loose ot out of adjustment maybe within the track?? I could send you a photo if you like. Ive been asking around for some time now with no results. Thanks BTW it looks like this bug has a fire suppression system?
@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs 2 года назад
you can adjust the rear quarter window with the adjustment bolts on the B pillar at the top of the door jam, there should be two bolts there with 10mm heads to loosen. LMK

Chris-got a random question. Just got a 1969 convertible, love it! Im a short driver and must have the seat pulled all the way forward to reach clutch. With a 3 point retractable seat belt im noticing it doesnt function all that well the way it must sit low below window, not much leverage for the mechanism to engage smoothly and i pull out so much belt due to my seat being so far forward it really doesnt retract well. Thinking about a retractable 2 point or a non retractable 3 point…any thoughts or preference? Safety concerns with 2 point but non retractable 3 point may be a pain to fight it tangling up
@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs Год назад
They do sell good three point belts today that retract well. you could try spraying a lil WD-40 on the belt mech to free it up a bit. That has worked for us in the past.
@meaganfroh2812
@meaganfroh2812 Год назад
@@classicvwbugs thanks Chris! I ordered 2 brand new ones from jbugs and they acted the same way, its as if the angle is all wrong and then if you can get it to feed belt out it wont retract. Where do i spray the wd-40? Looks like there is a flap that opens to the coil of material but then the sides of the canister say do not open. Do you spray it right on the belt?
@classicvwbugs

@@meaganfroh2812 anywhere where there is mechanical movement. There has to be some metal rotational mech in there.

Until now, I was turned off by anything newer than 65. I’m rethinking and shifting after watching this segment. Leaning towards selling my 65 sedan w/ all numbers matching California Beetle. Question: Would you be interested in that? I’d then parley my funds into a newer bug? If not, can you give an idea of an slings price? A ball park price? Thanks Chris! 😃

Was this a late model 1969 VW Beetle convertible ? Enlarged front signals with side marker lights started with 1970 model year ...

Hello I find the videos very exciting. But I noticed something. In the engine compartment is a gasoline filter, gasoline filters should not be in the engine compartment of VW Beetles but always outside. The heat can cause the fuel filter to melt and this can trigger an engine fire 🙂

So is full synthetic oil ok or only conventional? I can’t seem to get a straight answer. The previous owner was doing 5W 30 conventional but it’s getting harder to find.

We just use basic oil 10-30w or straight 30w, and we have no issues. Nothing fancy.

@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs 2 года назад

@simoncrest5354
@simoncrest5354 2 года назад
thats an original VW water deflection plate so that water coming through the vents does not get to the engine. Its not a modern day auto fire extinguisher that you are thinking it is, although they do look similar.

That 69 has 70 turn signal lights which is probably why you didn't show the turn signal side marker lights on when checking the lights on position. Also you didn't show if the backup lights worked. Just an observation.
