Cormier won an international design competition to create a landscape across a small waterway from a sugar terminal. The site, Cormier said, was “full of sugar mist.” Channeling George Seurat’s images from “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grand Jatte” and “Bathers at Asnières,” he created a sandy beach with the commercial terminal as a backdrop. The site is dotted with permanent bright pink umbrellas, rocky outcrops with supersized candy stripes in red and white, and a central pedestrian walkway.
