#BlackSabbath #Dio #TheSignOfTheSouthernCross
In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to The Sign of the Southern Cross by Black Sabbath. The song is from Mob Rules, their 10th album, celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. This is as much fun as I've had on a Metal Monday in a while...a great track with a great message and powerful singing! Enjoy.

First time I heard Ronnie James Dio, I was hooked. One of those iconic, easily identifiable voices. I would put him in a class with Freddie Mercury.
@AlfW
@AlfW 2 года назад
I think Freddie's voice has more range and is even more distinguishable, also he was more innovative as a musician and experimented way more. But I totally agree to your first and second sentence.
@ronnienose8608
@ronnienose8608 2 года назад
@@AlfW Well Ronnie rarely used falsetto like Freddie did, but live Freddie would quite often not go for the high note like on the original, whereas it was rare for Ronnie to not go for the highs. He also had more power than Freddie. Freddie was certainly a more innovative musician but I do feel that Ronnie was slightly ahead as a vocalist, definitely more exciting. Dio also had such control over his voice, but it took Mercury a while to tame his naturally fast vibrato. Roger Taylor didn't rate Freddie's voice on at least the first and possibly second Queen albums due to that lamb-like vibrato.

Queen are my favourite all time band so naturally Freddie's voice is going to be up there for me. But I'm also a huge Sabbath, and RJD fan. I first saw Sabbath on this tour. Dio blew us all away. He has the greatest metal voice of all time. In fact someone said his voice is the sound of metal. I agree. Martin Birch was an absolute master at his craft. I'm blown away each time I listen to the albums he produced. H&H in particular: It's hard to believe it was recorded in 1980! It still has a incredibly modern and well engineered sound. Comparatively, most other metal albums of the time sound like they were recording hobos screaming in plastic buckets, through a phone. Not all of them, obviously (for instance, I think Tom Allom was doing a pretty good job, too, although it may sounds a bit more dated by today's standard, but not that much), but Birch really was second to none.

Toni Iommi tuned his guitars down partly to help him with reducing the tension of the strings. He is missing two fingertips on his fretting hand, so it was difficult for him to play for long periods using false fingertips in standard tuning. It also helps the music sound "heavier" which was, and still IS, a major part of their sound.

Heard all the time growing up in music classes that "music has lots of math in it" but the only example they ever gave was strings making notes and being halved and such. Knowing how you use math to do the actual composing is far more interesting, and makes a lot of songs make more sense. Sabbath are unique. Their music has real character and magnifies the heaviness and yet so melodic it's frightening. Not many bands have the balls to create music of this ingenuity and craft. Great musicians who rocked my world 🌎.

For Metal Mondays you really must examine some UFO just a magnificent band and their 79 live album Strangers in the Night is up there if not above all those great 70’s live albums. So many tracks to choose from but would start with Rock Bottom. Michael Schenker’s virtuoso solo is a joy to behold. Envoy some UFO Doug…

Another example of the perfect rock or metal song, again featuring Ronnie James Dio. Not only was he the best rock and metal singer EVER, but he also brought out the best from whoever he worked with. Black Sanbath were at their peak with him (including as “Heaven and Hell”) and so were Rainbow. RIP, Ronnie.
