I think my initial thoughts on Goblin were that it had some surprising timbral choices and had a strange MV. Hearing it now in the context of the rest of the album, I feel like it's nice, but was perhaps a compromise between the aesthetic Sulli reaches as the album progresses and an attempt to make a more "normal" Kpop song. So it has those surprising textural shifts and the gentle, flexible singing style that work well throughout the album, but doesn't transcend like "Dorothy" does. I am curious what SM will do when they debut a new girl group. Because a lot of companies have been going girl crush lately (CLC shifting to a girl crush aesthetic for their last few comebacks, ITZY debuting possibly split-concept but at least partially girl crush, Everglow debuting in that style), but SM already have/had f(x), the group who are largely the foundation of the girl crush style, so...would they rejoin the trend with a new group to be essentially f(x) 2.0, or would they try to lead the way into something new that others weren't doing instead (perhaps like what Sulli was doing here)? The latter seems more in the spirit of innovation that I associate with SM, although if they could pull off a true successor to f(x), they could dominate the recent girl crush wave. They could also go somewhere between and try to follow up on Red Light - while Pink Tape has been widely influential (particularly on girl crush groups), the much darker concept of Red Light seems to have remained a beacon that other groups have hardly tried to touch. And there still aren't many genuine dark concept groups in Kpop - Dreamcatcher seem to be the main one now (and, while dark like Red Light, Dreamcatcher have a completely different musical style). So that's still a comparatively open space that SM could start a group in. Although putting together a rookie group with the maturity to pull off a dark concept without it seeming hollow or merely edgy wouldn't be easy.

@@SWCcomposer thanks for your reply and thats very true the "dark"/girl crush concept often gets very hollow and a little generic results SM could try to follow the path that fx began cuz red velvet music can be as quirky as fx music but they dont use the girl crush concept, it could be a darker version wich is something very uncommon in the kpop world

On one hand, I feel like SNSD are not one of SM's better groups (so seem an odd one to make a new group similar to); on the other hand, they were active in a time before a lot of recent developments in pop, so it's possible that a 2019 or 2020 update of SNSD with what SM/their composers have learned since then could be good.

@@SWCcomposer i also thought it's a weird idea but probably "group like SNSD" just means not a girl crush or something like that. As you said girl crush are common right now so maybe SM wants not to follow trends and make something opposite. Like they did with SHINee: there were common powerful concepts when they debuted with Replay.

@@ДаняТаргарян seems like they kinda listen to Yeri's opinion but thats it, i bet the biggest choices they get to make are subtle changes about the singing in the recording studio

SM actually don't give a lot of creative freedom.. Idk what exactly you mean but SM artist themselves (SHINee's Key or SNSD members for example) said it's hard to get your song approved, the company prefers to give their artists songs by foreign composers, even if it's solo. But yeah Sulli was able to release this selfprodused songs.

Chrissy Actually SM always risk in terms of music... You would think they would go the safe road - considering how money hungry they are - and put out only publicly friendly music... But they are the agency that created SHINee, fx, Red Velvet and NCT sound - which are far from being generic and boring...

sm doesn't go with the trends for money, they create the trends
