We actually do see Claudette as an adult, though not in her tome. She is described in Mikaela's tome, Memory 1310: "Something about the woman keeps others at a distance. Maybe it’s her intensity. Maybe it’s her detachment. Her otherworldliness. Even in this dark, dangerous place, she seems more connected to the flora. To the trees. The shrubs. The night blooming flowers. The climbing vines. The crickets chirping their night song. The moths drawn to the tiny pockets of light that penetrate the heavy black fog. The rats scurrying through the brush. She can sit for hours watching a spider spin its web. That’s what holds her interest. The living things that somehow continue to thrive in this grim and wicked place. She can’t read people the way others can. She can’t look at someone’s face and understand what they’re feeling. The language of human emotion is indecipherable. Her kind, intelligent eyes are framed by big plastic glasses. Her complexion is dark. Her jet black hair a soft, beautiful cloud of tightly coiled curls and braids. She moves through the dark mist and her skin prickles with fear. There are dangers in this place. Predators. Monsters. The stench of death. The sickly sweet aroma of rotten flesh. The air is damp. Cold. The crickets suddenly stop chirping. The abrupt silence stops her in her tracks. She waits. Listens. Holds her breath. A guttural roar rips the air behind her. When she turns, she sees a scarred and misshapen face. A monster wielding a thundering chain saw. Terrified crows bolt from the trees. Mikaela screams along with the woman and awakens with a start, covered in sweat, lying in the dark. A nightmare."

Claudette is honestly a character who I hope gets another Tome; it could be so interesting to see her in her college days, maybe meeting people on forums like her, or maybe even her exploring a weird plant that turns out to be from the Entity (I know, more continuity, but I think not exploring how a botanist sees the Entity is a major missed opportunity). I know there’s currently a version of her that seems to be heading a group of survivors looking to escape the Fog, so clearly, Claudette has the hidden potential for incredible strength and leadership. I hope we one day get to see that more fully realized.

As a fellow ASD member of this community I feel like Claudette needs a lot of work before I consider her a good asd rep I mean she needs a bit of work but the parents and how they are "affected" by autistic kids just being themselves is an ableist way of writing asd characters imo

As a fellow ASD member of this community, I honestly want good representation and all but I myself hate to be patronised and in any kind of grouping most of the time so I will continue to act like I don't care. But I do care, I just won't let it be a big deal for me

I have Autism, and ADHD. Was diagnosed young. My mum raised me alongside my 4 siblings, the main thing she taught me growing up, was that mental disorders like Autism and ADHD are not excuses for behaviour, they are instead challenges that can be overcome. Nowadays unless I tell someone about being Autistic and having ADHD, they cant tell. That's the kind of representation I wanna see but never will. Someone who has learnt to deal with and master their challenges and has risen above them. It's a reason why I think dwight would have been a better person to have autism, since he is weird to a degree, but hes also the defacto leader of survivors(as seen with his perks)
@BubbleBunnyy
@BubbleBunnyy Год назад
@@Lordgraysonidk how I feel about that, masking is kind of sad to me, people with neurodivergency are forced in a way to be “normal” I’m definitely adhd I think maybe I’m autistic (my brother is and my bf is and my best friend is, my bf and best friend think I am) I don’t want to hide those parts of me I wanna embrace my weirdness I like being different. I hate faking who I am it hurts me a little inside, I’d rather be rejected than not be true to myself. I don’t think making characters outwardly autistic is bad. I don’t think characters who are good at masking is bad but I don’t think that should be the norm because that’s not realistic either. Most autistic people, at least that I’ve met, aren’t perfectly good at masking and blending into every day society.

When you brought up the "masking" thing it really made me think. Back when i used to see a therapist for depression (for context im native american and my tribe pays for that and was 20 at the time), they said I Might be autistic. I asked what makes her think that, she said there were some things but notably a trait was that I didnt look people in the eyes when I spoke or they spoke, but rather near their head. I said well I'm just not comfortable looking into peoples eyes and it feels confrontational. After that I looked her in the eyes more in that session and she said any ideas I might be autistic went away. Like I was suddenly "all there" when i looked directly into their eyes. Stuff like that makes me think she didnt consider masking as a behavior autistic people(adults) use to blend in. Im still not sure whether or not I really am Autistic and I dont want to diagnose myself or anything but I still wonder if it would mean anything if I was.

I'd definitely encourage you to see an informed ACAS. An ACAS is an Advanced Certified Autism Specialist, they basically have the credentials of actually studying autism more than the average therapist. The average therapist is only taught the basic criteria of the DSM-5, which is very focused on the study of autistic white boys, and therefore is extremely limited. The basic checkpoints that they are taught is not making eye contact, doesn't communicate feelings, antisocial, and things such as that. But autism is quite complex in presentation especially based on socialization/conditioning, and the psychology field has a lot of racial and gender based biased in diagnosis, and that ends up with people not being taught autistic traits that aren't "common" and misdiagnosis happening constantly. Which is why the "rates" of autistic women is less; it's not actually less, autistic women are just overlooked and misdiagnosed with BP1 & 2, borderline, and ADHD. Which is why there's actually a large influx of autistic women who are diagnosed as adults. The norm for autistic women is generally being diagnosed at age 14+ rather than 3-10, from everything I've gathered from peers and groups for autistic women. Finding a trauma informed therapist who knows what they're talking about with autistic girls especially is what I'd overall recommend. I mention autistic girls especially because if a specialist knows traits in autistic girls, who are largely misdiagnosed and underrepresented, they'll likely be helpful overall! If you were in my state I'd recommend my ACAS, as she's informed and very good at identifying autism. But I sort of doubt you're in the same state as me haha. Overall, looking on PsychologyToday may help and only getting the opinions from specialists or experienced psychologists.

I get what you mean, this is literally happening to me with my own therapist and it's distressing. I've been feeling a lot of self doubt about this, unsure if I should blame myself or this apparent part of who I am for certain characteristics of me. All I know is a few years back, I received a diagnosis from my former psychiatrist, but couldn't get a certificate of that due to the pandemic, so now a few good years have gone by, I am now 18 and I've become far too accustomed to masking and mimicking neurotypical social customs to appear like I'm blatantly on the spectrum. Shit sucks, just wish I could get it over with. Like, I know I'm on the spectrum! I hate that I have to deal with someone that barely knows about it, and won't believe me no matter what, and worse is that the people in my life don't know much either, so they either believe me or say "I don't see it"...

Great video as usual! I hadn't thought about the fact that Claudette's tome focuses on her parents rather than herself. I think her mother being autistic herself mitigates some of the "ick" factor, but like you said, it would have been nice if it was more about Claudette. Personally, it was my first time seeing any portrayal of a canonically autistic character, especially of an autistic WOC, and I was so overjoyed that it kind of overshadowed any other thoughts. At the time of reading her lore and tome, I was actually in the process of getting diagnosed myself (not much younger than you did, at 20), so I'll always regard it in a positive light. It probably won't happen since Claudette had a relatively unexciting life compared to other survivors, but it'd be great if she got another tome that focused on her adult years. Thanks for doing what you do! As a fellow autistic ace, I admire that you talk so openly about who you are :)

I've been considering the possibility I may have autism recently. The topic has come up again and again and it only feels more likely the more I talk to people who are actually diagnosed. I'm also studying biology in college right now and have been in love with the subject ever since I can remember. With all that being said, I immediately vibed with Claudette the second I read her description. I feel a very strong connection with her character and it's why she's one of my favorite survivors to play. I connect far more with animals than people so I related to her semi-isolation by working with plants and chatting through the internet. I'm so glad you're doing a video on her! Edit: Still watching through the video I just got so excited I had to make a comment first. I have a lot of experience with the "autistic savant" trope, since my potential autism results in hyperfixations which I do tons of research into and my ADD means that I'm always picking up new fixations. It makes me seem like I know more than I do about specific things, which is interesting to compare to the traditional idea of the savant trope. My family always referred to it as being the "absent-minded professor" which, while still pretty stereotypical, describes the nature of hyperfixations much better than pretending people with autism have magical superpowers. Despite seeming like a compliment, it alienates people with autism and ADHD by casting them as somehow beyond normal people.

I am also Autistic and, in all honestly this is the first I've heard of Claudette being Autistic and that kind of warms my heart. TBH I have a lot of thoughts on plenty of the tropes around ASD, and I do feel a little peeved whenever I hear about a supergenius ASD character especially since I personally haver a very hard time learning and the like, and I'm glad it doesn't seem like Claudette dives full on into it. I also very much agree that I'd prefer to see an ASD adult trying to navigate the world, since I have the personal experience of having to learn and adapt to my symptoms on my own in my 20s cause despite being diagnosed young I was given no teaching or tools to deal with it. I feel that in my experience it's hard to find ASD representation and a lot of the time I have to go into headcanon territory, leading to me finding it easier to relate to expressly non-human characters more than humans since they're often the only place I can find anything resembling my own struggles. I hope this isn't too ranty, I've never been great at expressing myself without way too many words

I really appreciate this video as an autistic person (also with ADHD) and found your analysis and Lilli’s perspectives really insightful. I especially liked how you called attention to the focus being on Claudette’s parents instead of on Claudette, and how her lore is focused on when she was a kid. I wasn’t able to get a diagnosis as a kid and I didn’t figure it out until my MID twenties. It’s honestly hell trying to manage everything alone as an adult (and the PTSD from being mistreated due to being neurodivergent). I also wish BHVR wasn’t afraid to name her as autistic. I was surprised when you said it was canon. Not that I disagree obviously; I just wish people weren’t afraid to say it. Hopefully if they give her more lore they won’t be afraid to be more explicit about it.

PixelBush, you're genuinely so awesome for this. Like, this whole video is amazingly done, a delightful look into Claud's lore, only goes to show how important representation can be if done with effort, even yes, it's not perfect. Also, it was especially based how you used your platform to let a black woman in the DBD community speak about a black character! That is quite responsible and just overall great in my eyes. I've always liked Claudette, both for her design and as a character. As a person of color myself I highly appreciate the representation, especially because she doesn't have the typical video game black person look of person with dreads or person with afro. I got diagnosed with ADHD as a kid (it was called ADD when I got diagnosed but they got combined for some reason) so while I cannot say that I shared every experience, I can say that I really related to Claudette struggling in school despite being smart enough to do the work. Especially the "get out of the clouds" bit which I was all too familiar with.

As someone with autism this video resonated with me. I was diagnosed with "a light version of autism maybe Asperger's" as a very young child and my parents really had no idea how to handle it. I don't want to get into my own life drama but hearing about how adults struggle with autism really resonated with me as someone who was constantly told to ignore my autism as a child, and am only now realizing how much it affects me as an adult. (It also really helps that I can get like twenty thousand dollars on my university tuition for being autistic, so yeah thanks dad for making me hide my autism.) But as someone who sorta just lightly skimmed the first tome story when it came out I'm really happy to both listen to and read it more in-depth, and think about the representation of a heavily stigmatized group. I'd honestly love to hear you talk about the Symmetra lore story from Overwatch, both because "Blizzard bad" and every second I spend on the Overwatch webpage is a second I spend hating myself, but also because I think the perspective from someone more knowledgably on autism would be greatly appreciated to provide perspective. I can only speak from personal experience, not research or other peoples' experiences.

I really relate to your Very Personal Bit at 17:40 ish. I’m technically not late-diagnosed but I feel a strong kinship to those who are. I was diagnosed at 4, but my parents were in denial and kept it a secret from me. I found out when i was 15 when my doctor mentioned my autism, not knowing my parents hadn’t told me. For years I was angry with my parents; they had the answer to the “what’s wrong with me? why am i so different from everyone else?” question for more than a decade. They could’ve gotten me an IEP and help at school. All of my “unexplainable” behavior could easily have been explained and managed. But now they realize their mistake, and they can’t change the past, and i’ve forgiven them, because after all they were only doing what they thought was best for me. It ended up being detrimental and causing lots of issues, trauma and challenges that I now have to work through as an adult. But now that I know myself better and understand why I think the way I do, it’s easier to manage. Even though I was diagnosed early, I have a lot of the late-diagnosed experiences like you described

Also this isn’t canon, but as for autistic adult representation in this game I definitely see the Huntress as autistic. Incredibly skilled and proficient in her hyperfocused tasks to the point where she was living alone as a child, but without guidance she doesn’t have the knowledge for things that many of us consider common sense. In this case, caring for children requires feeding them and educating them, not just giving them toys and singing to them. She stims by singing her lullaby. She has strong emotional reactions to some things (ex. her pallet stun sound is way different than any other killer) meanwhile she doesn’t react strongly to things that would evoke strong emotions in others (like in her tome lore when soldiers invade her forest and she seems very calm). It’s one of those things where it’s so heavily implied that people who don’t even play dbd can tell, but never specifically stated so it isn’t technically canon.

I got diagnosed with Autism when I was around 19-20. While I do relate to Claudette's story in a couple of ways, I wouldn't want to judge/critique the rep as I myself am still learning about Autism. I had to go through my entire childhood without an official diagnosis, the main reason being that my dad didn't want to face the possibility of one of his children being disabled. I wasn't even told that I could potentially be autistic, and therefore never properly learned what it was until late in my teen years. When I asked my dad why he refused to get me a diagnosis, he claimed that he didn't want me to get bullied for being Autistic (which, fair point tbh) but he still made no attempt to accommodate for my disability. (that and I still got bullied on account of being "different") But when I finally got my diagnosis, nearly all the things I wondered about myself were completely answered and explained, and day-to-day life has become much more pleasant since I started learning how to lessen the downsides that come with it. So reading through Claudette's story brought a slight sense of comfort when I read of her parents making attempts to help her properly. It was mainly comforting because my mother tried to do the same for the 5-7 years of my life. While I'm not the happiest about my childhood experiences, I'm glad that Autism as a spectrum is being studied and people are working to better understand it; and I hope that it will be taken much more seriously as that understanding grows.

I really felt your comment on the boy from the Babadook. I, as a woman with autism, was really upset to learn people hated Franklin from Texas Chainsaw Massacre as I felt like I was watching an autistic young man getting bullied by his friends and then dying without much ceremony near the end. It was upsetting as it is so rare to see Autism talked about as anything other than Rain man or sociopaths like Sheldon, much less for female characters. I like Claudette but I would really like to see a story with her going to university or leaving her parents safety net, and showing that even if you are super focused on your hyper fixation it can still be super hard to keep up with neurotypical peers. Sorry personal rant over XD and I would love to hear you talk about stone by stone and Symmetra's take on the autism experience.

I am a member of the asd community and I have to say I didn't pay much attention to claudettes tome story in the beginning because it wasn't a character I particularly played but after watching your video I have come to realise that behaviour is trying there best to include everyone in way that seem natural but sometimes come off a bit disrespectful to those community members but it's never come off as I'll willed or intentional it's always come across as wrongly worded or focused and I don't have to much of a problem with that as the idea of seeing how it affected her parents would be a unique story point but to have it encompass the entire of the tome story feels like a lack of full understanding of how families with autistic children or even adults as well thrive while struggling in the beginning to see what works and what doesn't to help their child or themselves grow and navigate the world in the best way for them. so while it needs some work in my opinion hats off to you behaviour you done a decent job and keep up the fantastic work pixel you've made it easier to understand the lore in a fun and extremely engaging way ill be waiting by the campfire for the next lore discussion

between my friendgroup it's become an inside joke with the amount of times I get tunneled and camped. everyone does, I know, but I would 85% of the time be first. i even tried being sneakier than normal, because normally my playstyle is rather... not sneaky. but no matter what I did I'd almost always get tunneled, and I can't help but think it's because I'm a claudette main sometimes, even if I don't wear dark clothes. i always wear the bright, white shirt with a green apron. i don't run self care and just play like a normal person, and I never t bag or try to be toxic

Hey Pixel, though I do not comment often, I've been watching and enjoying your content as well as your insights and opinions on all kinds of topics as a person. This probably is a type of comment that you'll see a lot beneath this video in particular, but I've had plenty of experience with this topic myself, being an Aspie and all. I don't mean to go overly into detail on many things me and close family went through, but I genuinly share the way you and many other commenters feel. I merely would like acceptance for who I am and understanding on how both sides feel when engaging with one another, though it still feels like many people consider me and people with similiar disabilities much more alien than they should be. What I am taking an incredibly long and awkward amount of words to say is... it feels relieving in a way, being understood and accepted as a normal human by everyone watching and you opening up about yourself being autistic. Thank you for your honest review and talk about this. It probably sounds weird coming from a random person over the internet who is a stranger, but I feel a genuine sense of pride at how far you have come. Being able to also look at your own mistakes in the past while being true to yourself, I hope your passion keeps you pursuing whatever goal you may have on the Horizon. Also, this is off-topic, but to me, the mere existence of 2018 predator is the absolute funniest shit in the world to me, especially since I have joked about stuff like "Being the next step in human evolution" with them, so the reveal actually had me in shambles. And to whoever decided to read all of this sentimental trash I just barfed up, be it the 'DBD-lore man' himself or just a random passerby, I wish you a wonderfull day and hope you take good care of yourself in these trying times. Thanks for hearing me out. :)

I personally have autism. And mine isn't as bad as others. I am considered high functioning although I do have times where my condition can become overwhelming. When I read claudettes story, I appreciated the sentiment but the issue as well is that I think it's hard for a story written by someone who does not have a condition like autism to write a character who does. It's hard to put yourself in someone's shoes in something as hard as mental illness or mental disabilities. As a writer I understand struggling to write a character you can't relate too. While she is not perfect, I do appreciate the attempt to put someone in a game that I can see alot of my traits in. I think with a little more love and some ret cons for the more problematic pieces would make it perfect in my opinion.

As an autistic adult, some people with autism do have an extreme talent towards certain things but this isn't one size fits all. I know I personally am not a big fan of most sciences and/or maths outside of angles and shapes, but am good at drawing and psychologically analyzing people to a degree. I was diagnosed very early and was given a lot of therapy as a kid, but I'm female here. And even those that get therapy do have to mask to some level in general just to fit in, therapy can treat some issues but it can't make you better at social skills by itself. Just due to when I was diagnosed and noticing how peers react, I'm just better at making a much more convincing mask than most people (note: I can even fake some emotions to the point that some people won't realize when I'm faking those emotions. Literally, I had to do this throughout the pandemic when it came down the anti-maskers and/or anti-vacciers complaining before and after they got sick to me about how unfair and blah, blah, blah. Sometimes they'd complain about their family members dying from Covid too. I really couldn''t feel bad for them - the more they suffered, the more that would make me feel a bit better, considering both my parents also work retail, and I already had some co-workers die from Covid-19. I'd still fake being sympathetic and they'd believe I was despite me thinking, "Literally everything you are complaining could have been prevented if you just bothered to listen and do what something like the WHO said to do. It's literally your own fault you got sick and everything like that happened. You are an idiot that's getting your just desserts for getting a bunch of other people sick by being that stupid.") I have the naturally feeling that if can do something about it then you should. If you medically can't do anything to help yourself, I'll feel bad than because I can relate. If you choose to do nothing to help yourself - that's your own fault, and I can't feel bad at all. Ironically, the pandemic did actually help me out in a few ways, so I took my own advice and got myself a promotion during that time period - (Online shoppers get paid better than Apparel at Walmart). Also as for the Canadians, I'll say the Legion are worse DBD Canadaians.

I think a lot of Autism-related media focuses so much on the people around them because the neurotypical writers find it easier to write from their own perspective than to actually make the effort of listening to an autistic person to understand the matter they want to portray. It goes the same for things like where people writing POC, men writing women, or something as simple as single children writing siblings. I’d advice anyone trying to portray an experience that’s not their own to actually do their research, because otherwise that just leads to harmful stereotypes.

As someone on the spectrum myself, It's cool to see BHVR try to represent people on the spectrum in DBD with characters like Claudette and (quite possibly) Felix being shown, or at least imply that they are on it. I can kinda see where the Felix speculations are coming from as people have pointed out he might be on the spectrum because of his interest in Architecture, he messes with his hands in his idle animation in the lobby (while not holding anything) and he's probably pretty awkward in social situations.

I think the problems with autistic representation in Claudette's tome are a biproduct of it both being the first tome story and Claudette being eight. Behaviour were likely thinking less about the full impact of their representation and more about how to format everything, and for what it's worth I genuinely think the first tomes (about not just Claudette, but also Trapper and the character that would become The Blight) did a good job. Claudette's tome served to show a part of her story we hadn't seen: we knew where she was (social recluse botanist who likes to spend time on online forums) but not where she came from, and her tome illustrates that while also planting seeds of background information about her past. I really hope we get more Tomes for Claudette that investigate more of her life as an adult, but I have a sinking suspicion we never will. A combination of there not being many stories to tell about "a day in the life of Claudette Morel" and also Claudette not being the most popular character (therefor no desire from corporate to put her in a tome to sell cosmetics, therefor no new lore - the "League of Legends" problem if you will) means I doubt we'll get anything new for her, which is a real shame.
@TheBloodyNights

I don't want to insult Lili or even sound insulting. But I'm pretty sure Claudette's color isn't the reason for her being camped, tunneled etc. Killers do that to everyone! Though admittedly some characters get hounded a bit more than others. For example Steve Harrington especially in a Scoops Ahoy outfit will draw them killers to him like crazy. But I'm happy that she feels represented. I never really understood the being represented thing personally in media. I just usually play who I think looks the coolest or matches my personality in whatever game I play. But I know there are those who take it seriously. And it's always nice to see diversity. That being said Feng Min best gremlin!

Seeing Claudette’s perspective in the tome would’ve been great and it sucks that we didn’t get to see that but I personally appreciate the fact that in her base lore she’s an actual character, unlike a lot of autistic “representation” in media that just ends up being “this is the autistic one, we’ll just show the perspectives of everyone around them because autistic people don’t have thoughts, feelings or aspirations, they’re weirdos who act funny and don’t have lives of their own!” At least in they establish her as a character instead of a cardboard cutout only included to get representation points

I am also someone that experiences ASD and ADHD and my biggest issue with the "representation" is that they are often portrayed as being awesome people "despite" their ADHD/ASD etc. It's never portrayed as a strength, or at least very poorly and very rarely, and I think these characters shouldn't also have to be super geniuses to be ALLOWED to be have ADHD or Autism, it should be just part of their lives, but a lot of us grew up with that part of us being rejected. We just want to see our strengths represented rather than just our weaknesses, and I think representation that signifies these characters as different but self sufficient rather than just always "the picked on one" because man don't we identify with that. I personally feel like she needs another tome story as it does not really show anyone what living with autism is like. I hate the trope of focusing on the other characters as I’m sure a lot of people with ASC can relate to how regardless of age, medical staff will talk to anyone but you, the support is focused on how to ‘deal’ with you, and we are taught to behaviour like other people, I would like to see a sorry about a high masking person who masks enough to avoid the negative perceptions but also masks to well to well to receive any support or understanding because “well you are high functioning”. I know behaviour are trying to have more people involved in stories like this, but I feel like this was not written by someone with ASC but someone “knows about it” because they have ‘lived’ with someone with ASC
