So happy to see you back!! Love your videos-always! I’m reading the Three Musketeers currently. Always love Dumas! Recently read the Artificial Silk Girl and Lady Susan. All good. I have a bunch upcoming to round out Victober. ❤

Loved your discussion of Summer and Wharton's writing. If you ever have the chance to visit The Mount, the home Wharton designed and built for herself in 1901 here in Massachusetts, it's worth the visit! -Les

Loved this! I’m almost convinced Summer will be my way into Edith Wharton, not The Age of Innocence which I have on my shelf. I read The Waves last month and not quiet ready for another Woolf I think, but I think I might fall in love with To the Lighthouse when I get to it.

I agree with you that To the Lighthouse is one of the best novel ever written in English language! I read more than half of the book last year but it made so sad that I never had the mood since then to pick it up and finish it.

Great video. Nice to hear from you. I'm a big fan of Hardy. Casterbridge is one of my faves. What you say it very true. One scene I love is that scene near the beginning when the poor are watching the rich eat and drink through the window. It's almost like a theatrical performance. Haven't read Wharton at all. You're right, I need to read Strachey.

I also just read Summer last month and loved it. It was my first Edith Wharton and I can't wait to read more.

M of C was the first Hardy novel I picked up and I had a good time with it. J the O, Tess, and Return of the Native are better novels, but the portrayal of Elizabeth stands out for me. She is the only Hardy character I'm aware of who understands life rarely ends well, with a lot of unhappiness along the way. Right now I'm two thirds through Bleak House by Dickens. Not as much fun as Great Expectations or David Copperfield, but the novel creates a stifling, urban atmosphere that is very impressive. The London of BH is a phantasmagoric nightmare.

I haven't read any new classics this year, unless you count individual poems, but I've reread a few od my favorites. I reread Pride and prejudice for the second year in a row ( I loved it so much that I've decided to reread it every year) and that was an amazing experience. I also reread I capture the castle and Anne of the Island.

Hello Lucy. 🙂 Very interesting video, thank you. As it happens To The Lighthouse is on The Pile at the moment, thanks to the local charity shop. I was thinking of it as potential light relief since there are a couple of real heavyweights in the offing - but maybe not.

Yes, maybe not a light relief sort of read! An amazing read but one that is quite subtle in its heaviness. It hits you all at once and really makes you think! I think it's a book that finds you at just the right time. Hope you enjoy it nevertheless whenever you read it! It's brilliant.

I was confused reading Olivia, I'm still not convinced it isn't completely autobiographical. I liked it though!

Hi Lucy...I love reading Classics..I was watching the 2018 Film Lizzie on Lizzie Borden and Kristen Stewart played a good Irish Housemaid as Bridget Sullivan.

I didn't realise there had been a Lizzie Borden film! I listened to Lucy Worsley's Lady Killers podcast episode on her - would recommend. It was very good!

I've been to his birthplace - but would love to visit Max Gate soon. It's been on the must-visit list for a few years but I haven't got round to it yet. So glad you enjoyed your visits!
