David Phelps is unfortunately not my cup of tea. I know he has a very good voice, but every time I hear him I'm just not moved. He has so many fans that every now and then I give him another try but, nope. Not for me 🤷
He won't be for everyone! This is the only performance I've heard of his so far - I plan on getting round to some more in the future to see how they compare to this
"O Holy Night" is David's favorite Christmas song. David's vocal chords are baritone size, that's how he sings so high and still so powerful, never straining to reach the higher notes. You would enjoy listening to more of David's music. He's still powerful at the age of 54.
The pianist, Anthony Burger-quite a story, worth a look up. He had severe burns to his hands as a baby, told he’d never have full use, was a touring pro by 15. One of a kind, died young of a sudden heart attack, but left quite the legacy.
David Phelps … using typical ‘British’ adjectives..Disgusting…Nasty…Ridiculous…Insane…with a Massive voice! 😅 We love him! I saw him earlier this year in IN. Legendary!!! But this rendition of Oh Holy Night is only 10 yrs old people. So glad you all have finally caught up! Merry CHRISTmäs and HäPpÿ New Year! 👑🎶🥁💜🌟
Thank you for reacting to David Phelps. Check out his cover of Whitney Houston’s “ I have nothing.” I believe he was 52 years old at the time of that recording.
David is the best male vocalist on the planet and has been for the past twenty five years. I know...I have seen him in concert from the front row 11 times now, met him multiple times, met his family including his parents and have been to two concerts at his home (Barn Bash events). He is amazingly humble and gracious despite his immense talent.
I love that the person requesting this mentions that he has 2 favorite singers… David Phelps and Mitch Grassi - which is my favorite singer! This performance was nuts! I have heard David Phelps perform before and he has a voice that just doesn’t stop! So good!
The people on the stage are mostly accomplished singers themselves. All admire David's talent. Mark Lowry who wrote, "Mary Did You Know" is right behind David in the maroon shirt.
Oh how I loved this reaction! You seemed to be blinking back tears with a lump in your throat while biting your bottom lip. That’s my reaction EVERY time I watch or listen to this stellar performance. All of David’s music does that to me. I don’t go to church but find myself worshipping my Lord and Savior with every second of every song. Check out No More Night, The End of The Beginning, and He’s Alive … you’ll once again fight back tears. Much love ❤️
Those three songs recommended in this comment were the first 3 songs of his that came to my mind as well after your reaction. He's Alive is a wonderful Easter song. I just about to suffocate myself in one of his performances of that song. Holds a note about 18 or 19 seconds . Crazy!!! He's blessed and moreover... anointed
Great reaction. Those of us who have learned about David over the years never cease to be amazed of his vocal abilities. He is in his early 50's now and is better than ever. His voice is golden
Like many others here, I’ve heard David live, and met him. He’s entirely humble, funny, and gracious. He is my favorite male singer, period. To me, what sets him apart is that he believes every word that he sings. God gave him a world-class gift that he has in turn given back to God. I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but Anthony Burger died in his 40’s from an aortic dissection while playing. An enormous loss…
HI Alan, Many of your comments here are those of my own. I too met David, and he was soooo very humble and you can see it on the end of this video. Terrible loss losing Anthony's talent. There will never be another.
The first time I heard David sing this, I was in bed. It was so moving that I jumped up with my hands raised high. I think this is the best rendition of Oh, Holy Night ever.
You should research Bill and Gloria Gaither. They wrote Church holiday Cantatas in the 70's and 80's then an older Southern Gospel singer died and many of the older Southern singers attended the funeral. Bill owned a studio in Nashville and had all of the older singers to come to his studio to sing and reminisce. Southern Gospel was no longer popular but Bill videoed the studio session and decided to release it. It was a massive success and he gathered more of the older Gospel singers for another session. He has now sold these numbers of videos an CD's "He's sold more than 20 million copies of his nearly 50 albums, and 18 million videos and DVDs from his hugely popular in-concert Homecoming series." He then gathered the best of the singers and began world tours which lasted for years. Many of those singers became millionaires from all of the music Bill produced. It all became an international success as they traveled from places like Birmingham, Alabama, in this video, to Israel, to Australia and around the world. Sadly, Anthony Berger died many years ago and was a great loss to the group.
Anthony Burger was a great loss. I believe he was just 41 when he passed away from a heart attack at the piano during a concert on a Gaither Cruise. Anthony Burger was a classically trained pianist and, interestingly, he had a terrible accident and burned both hands when he was a child. The doctors said that he would never move his fingers again, but guess what they were wrong. I appreciate your explanation and going into detail. I'm a music student myself and I really learn a lot from the different people that I watch react to the songs. Your reaction was very interesting. I wondered if you would be blown away by David Phelps and Anthony Burger such as so many of the Phelps Phans,as we call ourselves are. Thank you, for your reaction. I loved it. Also,David got his degree at Baylor University in Texas. He is not just a fabulous tenor but is also a composer, arranger and lyricist. Listen to him sing Nessun Dorma. He's also doing solo tours now and 2 years ago recorded Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing. He "Phelpsed" it and put a little twist to keep us on our toes but you'll LOVE it.
It's just so much fun to watch reaction videos to my favorite performance by my favorite all-time singer. At 6:14, I'm thinking "just you wait! You're about to be shocked and awed by what that voice can do!" By the way, I LOVE the way he moved you toward the end. THAT same savior that he sings about can be your Savior too! Just ask Him into your heart. 🕊🕊🕊
Lovely reaction. The hands raised in the air is a mannerism of worship like the folding of hands for prayer. It is common in some Christian denominations, particularly in the south of the U.S. The people are in worship to God, led by the song and the incredible vocal. With David, and Anthony, they are testifying to their belief and love of the Savior...the song becomes their vehicle of praise and the raised hands signify such. David Phelps is an absolute vocal beast who sings his faith triumphantly.
Yes, and it's not only Scriptural, but is also referenced in ancient inscriptions. "What's the purpose of lifted hands? For some, it's a sign of surrender to God. It may be an act of adoration and praise. Or, it can be a visible expression of our dependence, like a young child who lifts up hands to a mother or father." (from Grace Church)
So I thought since you had so much appreciation for Anthony Burger, then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND his live version of Exodus. No singing but an up close and personal of Anthony Burger's talent for you viewing and listening pleasure. I'm not sure if you'll react or feel the need to as so many people tune in to hear vocals. But you definitely must watch him in that performance. I hadnt seen it but I came across it this evening. It literally took my breath... LITERALLY TOOK MY BREATH for about 8 or 10 seconds I could not breathe ( no joke), goosebumps, and tears.
Please consider doing a reaction to a song David wrote in recent years called ‘Just As I Am.” Such an unusual song and the artistry of the arrangement and his singing is stunning.
Anthony Berger is the pianist. Gospel music was his forte. Unfortunately, he passed away leaving a performance at at young age, 40's. A very great loss. If I'm not mistaken, this is a "Homecoming" concert ( you could go down that rabbit hole) by Bill Gaither ie. The Gaither Vocal Band.
Both my children listened to the Gaither Vocal Band songs for children on cassette tapes in the late 80's and 90's. They are in their mid-thirties now. I sang gospel. There were/are some unbelievably great artists and musicians in the Gospel world. David certainly is a standout! He has made some thought provoking contemporary music fairly recently too. Thank you Sir Hairless featuring David. He deserves recognition.
This was from a recording of a Gaither Christmas Homecoming concert. Bill Gaither has been promoting Southern Gospel music for decades and brings his “Homecoming Friends“ (well-known artists from the Southern Gospel community) with him for his concerts.
I’ve seen this video 20-30+ times, and the reaction I saw in your eyes on that high note before the choir joined in, is my reaction every single time I watch!! Great reaction!🥹
Great reactions. I really appreciate your insights. In this same vein, you should check out the video, "Wintley Phipps Amazing Grace on the black notes." He gives an interesting history/music lesson followed by an utterly breathtaking performance. David Phelps is also on stage watching. 😊
Those hands raised are a sign of praise - yes, this is a moving performance which adds to the experience but with these folks they are praising the Lord! My favorite rendition of this carol for sure!
It is a TOSS-UP between David Phelps and Austin Brown .... as to is best High Tenor .... both are outrageously talented IN THE UPPER RANGE .... David has power and likes to show it ..... Austin is not as robust, perhaps light in the lower register BUT, HIS INCREDIBLE SWEET & WONDERFUL VIBRATO AND NATURAL DELIVERY ( instead of push in upper notes) is what I am attracted to. Either would win a contest ... as criteria aside THEY ARE GIFTED BEYOND those you could ever find ! GBjj
Time for you to do a reaction to Lara Fabian Adagio live. It’s an older orchestral live performance. One of the best female lead vocals on earth. She also wrote broken vow. Easy to find. Probably has 20+ million views. Most reaction videos try and do an Adagio reaction without your musical knowledge. Often compared to Celine Dion, funnily enough similar backgrounds and grew up a stones throw away from each other. I think Lara is more technical though hence an even more emotive singer. Your thoughts on it would really interest me. Kind regards. Nicholas from Sydney.
Another breath taking song for Christmas is David singing O Come O Come Immanuel medley. The beginning takes my breath away and I barely get it back until the whole medley is over. Just imo! Thank you for this reaction. P. S. I came back and have watched your reaction numerous times. My feelings exactly.
O Holy Night is too my favorite Christmas hymn. David was a member of the Gaither Vocal Band for years, which is a gospel quartet. This is one of the many Gaither Homecoming concerts in which many gospel singers participate in. All the people on the stage were gospel singers at on time or another. The raising of hands and lifting arms are gestures of worship and praise to God, as was the prolonged period of applause at the end of the song. The praise to God for the Gift of His Son is what Christmas is all about and also the gift of being able to listen and sing the beautiful music that is of itself a gift.
There is no shame in not knowing who David Phelps is before now. But now you know. I love watching people hear this for the first time. What makes this so incredibly moving is the talent, both David and Anthony, and their love of Jesus. Christ lives in their hearts and is the foundation of the Spirit that underpins this worship experience.
If you pause at about 8:22, the man seen just behind David's right shoulder wearing a red shirt, is Mark Lowry, the writer of "Mary Did You Know?", which is just fascinating to me since I really mostly knew him as a Christian comedian growing up.
Hi SH, thank you so much for reacting to this song by David and Anthony 👍 . My favorite Christmas song and this is the best rendition ever for me. I somehow always cry a river when hearing this. David Phelps stands firmly in my top 3 vocalists of all time, together with Dimash and Freddy. Hi & thanks from the Netherlands 🧡
That really was a long time ago with Anthony Burger on the piano and is or rather was a BEAST on the piano as Phelps is vocally.... Love them both, sorry that Anthony is no longer with us but David still does stellar performances and is just wicked Savage! Usually it's gonna be black gospel where you'll hear exaggerated runs and embellishments but with Phelps, he never goes overboard..💯❤️
One of my favorite pastimes as Christmas approaches is watching "reaction" videos to David Phelps singing O Holy Night. I especially appreciate yours, Sir Hairless, because you go beyond just saying "Wow!" by adding intelligent commentary. Thank you for that.
Anthony Burger was the best of the best!!! Such a gifted pianist!!! Look up his story about how he got his hands burned as a child!! And David Phelps?!!! Nothing to say but stand in awe!!! So gifted as well!!! Anthony Burger played for him many many times!!! But Anthony is in Heaven now!!
The gentleman behind him in the red shirt and black coat is his good friend Mark Lowery who wrote the song Mary Did You Know. If you only knew how many of the people that joined in at the end are some of the most amazing singers and song writers also
@@SirHairless The people singing behind him is literally a who's who in the gospel music world. David is phenomenal. He sings with his daughters, but mostly Maggie Beth and wow but the apple definitely did not fall far from the tree! You cannot go wrong with a David Phelps song. He is an amazing singer, arranger and composer. An amazing trifecta for sure.
Please react to more of David Phelps: No More Night End Of The Beginning We Shall Behold Him He’s Alive Let Freedom Ring (With the Gaither Vocal Band live from Carnegie Hall) Just As I Am Star Spangled Banner
A lot of people behind him are well known Christian singers. If you notice the guy behind him when David hits the high notes and he bends down and pops back up is Mark Lowry. He wrote “Mary Did You Know” very popular Christian song. This guy is so awesome. Love your reaction. Thank you!❤
David Phelps has been my favorite vocalist for a very long time and I enjoy watching people review his performances on RU-vid, especially this performance. I have to say that you have the best and most organized analysis of his video I have seen to date. I enjoyed your in-depth and expert evaluation.
Anthony Burger is the most wonderful pianist I have ever heard and listen to his concerts a lot! Unfortunately, he passed away in 2006 while performing on a Gaither cruise. He was in his 40’s.
This is also my favorite Christmas song. Maybe I'm strange here, but I prefer to hear a female singer on this, I can't say why just my preference. But David Phelps is one of just a few men I enjoy listening to on this song. Home Free also has a wonderful male performance. And for me to say a male performance is wonderful, it is equal or better than this performance. If this is your favorite, you really need to look it up. Also I don't usually recommend Home Free, they are good, just not my style.
I never heard of him either. Has he always sung classically? Glad to have done so now. Thanks for taking the recommendations to review him. I appreciate your comments about the singers ranges and chords. I've never had formal training.
There is no one better than David Phelps. The pace at which he sings a song is what makes David’s singing so beautiful. I am not a musician, I only know what I love and what I don’t. I love David Phelps.
Great to hear. This is a performance that is capable of really moving everyone - whether they're musical or not, religious or not, this-and-that or not, etc etc 🙌
Not embarrassed at all, but like the rest of us, now privileged to hear such a legend lay down one for the books alongside a total hero of a pianists 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The raising of their hands was more than an acknowledgment of the gifted David Phelps. It was giving glory to the gift giver- God the Father! Praise Jesus!
Thanks! My Christmas schedule is all booked out for this year but I can check it out - I've received a few other comments about him so the name has caught my eye for sure 👀
Love David Phelps even if it’s August and over ninety. Love your reaction and input. David Phelps is extraordinary. Anthony Burger was one of a kind. He died while playing the piano on a Gaither Homecoming Cruise. His story is remarkable. Some other songs you might consider: Let Freedom Ring I Believe in a Hill Called Mt Calvary No More Night Battle Hymn of the Republic Or look up David Phelp’s highest notes.
No one to touch MORISSETTE AMON LAMARS performance at her FAVOR CHURCH Christian community concert on Christmas Eve 2020 with a Christian rock band and she's self trained, she didn't only sing it she was worshipping it 🇬🇧🔥👌❤️.
In February 2024 David will be singing in concert with the cast of Stephen Schwartz' "Children of Eden" at the Lincoln Center in New York. Just recently he performed at the Metropolitan in New York for Stephen Schwartz' 75th birthday celebration. Schwartz has said that David is his favorite singer.
If you want to see some of the most impressive singing please watch LUCY & MARTHA THOMAS - O Holy Night then The Prayer then Lucy Thomas sing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas also HALLELUJAH , Evergreen and then At Last and La Vie En Rose you will not regret it Enjoy
