In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm taking a deeper look at A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. Of course, I've heard this iconic song several times, and I'm including it now as part of our monthlong celebration of Black History Month in the US. I was pleasantly reminded of the beautiful arrangement and lush orchestrational support...as well as Sam's iconic vocals. I also spent some time reminding myself of the inspiration for him writing the song as well as his tragic death at the age of 33. His music remains important. I hope you enjoy my look at this song. Cheers.

Sam Cook had so many good songs in his short career. He's considered to be a pioneer and one of the most influential soul artists of all time. Cooke wrote this as a protest song to support the civil rights movement, as Black Americans fought for equality. Some of the lyrics were inspired by an incident where Cooke and some of his friends were arrested for disturbing the peace after they were denied rooms at a motel in Shreveport, Louisiana because they were black. Cooke was deeply affected by the death of his infant son, who drowned in a swimming pool in 1963. He started writing more introspective songs and took an interest in black history and politics.

I've to and/or past every location that Sam was at on the final day of his life, including the RCA Records building, the restaurant site and P.J.'s nightclub (name was later changed to The Starwood, then torn down). I've even been past the site where the hotel once stood. I can't drive past that hotel site without thinking of the great Sam Cooke

Doug, thank you for doing what you're doing for black history month. I grew up on what's now called classic rock music that was basically white bands plus Jimi Hendrix. Many years later I'm still trying to fill in the gaps in my knowledge and experience of music made by black musicians. I don't think I had ever heard this song before in its entirety, and it's made me want to listen to more Sam Cooke.

Sam Cooke led the way for Musicians like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and others to use their talents and popularity to go beyond typical pop songs and occasionally focus upon social issues. This song, and Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" still get me misty-eyed.

Sam Cooke IMHO was the link between Big Joe Turner and Marvin Gaye. Motown began recording hit records about a year after Sam's death. Imagine: would Motown happen in 1965 if Sam, who had his own label and cache of artists, lived another 10 years?

It's 2023 and thank God, the change has come. It's tragic that he was killed so young. He was killed by a black woman who said she shot him in self defense. I mention that because it is never said by anyone, and a fact that I was surprised to learn.

Such a wonderful song - soaring vocals, and very poignant words (as much today as when it was first released - unfortunately...) Indeed, his untimely death was a tremendous blow to the music world. We can only guess at what greatness Sam could have brought us! Highly suggest, in honour of Black History month, to do Nature Boy - Nat King Cole. Always been a favourite of mine! Seeing as we're on incredible, soulful voices.

I can really hear how this guy must've influenced Journey's Steve Perry. Very similar voice and even the inflections like how he slurs between notes. Never got into this style of music myself, but this is still seriously so friggin' good. Can't get over how lush the arrangement is.

I am 70 years old, grew up in the Southern U.S., and got the bulk of my musical education from the great Soul and R&B artists of the 1960s, such as Sam Cooke. And so I mean absolutely no disrespect to Mr. Cooke and this rendering of his song. It is, as you pointed out, a national treasure. However, at least for my taste, I am more moved and fond of the version that was done by a contemporary of Mr. Cooke, Otis Redding. Another Brother that was taken from us in his prime. If you can find that version to listen to, not necessarily for the channel, but for your personal review, I am certain that you will find it just as memorable and powerful, if not more so. Although, since you are celebrating "Black History Month," maybe you could circle back near the end of February and feature Mr. Redding's rendition. Just a thought.

You shouldlisten to cover on this song by Greta Van Fleet. I don't know if you know them but they are young guys who are often asociated with Led Zepellin's style. Well, their first 2 albums were close to Led but I would say that they are slowly evolving further away. If you'd like to hear some of their original songs, the I would recommend "Highway Tune" or for example "When the curtain falls"

Well done. Enjoyed it. You are probably familiar with Nick's American Routes. He has in depth study of Sam Cooke. But …Wings of Pegasus's Fil, he really answers….what the heck it was, what made the music, look it up on YT. He breaks down Sam’s style. Might be two segments, look around to see. Mentioned but only on the surface….men always doing the talk….ask women…Sam Cooke was hot. He was so sexy, so smooth, he was singing from the heart. Crossed color lines like no other could. Nat was best best, but sexy singing, not sexy persona. Romantic yes, sexy is Sam. Young teen bought this 45, Shout. At that time, it was possible to play Side B only if you put it on the turntable upside down. To hear Side B…….Change is Gonna Come… I nearly fainted. Tears well up. The magnificence of the people. Of all the things I’m grateful for in my life…..to witness the American Civil Rights Movement …it’s one of the best things ever in my life.

First of all Black American Soul Music is classical music & the best version of this song is by Otis Redding. Who even asked for his opinion? Some random guy judging the Genius Sam Cooke is offensive to my eyes and ears. What he thinks is irrelevant. There's a lot of people who do with this guy does, there's only one Sam Cooke.
