Classroom Management Techniques for ANY GRADE // In this video I describe my culture shock entering elementary classrooms for the first time since I was in 5th grade, and how the three SIMPLEST behavior management techniques work to engage students from TK all the way through 12th grade! And all without making you feel like teacher roadkill… could it get any better??

I almost cried today after a seriously difficult grade5 class. I'm an art teacher, but in our system (California) the students only see Art once per week for 40 minutes, which makes relationship building hard - to say the least. I searched in yt and found your video, and I'm grateful for your instruction :) Keep making videos; I'm only 2nd year and sometimes that classroom management monster seeks to devour me :) God bless, keep it up.

I hear ya. I'm an art teacher and older grades are the worst. After ten years, I no longer cry, I just get mad! Not that that's healthy either

Oh my goodness so glad I saw this as the first comment. I am a first year art teacher, but I went the alt certification rout. 6th grade with no classroom management classes, and I see my kids only once or twice a week for 50 mins. Almost 30 of them in each class. It’s a lot.

Hey!!! Don’t get discouraged! I’m in the same boat and have been since 2010, only have my students 20-30 min a week, sometimes only once month. What helped me a lot is taking an extra 5-10 mins on day 1 to go over what I expect each time we are together in class. I used to think I didn’t have enough time to take that much away from my first day of class but trust me, you will have way more than 10 minutes wasted throughout the year if you don’t take that time! I usually ask them over and over all year, show me you’re ready for class. So from day 1 I tell them, this is how you show me you are ready for class: 1. You are at your desk, on the floor, where ever your day begins. 2. You’re hands are_____ 3. Your eyes are ______ 4. You’re ears are on. And of course you can modify those to fit your needs & age level. Then all year they know when I say “show me you’re ready” or I say “look at Billy, he looks ready for class, sitting in his seat, his hands in his lap, his eyes on me. Thank you Billy. The rest of them tent to fall in line shortly after with little effort.

Returning to public school after 14 years teaching adults! These are great reminders! I remember long ago turning lights off when I needed to give a quick shock to their system. I would shut off the lights and announce firmly but quietly... "heads down, mouths quiet" (5th graders) and the room was silent. They would quite down immediately! I would let them rest in that quiet space for about a minute before starting the next task. By then their adrenaline had calmed down and we could begin again. Another tip is to project a timer on the screen with a buzzer so they can self regulate their voices when the timer goes off.

I love your second tip, and will probably use it. The first seems chancy in my experience: Sometimes it rewards them and gets them more excited. Perhaps I've done it with the wrong groups, or otherwise not as skillfully as you. Best wishes in your return.

Wow...your video is just the boost i needed today. I am a substitute teacher and today I had a 5th grade classroom that was like you said unruly and I found myself raising my voice I found myself I'm calling out specific students over and over and over again knowing that nothing was really getting done if I needed it too and I left today for the Gregs Austin and feeling defeated by a group of 5th graders two or three specifically and I decided to do some research and I found your video and the simple things that we we learned years ago back to the basics is exactly what I needed to hear and I'm sure that when I'm back in the classroom I'm actually stopping for this room again on Thursday and I'm sure that these techniques will be fantastic so thank you very much for reminding me I'm enjoying your caffeinated classroom.

I'm about to start substitute teaching in the fall so this advice is GOLDEN! I'm also taking my first class towards my single subject credential after earning a BS in Marine Bio so I'm pretty new to the formal education field. I’ve just started subbing and your story at 4:50 is too real. Made that error a few times. Lol. I did my practicum with high schoolers and that meant they had no energy and I had to bring it all, but it’s quite a gear shift for the young ones.

YES!! I teach PREschool - Middle school TRAVELING PE CLASSES and we get 20-30 minutes to get things accomplished! I totally agree that rapport & personality makes a HUGE difference! GREAT TIPS!!

BTW-Your 3 strategies work with middle school but you also need added tactics. My top 3 after your top 3: 1. Bribe with Jolly Rancher, 2. Award whole class when they stop chit chat. 3. Use "bonus sheets" for kiddos having a bad day or 2 or 3 (i.e. they live tatoo coloring art, crossword, word search, how to draw anime). Last resort, send from room. The last resort is only after your 3 and my 3. At that point, the whole class is ready to have them leave. 🎉

I have been teaching ESL in a training school for the past 10 years and now going to an International school to cover for a teacher who is locked out of China. Totally different ballgame and totally looking forward to it. I’m a first-year teacher. I’m always doing the first two things you have mentioned. I have shhhhhh several times but never whisper. I’ll try that definitely. I teach high school math. I guess students are more likely to act up when they feel hopeless in math....

This was helpful. I’ve always taught college and high school. Then taught middle school: didn’t love it, but it’s fine. This year, post covid, 6th grade is unbearable. I don’t like little kids and that’s what they are, behaviorally. They take 12.5 % of my day, and about 70% of my energy. I hope these this help 🥺

great video, I am a high school teacher in Australia, returning back to work very soon after having 8 years away from the classroom for my 4 beautiful babies, I am a big believer in all of your 3 strategies here, proximity for me is a huge one, I would love to hear your thoughts on how you deal with more severe behaviours in your classroom, do you use a break system, get kids to fill in a behaviour reflection sheet that sort of thing ? Also a new subscriber here, I am loving your classroom set up by the way tfs

I am currently doing research for substitute teachers for a module on classroom management and came across your you tube video and will use your information for my module and site my resource of course. I work with 10-12 year olds. I take teams of these kids (13-16 of them) through Space Camp. It is hard to yell all the time or talk in a high volume, cuz my voice is raspy. The less I would have to do it, the better. I am gonna try the waiting and whispering technique. My best friend told me that clapping a little rhythm works too, when I want their attention. Always down for tips. Thank you.

I also work as a peripatetic - I only see my kids one hour a week and it's always a fight with my older students. No established relationship makes everything harder.

In my experience, I've seen classroom 'management' weaponized against shy, disabled, or minority students by which the teacher antagonizes them or delegates verbal abuse to the classroom bully to do it on her behalf to the marginalized student. They gaslight the student for the sole purpose of provoking them so they can punish them and then blame them for it.

Non Verbals are great!!! No child wants to hear. Their name call often for redirection. Putting your finger on your lip, in comparison to telling a child to be quiet can be very impactful.
