The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life. curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.

My great grandfather (a music teacher who spoke seven languages from Verona Italy) toured America as his (Caruso) accompianist (piano). We have letters he wrote home where talks about the performances and how amazed he was. I have pictures of him (Caruso) at our family farm, everyone eating and drinking out doors. So cool.

In this song Enrico Caruso is dying. He is with the woman he loves, and they both know their time together is coming to an end. He does not want to leave her, but his death is inevitable. All he can do is tell her how much he loves her, as she looks into his eyes. It's heartbreaking. Lara is aware of this and she feels and portrays the true depth of emotion.

The story behind the song: Caruso had a very difficult and rather unhappy life. He was born to a poor family in Naples and had many challenges and problems with Italian opera houses. Also his wife left him for another man, so he migrated to America and gained fame and success in it, which the song mentions (the nights in America). A few years before his death, he met a young woman and fell deeply in love with her. Dalla had the occasion to stay at the same hotel “Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento” where Caruso, the tenor, passed his last nights. Caruso was ill with throat cancer, but that didn’t prevent him from giving singing lessons to a young women with whom he fell deeply in love. Controversially, the song simply tells about the pain and longings of a man who is about to die while he is looking into the eyes of a girl who was very dear to him. Caruso opera song is most probably a way of romanticizing Enrico Caruso’s last days. It narrates the drama of Caruso’s last concert: “It was a hot night and he would not give up singing for her looking at him with admiration, so he brought the piano to the terrace overlooking the port and began to sing a passionate declaration of love and suffering. His voice was strong and the fishermen, hearing, returned to port and remained anchored on the terrace. The lights of the boats were so many that looked like stars … Caruso did not lose the strength and continued singing sinking in the most beautiful green eyes of the girl leaning against the piano. That night his condition worsened. Two days later, on August 2, 1921, Caruso died in Naples. This song narrates the drama of that night, with lights and shadows of the past… with death and life… a sick man who looks in the eyes of the girl a future that no longer exists… a testament of love, a declaration of love… This was his last concert, and had the most exceptional public … the sea, the stars in the sky, fishermen, the lights of the boats, and his beloved girl… “ From: www.chosic.com/caruso-luciano-pavarotti/

Caruso, is an italian song, written, composed and performed in 1986 by Lucio Dalla as a tribute to Enrico Caruso, the most famous tenor of his time (late 19th / early 20th century). He was the first global singing superstar. The story is about the last days of Enrico Caruso, he knows he is dying, and he is remembering all his career on stage and telling his much younger wife how much he loves her. It has very quickly become a classic of italia music and the biggest names have covered it (Julio Iglesias, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, …. and of course Luciano Pavarotti). But for many, Lara's version is the best ever, as she was able, with her unique ability to convey the emotions of a song, to reveal the real sad story written by Lucio Dalla. I was told that Lucio Dalla himself, after hearing this performance, said that she made it her song and this is the best version he has heard from it. For Lara, this song is really important as this is a kind of anthem for Italy, and she is so much connected to this country. She spent the first few years of her life there with her sicilian mother and grandma. Her husband is also sicilian.

as was noted, "Caruso" was written to honor Enrico Caruso, the great Italian tenor who died young, shortly after his daughter was born.....this piece imagines Caruso's last words to his wife and his daughter........"Te voglio bene assai' (I love you very much)....originally written for a male tenor, all the great (and near great) male and female operatic performers have sung this piece

Definitely the "rock star" side of her. Requiem Por un Fou: Johnny Hallyday's signature piece broken into two voices for Fabian. Full orchestra, full choir, stadium crowd, rain, symphonic rock. i just saw this video of yours for the first time. being a sincere lover of Dallo's Caruso, i was eventually pointed to your video. and i'm grateful for that! i appreciate your take and your comments on Lara Fabian's rendition of Caruso. these are emotional times and when we watch emotional beautiful songs, it often helps to spill our hearts and wash away many things. i felt your heartfelt reactions to Lara Fabian's Caruso. she is truly amazing and i applaud your appreciation of her. at the end of your video. you said that you follow all your videos with "to know that each and every day is that you are special. You can accomplish your dreams and you are loved." you know, i don't know you and i just finished watching the most heart rendering rendition of Caruso, so i get it that i feel sad. understandably. but your ending the video with those words meant so much to me and helped me immensely. thank you. i'm sorry you got covid. how are you doing? you have a wonderful platform and i wish you well.

This girl..What an unusual career. Almost nothing on time. But she will get more and more respected as the time passes by and maybe even more after she passes away. Underrated for a long time, mistreated by the French media as a beginner but mostly in the USA, not permitted to enter the music market there and rejected by the Sony Music because they had to ..support Celine Dion etc. She has survived from many difficulties like cancer, heart attack, problems with her voice, loss of a baby etc and of course many love stories. She is happy at last, but living in Canada. I can understand she had to show her grattitude to a country that welcomed her and supported her to start her career, however I don't understand what the hell is she doing there so many years, far away from her parents and her birthplace and birthplace of her husband. As if Canadians are angels and French people are criminals. If I was Lara I suppose I would live the rest of my life in Paris, after the incredible love I had received in the Paris 2001 concert. A concert that changed her way of facing life and saved her from the suicidal thoughts she was struggling with when she left the USA tragedy. For me it is by far the concert of her life and you should present it as a whole. Because she lived a whole life on the scene that night. I never saw her so deeply desparate and so extremely happy. Try it. I thing it is also available in 6 parts. I run into you just a few minutes ago. Like I did with Lara a year ago when I run into her "je t'aime" (Paris 2001) and became a slave who doesn't want his freedom back. I am ok with you man. Like, subscribe and comment. I suppose this is enough. Huggs, Greece

I'm glad you mention the pianist in this case. He really need to be in a kind of symbiosis with the singer. Follow the dynamic and tempo and so on. It is hard to put words on emotion but to perform like this you need to be in a mental state and in contact with your emotions to be able to let them out. One thing that is easy to forget is that the mental tonelevel isn't static. Every day life effects us so to enter the stage and really connect to the audience has a lot to do with that you want to connect with them. The intention and the effort to reach out is definitely a factor too. It also craves guts. Many artists have more of a "look at me" attitude and that shines through because it will be a different flow. It's more admiration for the artist then to be a part of a history and their emotions. Nothing wrong with admiration but if that's the only thing an artist want to achieve it falls flat for me. Just my humble opinion. Keep up the good work!

Same with Giulia Falcone who is apparently prerecording her pianoplay if she is not directly playing while singing. She is italian and did at 12 also a remarkable cover of caruso, to which I would like to invite you to have a look at. She did also a cover of Laras Versions of “je suis malade”, and “adagio” , I guess she is also very in favor of Lara which makes sense since they have a similar approach to music. Please have a look ru-vid.com/group/PLGr5gGwU548HLO9pRU32piV5OTSu062JL

Hi Josh. I enjoy your reactions. Glad you are better! There is a ton more away from Lara's fantastic 1999 from Lara with Love concert. I recommend you try a number from her Un Regard 9 concert (2006). It is called "I guess I loved you". It is just Lara sitting on a piano, accompanied by Manu Pitois. I think It illustrates, the purity of her voice and again, her signature expressiveness. I think you would appreciate it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q13zh3lQU5U.html

You simply MUST see her Yentl Medley from 1997. It’s not to be believed. Simply extraordinary. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe this performance. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zW8lalHMwxk.html
