In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Tool's Lateralus. I'm using the studio version on the Tool RU-vid Channel as my source recording (link to this vid below). I had a blast trying to figure out their complex rhythmic groupings. Great band!

Only Tool would create such an intricate song mathematically, and philosophically, and then tease their fans for overanalyzing, right in the lyrics.
@CarlosLiberated
@CarlosLiberated 3 года назад
Funny stuff. Given Maynard’s history, it probably is a slight tease, but he also infuses many meanings into his lyrics. Overthinking, over analyzing, separates the body from the mind. He’s talking about intuition and the importance of trusting your gut so that you can feel the universe and seize the opportunities that open up to people who can intuitively sense them.
@edostork8121
@edostork8121 3 года назад
I read somewhere in an earlier comment elsewhere that you can also interpret this overthinking-overanalyzing too literally or too negatively. The comment said that the other part of the text that mentions separating body from the soul is taken together with that overthinking-overanalyzing part. So with that, I understand that the lyrics would be about being holistic and try to find all the angles without simplifying. Basically, to embrace complexity and push yourself to grow as a human being which, for me, is part of the main message of the song.

@TheBeanis8

@@ViolentGenius LOL. Nobody would make that connection just because they know the Fibonacci sequence. Not on the first listen just like that especially. I'm sure this guy is a great composer and all that but if anyone actually believes he didn't look into beforehand, they're just fooling themselves. It's not a big deal either so no reason to defend the guy, but like someone else said it would be cooler if he'd admit it rather than pretend he just happened to make that connection the first time ever hearing the song, lol. I like your username though.

@TheBeanis8
@TheBeanis8 2 года назад
@@ViolentGenius this isn't a direct comparison but it's sort of like the videos made today that are blatantly obviously staged even though they try to pretend that they aren't. With those, you don't know the 'beforehand' either and are still technically making an assumption, as obvious as it is. This is similar.. I wouldn't call these reaction videos "staged" but I would say that there are lots and lots of them that the listener has in fact listened to the song beforehand and yet presents the video as though they hadn't. Ultimately it's not that big of a deal but it is a little deceptive. If I'm wrong about this guy I would gladly eat my crow but I would say with 99% confidence that he didn't just make the Fibonacci connection from his first listen ever, regardless of him being a composer. Am I saying it's IMPOSSIBLE? No. But it's pretty damn unlikely. Especially for a person who just also so happens to be doing a reaction video on RU-vid. Maybe there's a few people in the world who could hear the song one time and make that connection but to also have it coincidentally be a person doing a reaction video on RU-vid, well to me that's just more than obvious that he did a little research beforehand. Anyway, have a good day.

Lateralus came out when I was in College. At the same time my psych course was teaching about cerebral lateralization. That first line talks about early brain development. Babies see in black and white, then red and yellow. The sequence starts at one, goes up to something much longer and ends at 1. I think the song is about getting back in touch with your intuitive child-like self and returning to that receptive state.

So I know I'm late to the party here but this song goes so far in depth with the Fibonacci that it goes beyond just the syllables in the verses. Song actually starts at 1 second rather than 0 on Tools posted YT lateralus, so things may seem 1 sec off, but going off my song library song starts at 0 sec. - Syllables in each verse go (1) black, (1) then, (2) white are, (3) all I see, (5) In my infancy, (8) red and yellow then came to be, (5) reaching out to me, (3) lets me see - The introduction part of the song in 4/4 time is 01:12 long. 0,1,1,2 are the first four numbers in the sequence. - The first verse starts at 97 seconds. 97 seconds is 1.617 of a minute. Which is approx the golden ratio found in the Fibonacci (1.618) - Each verse is 55 seconds long. 55 is the 11th # in the sequence. - Time signatures within the main or chorus riff is 9/8, 8/8, 7/8. 987 is a number in the sequence.

Was going to point out this exact thing. Throughout the song most every major change happens around golden ratio, fibonochi, and primes. Not just the lyrics but also beats measures meters are mathematically immaculate. The white black red yellow also refers to the philosophers stone.... this song should be taught in schools.

I worked at Cello Studios when Tool was recording this album. I can remember the sheer power coming out of that studio just hearing it come through the walls while walking down the hallway-and also standing outside the door of the control room. It’s a music school thing. My masters and doctorate are both in composition, and the academic side of that is in analysis and history of music theory. As a musicianship teacher, I’ve taught those rhythms, and it just popped out at me when I heard it in the rhythmic poetry. Plus, I’ve heard Pneuma many times and was anticipating rhythmic complexity in this track.

@@Jalynfein You may be right or wrong. But another commenter said his pianist wife picked up on it on her first hearing. And he explains why he is familiar with it - it's used in classical music composition. So maybe he is fibbing about the Fibonacci, but it's worth remembering that just because someone can do something that you can't, doesn't mean it can't be done. Rick Beato can pick up on songs on first hearing, because his ear is trained and he is familiar with certain patterns that frequently show up in pop songs. Key of Geebs, also a composer, picks up on all sorts of different aspects of songs that many of us probably missed.
@Benni-rp9or
@Benni-rp9or 3 года назад
@@Bramble451 Key of Geebs also admitted to looking ahead at songs, so it's possible he knew about the Fibonacci sequence ahead of time. I'm skeptical as well that someone, even a musician would just pick up on that so clearly and early in the song on the first play. I also don't believe that the Fibonacci sequence is super common in music, or at least not commonly discussed. My wife is a pianist and has studied music and theory, she has a degree and has been playing for over 20 years and teaches lessons. I'm curious if she's aware of it, I'll ask her tonight. I'm not saying someone would never pick up on this, but in the day of RU-vid fame, some people will say or do almost anything to get recognition and subscribers.

"lyric -driven" is ironic since the way Tool writes their songs is the instrumental arrangement is done first and the vocals are done at the end. I suspect that a song that plays on the Fibonacci sequence in lyrics and music would require a more coordinated effort.

For years I was a TOOL fan, I practiced Aikido and studied Nietzsche - in the song Lateralus, I realized they all came together. The spirals in Aikido's philosophy of movement and Nietzsche's philosophy of "embrac[ing] whatever may come." And, no doubt, there's probably at least dozens of other references/influences that could be legitimately inferred and or mined from just that single song. Nietzsche once wrote that he was writing for an audience probably not yet born. I believe TOOL is writing for future generations that will still marvel at their art. TOOL. RULES.

I love these analyses by professional musicians. It shows that many of these heavy "rock" bands are not just pulling uot their instruments and making a bunch of noise. There is structure and intelligence. They really are musicians and not just a group of guys guys getting stoned and playing slamming their instruments. Also love that there are other Tool fans out there that like similar bands as I do (Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, etc.) which I believe led me to really liking and appreciating Tool.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I've only seen Tool live once [2019], and noticed the same thing. As a drummer myself, I always try to focus on whatever polyrhythmic magic is happening, regardless of who I'm listening to. After hearing a song two or three times, I've usually got the pattern recognized, and move according to that groove. But watching Justin live really messed with my head. I spent an entire song just focusing on what he and Danny were playing and could NOT sync that to his body movements. It was frustratingly fascinating. I ultimately came to the same conclusion you mentioned, and just stopped TRYING to figure out what his body was moving to. My theory is, that's some deep "third eye" sh!T, manifesting physically, and unconsiously to Justin. But it's COOL to watch!!
