Lesson Overview:
This instructional video is designed for teachers to guide their students in creating symmetrical masks using recycled cardboard and basic art supplies. The lesson integrates art and geometry, focusing on symmetry and shape recognition. Students can complete with a variety of methods from crayon rubbings to printmaking.
Materials Needed:
- Recycled cardboard
- Scissors
- Glue (liquid or stick)
- Various coloring materials (crayons, markers, gel pens, or sharpies)
Lesson Steps:
1. *Introduction to Shapes [0:06-0:22]:* Discuss various geometric shapes like circles, triangles, lines, zigzag, and straight lines. Emphasize the use of different sizes, starting with larger shapes for the mask's base.
2. *Organizing Shapes [0:33-0:38]:* Have students sort their shapes by size and type. This organization will aid in the design process.
3. *Mask Shape Design [0:43-0:55]:* Instruct students to decide on their mask's overall shape, using a piece of cardboard as a template.
4. *Arranging Shapes for Symmetry [1:08-1:32]:* Guide students to arrange their shapes on the mask outline, focusing on creating symmetry. This step reinforces the concept of symmetry (the same on both sides).
5. *Gluing the Shapes [1:41-1:57]:* Teach students to glue their shapes onto the mask. Highlight the importance of using minimal glue to avoid messes.
6. *Self-Reflection and Review [2:01-2:24]:* Encourage students to reflect on their work, checking for symmetry, variety in shapes, and adherence to the project objectives.
7. *Adding Details [2:35-2:41]:* Once the basic mask is complete, allow students to add more details, overlapping shapes, and lines for a more intricate design.
8. *Finalizing the Mask [2:45-2:50]:* Instruct students to cut the outer edge of their masks to form a complete shape.
9. *Mask Rubbing and Decoration [2:59-3:26]:* Demonstrate how to create a rubbing of the mask with crayons, and then use markers, gel pens, or sharpies to add further details and patterns.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand and apply the concept of symmetry.
- Recognize and use various geometric shapes.
- Develop fine motor skills through cutting, arranging, and gluing.
- Encourage creativity and individual expression in art.
This lesson plan is perfect for integrating art and geometry in a classroom setting, providing a hands-on approach to learning while fostering creativity and self-expression among students.
Self-reflect... did I
Cut arrange and glue?
Create a mask with symmetry?
Use various geometric shapes in my
design?
