This was our first year doing Classical Conversations at the Foundations level. Here are my thoughts and observations on how the experience was overall. Have you heard about Classical Conversations or tried it with your family?

“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Galatians 6:9
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” Psalm 55:22
“I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.” Psalm 89:1
“And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Hannah Adams thanks Hannah! That was my goal; to be honest and not harsh. There were certainly things about CC we really enjoyed! 😊

Thank you for sharing your experience. We attended several meetings and visited two different CC communities to see if this would be a good fit for our family for next year and we came to some of the same conclusions you shared in your video. There can be a lot of disconnect from what is presented as how CC operates to actually seeing it and experiencing it. I don't think there was anything wrong with the review you shared. I thought it was well balanced, honest and fair.

Thank you! I was hoping to do that, be both honest and tactful. 😊

I'm also a mom of 4, ages 10-3 months 🤗 We are going into our 5th year with CC. I want to address a few of your concerns. Regarding the price, the tuition is actually very reasonable when considering other private schools. I recently priced a local private school and one month was the same price as a full year with CC!! Your second concern was regarding the Tutor's ability to teach and maintain order. As a Tutor with CC, it's my job to model to the parents what we are doing for the week. You, as the mother, are your child's teacher ❤ not the Tutor. Regarding the class itself, I would have voiced any concerns with your Director and had your son maybe move to a class with another boy. That would be very difficult for any little one. I understand the tiredness too, CC Community day is fun but very tiring 😁 CC isn't a fit for everyone and that's ok. The beauty of homeschooling is it's flexibility and diversity ❤

Foothills Family Thank you for your input! I agree; as someone who attended private school through high school, the price is substantially less. Unfortunately there was only one class in my sons age range, so switching wasn’t an option. I appreciate how CC has the parent as the primary teacher and leaves assignments to their discretion. One tutor we had was phenomenal. She was seasoned in tutoring, she emailed the parents every week with resources and reminders. She came prepared with games, activities, and incentives. In contrast the other tutor was brand new to CC and new to homeschooling in general. She did not have necessary items, mispronounced words, and presented the information in a monotone manner. (Not very motivating for my child) I expressed my concerns to our director and she spent time shadowing and helping the tutor improve over time. I agree that CC can be a great fit for some families. 😊👍

I appreciate the way you address your concerns and the gentleness you use in making your videos 🤗 I'm sorry there wasn't another class available. I tend to forget that not all CC Communities are the same! I hope my comments did not come across as harsh or disrespectful. That wasn't my intention at all ❤

Great to hear more about classical conversations...I’ve heard bits and pieces about it, but it was nice to hear a thorough explanation into what it is. 😊 My favourite thing about our co-op is the opportunity to learn from someone else, and to do things that I wouldn’t necessarily do with them, like certain science experiments and messy crafts. 😁

Mama to Four I agree; the extra things like experiments and music was super fun!

Just a few thoughts here as someone who has been in CC for 6 year and leadership for 4 years now. Disclaimer: I am a Foundations/Essentials Director. A better description of the Foundations program would be more like hanging pegs of information on a wall. Pegs for you to hang more indepth information later as they move into the next stage of learning. CC is different in the fact that it uses the Classical Education model. Most of us are unfamiliar and at times uncomfortable with it because it's so foreign to us because we were not educated that way. I wouldn't really describe it as a "overview" of information. If you stop at the Foundations level, you never really experience the depth and beauty that the program has to offer. Each level builds on the other. To see a Challenge student make a connection to his/her Foundations memory work, is amazing. It's like one of those light bulb moments. I have one going into Challenge II, who is entering the Rhetorical stage. All that hard work we put in during the Grammar and Dialectic stage is coming to fruition. I do think CC is a hard program to pop in and out of because it builds so much. As far as tutors go. There is actually much more training that goes into it than one 3 day training event. Tutors are required to meet with their director each week before CC to review the day's information and every 6 weeks for an all day planning and training session. Along with weekly prep work. Directors have even more training. I am actually leaving my family tomorrow for my second 3 day training event. Directors attend an ALL day training event each spring with their Support Representative, who has even more hours of training. Also keep in mind that directors do the best they can to hire the best tutors, however, they only have the parents who are willing to step up to choose from. Hiring the best tutors is one of the most challenging part of the job as a director. I personally have agonized and lost countless hours of sleep over this. Also lost a lot of sleep over how to extend grace to a tutor, who is struggling and may not be the best fit. It's a tough balance. CC is a community and these are our friends too. We want to encourage and equip. It really is like pastoring a little church. Give the first year mom a break. She was probably scared to death and extremely insecure. A director never likes to hire a first year mom, but sometimes it is necessary in order to provide enough classes for the demand. We hate to turn families away due to space issues. I just wanted to say these things, because I didn't feel like this was the complete picture of how much work really goes into running a quality CC program. I totally agree that it would be tough to commit to a year knowing you are moving. Tuition and fees can be transferred, but how much is really up to the directors. You can end up losing a little money. As far as cost, CC is very comparable to other "Cadillac" homeschool curriculums. Have you seen the cost of Sonlight full scale curriculums per student? Or even Abeka? Even with a family of 7 children with #8 on the way, I find it one of the more economical quality programs out there. It is truly college prep and I feel like has very little gaps. They will be prepared for college. AND, you can always tutor or direct to help cover the costs. I do think you would have made more connections by staying for lunch. That is the time set aside for connecting with other parents on a CC day. When I have a Foundations only mom, who isn't connecting, she is almost never staying for lunch. Part of what makes CC so unique is the community aspect. These are my people. The people we do life with. It's an amazing gift as a director to see the behind the scenes acts of community. Meals made for one another in hard times, financial blessings to other families, sometimes full tuition covered, mamas walking the halls with other mamas fussy babies, kids helping tutors set up, tutors covering areas for a director who is sick or just had a baby, families holding each other accountable. I could go on and on, but I have written enough. I will say that I am not so naive that I don't know CC isn't for everyone. It isn't. I just like to see reviews from people who really understand the program and how it works. Too often, bad reviews come from people who have no clue or refused to attend the equipping events and meetings that were asked of them. Just because there is a tuition, doesn't mean that parents get to check out. You are paying for the leadership, training, and equipping that you the parent are receiving. Maybe when you get settled and your kids are a little older, you could give it another go. Blessings!

Laura Hamby,I love your comment. You explain this so very well. I'm a 3 year CC mom, 2 year Foundations tutor, and will be tutoring Essentials next fall. Our first year was overwhelming but I kept on going. I gave our community a chance and stayed for lunch LOL. Community is so important. We've made so many friends along the way. 😊

Mrs. Mom Thanks so much 💕 I’ve had to take a break from RU-vid to focus on Baby J’s health. I hope to come back once we’re confident he’s on the path to wellness. I’m still posting occasionally on my Instagram account. 😊
