In this #worldwednesday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to an Indian Hindi-language song from about a decade ago called Tum Hi Ho. The song was recorded for the movie Aashiqui 2 and has garnered hundreds of millions of views across the internet. Then, we hear Indonesian fingerstyle guitarist Alip Ba Ta offer his instrumental cover. I play along a bit at the piano and offer my analysis. Spoiler alert...I really liked it! I hope you do as well!

Arijit singh is arguably one of the top vocalists in the world. You need to see the guy's works to understand how versatile and dynamic his voice is. Also, the sheer number of hits he has given is🔥

Arijit Singh is one of the most ordinary Indian popular singers to become this famous, in my opinion. Barely any distinguishing characteristics in his voice. Like a background vocalist at best. But hey, the crowd loves him. You can't really argue with that.

@@pacificblues2209No, I only know his popular works ('Tum hi ho' being one). I consider Mohammed Rafi great. Amongst later popular singers Sonu Nigam was distinctive.

Actually no. Mithoon in his interview has explained the song making very well. He didn't make the song before the movie by himself. He and the director of the movie are friends so the director asked him to make a song that captured the feeling of the scene in the movie. For which mithoon made this song. Arijit was his first choice for the song and all the other songs with some special exceptions because the director wanted to have one voice just like in the first movie. So mithoon actually never made the song with his voice because he is more of a producer/composer than a singer.

The complicity of two people has a magic that goes from number 2 to mutual help as if it were a single organism, let's imagine this multiplied by the population of the planet and we get an idea of a network of humanity. The original song sung with such exotically melodious voice trills is truly touching. Alip Ba Ta's version is complete by his playing with such sensitivity and calm mental concentration that we can hear the percussion on the staff participating in the melody. Imagination is the limit for everything in life. Y'all! :)

I was delighted to see your reaction to Tum Hi Ho, a truly lovely song from Bollywood. Indian film music is a world of wonder and something you would do well to investigate more. For example, the music of composer A R Rachman - his soundtrack for the film TAAL is a good start. The film is a terrific "watch" as well - another romantic tale. Please keep up the good work.

First time on your channel Doug Helvering, thank you for reacting to one of famous track Tum Hi Ho. Off course Arjith Singh great singer and the tune maybe simple as you mentioned but it is so affecting. So glad I have found your channel! Very insightful takes on the songs. Would be cool to see you react to some of the weirder rock. You've done quite a bit of Nightwish and I would love to see your take on metal band for kids "Hevisaurus - 100" which features artists from Megadeth, Children of Bodom, Marko Hietala from Nightwish and many others. The band has inspired a lot of young artists into genre. Another one would be Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah, which is quite interesting musically, especially since it won Eurovision song contest in 2006 being an underdog in mainly pop contest.

If you liked Tum Hi Ho, I would very strongly recommend Ilayaraja's work (though it may end up being a rabbit hole, lol). One of the greatest composers in Indian film music and a consummate master of Indo-Western synthesis. Check out the song Sundari Kannal Oru Seithi for something symphonic or Kannan Vandhu Paaduginran for a more funky/rocking blend. And for a wild fusion of strongly Carnatic melody with Western arrangements, Thoongadha Vizhigal Rendu. PS: He is hugely popular in the South Indian states.

In this vein, I guarantee you would enjoy a cover by guitarist/pianist Miyako, Japanese metal virtuoso with supergroup Lovebites. I'm coming here from the Bury the light video, and just want to encourage you to keep exploring these uncharted lands, that's how you get musical nirvana. Yes I'm the rare specimen that actually relates with both of these videos I am from India but am often astonished by the sheer number of views these brilliant songs have compared to what I used to listen to(I was the rebel sort that didn't listen to a lot of bollywood music when young).

Imo if you aren't familiar with Indian music, you are missing a whole lot there. I am an Indian, but if I am being really honest, I do feel that we have the best music in the world. Music talk is incomplete without Indian music. Here a few of my suggestions for you across different genres. They are like completely different from what you would hear in the west or other parts of the world. 1. Maula mere maula 2. Aayat 3. Saibo Do check them out and trust me you would become a fan of our music. This is just a tip of an iceberg.
