I wish I'd been around for the start of Classic. Unfortunately I was going through things at that time and didn't have a stable place to live until TBC dropped.
The fact that even in SoD they try to race through leveling shows they don't understand people who love classic. Part of the magic of classic is each level you hit feels like an accomplishment. Getting to level cap isn't viewed as when "the game starts"
100% agree. I think they did this because this is a seasonal server though. The timescale is super compressed for the amount of content/changes they’re releasing, and a big part of the appeal is class balancing. They know people will want to try several different classes but will only have a short window to do so.
once in a multi generation, world altering event coinciding with the re-release of classic wow was the greatest timing imaginable. Hoping wow classic gets a resurgence, but I'm not sure it'll ever be the same again.
Whenever people are around I pretend that covid was so terrible. ngl tho, I worked a total of maybe 50% of 2020 - 2022 combined. The rest of the time they sent me home. Everyone else was home as well so there was no work. Still full salary. And on the days I had to come in there was no traffic, sometimes I saw 10 cars in 30 minutes. Petrol was super cheap and people kept their distance. It was lit as hell imho.
The ideal WoW in my opinion would just be Blizzard allowing community-made servers to be hosted as official ones. There are a lot of private servers that have had better ideas that Blizzard in the past years. It would open up the possibility of so many things, kind of like the Skyrim or Soulsborne modding communities.
As someone who never leveled horde 1-60 in classic, I’ve been having such a good time leveling on deviate delight on an undead priest. I’ve been taking it slow. I joined about a month into the movement and though it’s greatly slowed down, I’m currently level 35, doing all the zone quests on horde side, a lot of which I’ve never done even though I mained horde in WOTLK - Retail. I’ve been leveling all 5 professions as I go, exploring zones in more detail instead of taking the fastest routes, etc and it’s the most fun I’ve had in vanilla / WOW all together in SO long.
People need to remember that raid logs are NOT unique raiders. Cata’s popularity might be high…but it also might be much lower than people think. That might be why blizzard seems to still prioritize sod over Cata.
Honestly in my opinion I think what they should do is reset the servers once cata is at its end. Stop right there don't go any further because it's not classic
Based on the number of people I see on my server its still very popular. Maybe the servers have condensed - but its not just we're struggling. And with the sudden disappearance of many bots the game has actually improved quite noticeably. I mean more people play Cata then SoD. So Blizzard's favouritism isn't due to the numbers.
I've said it many times before and I will say it many more times in the future: The hype before and the release of Classic and the first 3-4 months after it were by far the best and most fun time I have ever had gaming and it will most likely never be beaten.
Yeah it’s hard to recreate anything like that. You just don’t get to give people a 15 years of video game culture orgasm like that. WoW had such a legacy, it was the shit in the 00’s
I'm so proud I was one of the 280,000 people to sign the petition!😅 Didn't play wow at the time due to university, and never played classic at all, but I'm happy to have made a difference.
On the exact day of the fith anniversary my raiding group/guild wich i've been playing with since phase 1 of classic disbanded for good. It wasn't running very good since the end of wotlk but cata sadly put the final nail in the coffin. Seeing this video just gives me chills remembering all the good times i had with this game and even though blizz is not the company it once was and they did some huge mistakes in the runtime, i will always be thankfull to them for the amazing time i spent in this game and meeting the awesome people i did...
I've known you since the early days of Classic and while I don't play WoW at all anymore, I believe there are many like us that will always keep an eye out for any kind of Classic+ announcement. As official hardcore servers have shown, there is just something about the kind of community the original WoW world encourages and is able to retain past the hype of launches. On a side note, congratulations on your journey! Your conclusion was heartwarming, I wish you success for the years to come ! (also ye should have advertised your LoL channel more maybe
I started watching (and subscribed) during the "Was it any good" series. It helped me a lot, and provided a great review of how things worked in Vanilla. I watched every video in the series at least 5 times. I also enjoy your voice, presentation of the information, and the general tone of it all. I'd like to see a Vanilla-classic-only server that would progress and fix the class issues: sort of like SoD, but more alt-friendly beyond phase 1, and more "expansions" within the world itself. Originally, Hellfire Peninsula was the planned endgame zone, before they made it a separate expansion. I'd like that, and for them to keep going, broadening the vanilla world, without really leaving it. Thanks for all your videos. I've enjoyed watching, and still do. :)
I've had a lot of fun reliving Classic-WotLK, at Cata I decided to stop as it no longer felt like the Classic I loved. I still like to play SoD but I'd kill for a proper Classic+
Would play classic 2019 version again, this game is amazing. Played multiple fresh servers and it was always fun. Just remember to take breaks between fresh servers to not burn out.
TBC was also the expansion where if your main income was from dailies, Epic Flying was a massive pain to actually get, so even later in the expansion money still meant something if you weren't one of the people who dungeon-spammed until 70 and then promptly complained about having nothing to do. :P
You know, the idea of WoW classic was lost on me once the moved it into the WotLK era. From this point onward, WoW was so streamlined that there was no more motivation for me to continue in Classic. Imo they should have frozen WoW classic in its BC state before the WotLK launch patch. I really enjoyed to finally play the rather difficult, slow and sometimes clumsy vanilla WoW once again, and also the whole BC era - but with WotLK the game became, well, casual, and at this point you could also return to the regular game.
Bro I just want to play TBC again, playing lock being the best lock in my guild and getting first Vestments of the Sea Witch, nothing feels as good man.
Love the videos, I don’t play much of any games anymore, just been too busy. But enjoy watching the videos while I go on with my day doing other things.
I didn't get to pay classic 2019, because from all the friends group I was the last one playing and just didn't feel like it. But SoD gave me the opportunity to enjoy classic as well as meet some good new friends. Thanks to the red hoodie guy in 2013 and to you all.
It was a weird ride. All we wanted was vanilla, then we got a pleasant surprise with tbc and I figured that was it. Somehow the train keeps going on though and now we are here in cata. Although I didn’t play wrath or cata, it just shows you the power fans have when they use their voices.
Been enjoying SoD so much in the recent year, taking it also with a different approach since its a seasonal - more as a game and not a minmaxing tryhard workish game. And I just love it. Definitely recommend it to anyone else. Just take a step back, dont take it too serious and really discover. Even though you think you do (lmao pun intended) know the world enough, I was surprised myself when I started paying attention to the small things and more of the RPG side of the game. And the fact its the predecessor of Classic+ is also a plus cause the feedback from what ppl enjoy on SoD will be important in making the Classic+ era much better than what it would be without this part of the journey. Its just my personal view, but wanted to share it with someone, cause ppl take SoD as a final product when in reality is a playground for us and the devs as well. :)
I think I've missed the best times in wow, which is legion and classic 2019 launch. I hope there will be something big coming to classic soon... Bought TWW and I regret it after just hitting 80, not the game for me. Not gonna play cata or mop classic, waiting for fresh vanilla server or something new
8:40 Oh me too. I miss those days a lot. Dungeon spamming with my guild for rep, questing on the side, doing professions for the pre-raid bis, raiding kara in multiple guild groups, seeing who would kill the final boss first. Gruul/mag... Oh I so want to go back
i absolutely love cata, but the complete lack of resources for it from blizzard is really depressing and off putting. not to mention the playerbase getting butchered from milking the dungeon patch as a standalone phase.. lol
Ummm did you play cata back in the day? Reminds me of the same game lack of support lol I still love cata regardless and enjoying it round 3 for me Apollo had me for awhile
Hi Willie, As a Classic player myself, I feel that Classic will slowly lose it's player base because of how good the War Within is, it's outstanding and so far could be one of the or the best expansion so far, my favourite is TBC but I must say the new expansion is really really good.
I’d absolutely love for it to just go back to fresh vanilla and restart the trilogy. Understandable that most people probably don’t want to restart the hamster wheel, but for me, the comfort of not having to worry about a random closure of the private server where you’ve invested time, is so great. I’d really just like to always return to the game in a moderately healthy state. Era is just kind of a nightmare atm. Highly doubt any of that will ever happen, but they’d have my money if they did.
Im of the opinion that there should have been a legacy server after each expansion or at least a seasonal server that refreshed every 1.5 - 2 years or something like that. So you can always jump back into the server you want, and if it reset every year or so there would always be people looking to jump back in while its fresh as opposed to a server thats been out for years and youre so far behind. Just my opinion but I think many people would also enjoy this system
I'm glad that the timing and opportunity worked out for you that your youtube channel took off and gave you an alternative way to make some extra money. You make great content and have soem good opinions, so keep it up and congrats again on your success.
I am totally convinced, that there won't be new MoP expansion. Cataclysm is the slow sunsetting of new Classic expansions, MoP remix was here just to make people go through the classic experience at an accelerated rate and they'll just abandon this thing altogether, before they meet with the inevitable WoD Classic meme/conundrum. Classic+ is definitely where it's at, and I think they'll keep on expanding on that concept. Even after switching from Vanilla to TBC i felt like I moved way too close to retail than I wanted.
I am in the same boat with SoD. I love troll stuff. Heck, my main Cata character is a troll with troll transmog. ZG is pure hype for me. The original 20mans are imo the greatest raids on Classic.
"magical and unrepeatable moment" this is why launches are such a big deal. Nothing else captures that specific experience than a launch. And is why Blizzard is such an asshole for paywalling TWW launch night.
I think Cata would be the best stopping point for following the normal WOW footsteps. This is the point there they can start to add different kinds of events and zones in the world. This is the step where they could change the Deathwing fight and might lead into a completely different Warcraft lore.
The more the classic version moves towards the current retail version, the more players will leave the game and eventually join the original classic era or seasonal servers.
Enjoyed your videos ever since i came back when Hardcore launched. I always loved classic WoW and i played it in its original state quite excessively. Really enjoying the SOD servers so far and playing with my own pace in a relaxed manner and my favourite classes with a little twist. Keep up the good work!
I'm really enjoting SOD at the moment. I like MC, I love the fact they made new sets for the different specs of classes with multiple roles. I can finally wear my tier set without actively griefing as a DPS Warrior! Finished is the era of wearing a hodge-podge of leather mail and plate just because itemization was terrible. I love the runes and how snappy they make the gameplay feel. I love what runes are doing to PVP. I took a big break when my first guild disbanded at the end of phase one, but I'm very glad I came back for MC and the lvl 60 raids in general.
Been watching since the beginning. Keep the videos coming. I'm down with other games being covered. I enjoy listening to your thoughts about Classic and WoW in generatl.
i dont play classic but i like watching your videos because theyre both entertaining and keeps me updated on whats going on in classic. hope to see more from you in the future and you should try guild wars 2 some time if your looking to branch out.
I wouldn't mind SoM2 server, along with the Era realms. SoM was a good version of Classic, but the community is splintered now. I'm back in the pserver community until Blizzard figures out how to maintain TBC Era or SoM again. Classic was a fantastic experience, the Covid lockdown really helped to boost the number of players imo.
Congrats on 5 years, you remain the best of the ClassicWoW RU-vidrs..maybe even WoW generally really because there aren't many that do old school proper youtube videos not just twitch highlights. I can't help but notice that classic has kind of lost its steam a little though. Not sure if this is just because of Cataclysm or whether it was always going to be an ephemeral moment in gaming.
The only real criticism I have of Cataclysm is Blizzard being slow on fixing bugs. Hunter in particular has so many issues that we just have to deal with - pet pathing on certain bosses (where they even despawn on Al'akir), boss hit boxes being 'weird' at times (aka, some bosses have both a big and small hitbox at the same time, meaning there's a significant grey zone for Hunters to deal with), Explosive Shot clipping, pets randomly reverting to TBC era stats. And yet I still play. As a Hunter. Because its fun. Is Tier 11 becoming a bit old hat now? Yes. But surprisingly less so then during Ulduar or ICC. I'm still having fun, I'm just looking at Firelands and thinking "soon, please".
It's crazy to me that Blizzard hasn't learned from Jagex' success and gone full classic plus mode. Especially not with the sub bumps following the classic expansion releases. There's a reason OSRS has overtaken RS3.
14:13 This is where SoD went bad in my opinion. They promised new hidden locations, quests, monsters, but there have been hardly any. The character itself got too much changes (such as runes) while the environment (zones, quests, possible new dungeons etc.) got too little changes.
1) should've been some changes (e.g. remove debuff/buff caps, TBC attunements are account-wide or rep-grinds accelerated with every 70 on account, etc. 2) should've stopped after WotLK with "era" or fixed servers for vanilla, TBC, and WotLK 3) should be working on SoM/D/seasonal to test for an eventual Classic+ based upon the best of the original trilogy +new content that fits into the "Classic" world
2019 WillE sub here: thanks for the years of fairly decent coverage of WoW Classic! I won't watch your Cata/Retail stuff or LoL content, but hope you have fun.
In all honesty, I've been enjoying cataclysm, but then again, I started in wrath (on a private server) and stayed there from 2010 until 2020 (I played classic, but also played the private server), so playing TBC and cata is incredible...(And I really hope it eventually reaches BFA, I played the tail end and P1 of shadowlands, BFA was fun, but SL soiled the taste for retail for me...)
