There are many versions of "Cumberland Gap" floating around, but I've always been partial to this 3-part rendition in the key of D. Banjo is tuned to aDADE tuning.
A new clawhammer banjo favorite tune and tab is posted to this channel every week - click this link to subscribe and make sure you don't miss 'em: www.youtube.co...
If you have any questions about this tune, the tab, or how to play clawhammer banjo in general, please post it in the comments. I'm happy to reply in text or video, if needed.

Hey thanks for all these videos, I've learned a lot of old time tunes from your videos and really appreciate them. This is also probably one of the melodically clearest versions of Cumberland Gap I've heard claw hammer players put on youtube. Thanks again

It is a wonderful tuning! I remember when I first started using that tuning years ago, I didn't re-tune for about 6 months.

The last lick sounds like OCMS' version of "Carry me back to Virginia". :)

Love it. I've been watching and listening, trying to get it down. Struggling a bit. Do you have a tab?

I love this tune. I've been trying to figure out where the words go in this arrangement. Would they just go in the A part? There are so many versions of this tune and lyrics, I'm scratching my head.

They don't go anywhere in this arrangement, there's no much noise. Check out Clifton Hicks version sounds clearer and he sings it too.

Hi there...really well done...I have been frailing since the 70's with bare fingernail and thumb....I have banjo (Gold Tone)just like yours for clawhammer in drop C. Question...I get nowhere near the volume. Is your banjo plugged in or are you using picks on the back of your nails?

Hi Josh - The tab linked here gives me the easy banjo level 2 tab, is there there any way to get the tab for the more complicated version you are playing here? I always enjoy your videos, thanks!

Josh, I wish there was an instructional video to accompany this. Just can't seem to get the 'A' part right. Nor the 'B' part. And did I mention the 'C' part? However, I will practice and use the performance video as a guide. Thanks for all your work with the tunes and songs of the week.

I notice your index finger is extended, are you using your middle finger to downstroke?
@ClawhammerBanjo

+Ian Solheim Yep, middle finger strikes the strings (more info here if you're interested: clawhammerbanjo.net/8steps )

HI, i have a quick question. I was under the assumption that D tuning was f# (D, F#, A, D)? So, do you have your banjo tuned to g (C,G,C,D) and then put a capo on it and tune the little thin string to a? making it a(D,A,D,E)? Is this D tuning? Wouldn't this be double D tuning? Is there any resources around where we can see what chords would look like in these different (i.e. not open G) tuning? Cheers in advance, D
@golfer0197
@golfer0197 7 лет назад
dan robbins I play his version of Cumberland Gap and yes, you are correct. Double C capoed at 2.
@danielkingston5731
@danielkingston5731 6 лет назад
As golfer said below. It's double C (gCGCD, as you said) capo'd up to what you called "Double D", but I've also heard it called "Old Time D" for its common use in Old Time music like this.

Hey I was looking at the tab and it seem to match the arrangement in the video. Maybe I'm confused on reading the tab? Please help. Thanks.
@ClawhammerBanjo
@ClawhammerBanjo 8 лет назад
+Brody Lathan +Brody Lathan the tab does represent what's played in the video (I do typically make variations each time through, but the tab represents the foundation from which these come). Here's an article on reading the tabs you may find helpful: clawhammerbanjo.net/how-to-read-banjo-tabs/

Well dang I guess the song is a lot harder than I thought, it's just not sounding right. Will definitely check out the link on the tab, thank you so much for responding, I really appreciate it.
