Congratu lations! I taught for approx 35+ years, retired now, miss it everyday still. Enjoy it, the time passes quicker that you can possibly imagine. The best advice I can give is "Don't sweat the small stuff". Keep yourself as organized as possible and treasure every success you have!

When I taught 5th grade, I had " I Survived..." books. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Because of Winn-Dixie, Bridge to Terabithia, Wonder, Esperanza Rising( That was part of our curriculum.,), Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Hatchet , Call of the Wild, Number the Stars. They may also like Harry Potter. I hope that helps.

The greatest gift you can give those kids kids love and support . Make a box where on Wednesday everyone puts something there struggling with or might need . Kids now a day have it so tuff!! Then have open discussions on say Friday

A great way to get books is to go to tag sales and places like goodwill, savers, big lots (overstock stores, or marsden (a chain that sells inexpensive materials).

Set up an account with Scholastic book clubs. Send home flyers every month to earn points. You can use points to get books. You can also start a class wishlist.

Often times, I would use a section of my board to write the students' assignments in sequence, like a To Do List. Then they could always look at it, especially if they didn't listen to me the first time. That way, you're helping them to be successful and manage their time. Also, it teaches them accountability and responsibility for their own learning.,

I have seen from other teachers on TPT: MUSTard- work they have to do; Ketchup-work they need to finish,; and PICKles-work/ activities they may choose.

For 5th graders, I might have a 1 boy and 1 girl at a time policy. Some girls start their time of the month in 5th grade. I know I did. It would be awful if they had an accident waiting for a boy who's taking his time in the hall. Just a suggestion.

You really don’t need wall space when you have all those cabinets for hanging resources. Great space!!
