You don’t like clay court bc your dad taught you flat stokes. You were good college player but not enough footwork and brush for pros and clay. I grew up on clay so I was beating college players by 16-17 bc my footwork was so much better and variety of shots

Regarding the actor's (Josh O'Connor) serve in Challengers, that was an intentional decision by the filmmakers. The point being that his character was never quite serious about his career and didn't take the effort to correct his technical flaws. So if anything it's a point in favor of the film's effort to depict authentic pro technique. But agree that Zendaya's technique was less than perfect - still an amazing actress!

Absolutely in Monte Carlo I was often finding myself thinking my video feed was off as I couldn't see the ball. Right on with the camera angles. The power and speed of the sport is lost when the spectator has the same view as a bird.

Let's keep an important fact in mind about Nadal. He's played 8 matches - only 8 - this year. That alone is bad enough. But that stat is actually worse than it looks because he basically didn't play at all in 2023. So it's really that Nadal has played only 8 matches in TWO years. And from last June to October, he couldn't even train because he had to heal from the surgery. That he's winning at all is extraordinary. Compare it to a statement made by Sampras in his prime. Monica Seles was away 2.5 years from her stabbing. She came back in the 1995 Canadian Open. She won the tournament. Sampras remarked that if he had been away 2.5 years, he wasn't sure he'd even make it through the qualies of any Masters event. THAT'S the difference between the WTA and ATP tours. This is what Nadal is trying to do. He's living the situation Sampras only mused about. The fact Nadal took out the World #11 in his 7th match in 2 years is astonishing.

@@qtancourt371well it was several months layoff back in 2017 when he had that serious elbow injury. Then it appeared as if he had major marital issues so he took time off the tour.

@@leonardobraynen1524 You Djokovic people just can't help yourselves by injecting him into any conversation about Nadal where he doesn't belong. It's pathetic. Nadal had a major hip surgery in June of 2023. It's not just that he couldn't play tennis for 5 months - he could do no training at all for that period because the surgery had to heal. That's WAY more serious than Djokovic having tendonitis in his elbow. There is no comparison to make, as much as you all keep trying to make one. Good grief.

Yes, and for me, the issue is indeed how sunny the court is (not just the clay factor). I also had difficulty tracking the ball when there was extreme glare on the courts in Doha, Dubai, etc.

Hey Nick, i had the same problem with the ball in Monte Carlo. Wasn‘t fun to watch at all 😣….this is the first year i recognise this problem…and don‘t worry, your vision is not the problem. My eyes are very good and i also find it hard to see the ball 😉

oh I 100x prefer the eye level closer up view it's far better. I can barely watch pro tennis when I can watch winston feature atp players or d1 players it's way more entertaining and interesting to watch. I prefer to watch the damn atp warmups than the matches themselves most times feelsbadman :( AT LEAST GIVE US CAMERA ANGLE OPTIONS TO WATCH IT JESUS, we know they have the cameras rolling eye level.

Pro tennis coverage should not compare itself to even youtubers but to to games or movies. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to select court level view or bird's eye view and switch between them as per our liking. We should be able to always get the court level OR bird's eye view from the POV of our own favorite player. We should be able to switch off commentaries while keeping the atmospheric noise, possibly even switching between affiliate commentators as per our liking. Pro tennis coverage is still like it used to be in the 80s and no youngster comprehends why, even this geezer doesn't.

The camera angle makes all the difference in ball visibility. We had the same problem in Cincinnati last summer. The camera has to be lower. Better anyway.

"Not seeing the ball on court", same here! IT happened the same in Monte Carlo yes! They have to chance the cameras angles. It's terrible not seeing a beautiful sport like this not happening , or not watching it properly!

I could not follow the ball at Monte Carlo on the sunny days What made it worse was the camera angle. The bottom of the screen was full of spectator heads instead of the court. It was frustrating to try to watch. I would much prefer the angles that you describe on some youtube tennis videos with cameras mounted on the fence. Much more enjoyable to watch.

I noticed too how hard it was to watch the ball in the last tournaments too but I’ve also commented incessantly on tennis tv channel that the position of the camera in my tournaments is WAY TOO HIGH and just not fun to watch at all. I love the court level view points much better! And yes, you provide all the tennis lessons and wisdom on your channel for free and I’m one the lucky ones to have used this blessing and gift from you. Thank you!

Not your vision… I can’t see the ball well either these past tournaments… and that’s on some nice 4K TVs. I, too, loose the ball and often have to infer what’s happening from body movements.

Blue clay kids.......watch highlights when Madrid did the "great experiment" and pissed off Novak and Rafa. Looked beautiful on T.V. Still looks beautiful watching it today. Daytime tennis was easy to watch on this stuff. Flame me all you want lol.

So, so true. I lose the ball so often during the clay court season. I don’t know what the solution is but it’s 2024. Technology is unbelievable. We shouldn’t be losing the ball while watching matches in 4K.

Yes Monte Carlo camera was bad. Madrid is a little better. Changing the TV Setting to Sports helped tremendously. Higher contrast.

The indoor courts that I play on have just changed from orange clay coloured carpet to purple carpet. Massive improvement in visibility. Yellow balls against orange clay is just a bad idea.

Your opinion about my Rant: I really think there should be a limit to level the volume of "screamin and shouting" When I watch Sabalenka playing I hardly resist more then few minutes. And it is a pity for she is a great player.

I totally agree with you on the difficulty to follow the ball on recent clay tournaments, especially in certain sun/shade conditions. My vision is not perfect but I have to get closer to the screen to be able to follow the ball all along. Some video treatment could perfectly be done by broadcasters to enhance the visibility/contrast of the ball.

To see the ball better - especially with footage such as that from Monte Carlo - you want a dimly lit room and a fine plasma TV (e.g. a 9th gen Pioneer KURO) setup right and correctly calibrated, then you will be able to discern the shades of colour of the ball vs the court much easier and the motion will always be spot on too. The only downside is that you might want to watch TV a whole lot more with such a setup.. That’s my tip.

I agree that tennis isn’t an elite sport. I played in Canada at the age of 24 for the first real time with a walmart racket that cost under 20 dollars in 2007 and some crap balls on a free public tennis court. Now my racket costs more around 3-400 canadian (only buy a new one after several years) and play for a club that the yearly dues are a couple hundred. Compare that to hockey and that barely covers the cost of gloves and a helmet…

About Monte Carlo, you were not alone not to see the ball; so be happy your sight is okay. It was the wrong camera setup. Wrong lens, wrong distance, wrong frame blending option. Probably the biggest problem there is that the camera, in the broadcasting system, turned on a frame-blending option. That's why probably the ball when it had enough phase, blended in the clay texture of the court surface and got invisible. It is so amazing that no one did anything to correct it.

I couldn't see the ball at all on TennisChannel during Monte Carlo. The too high camera positioning was an epic fail. It's gotten a little bit better during Barcelona and Madrid. TennisChannel needs to do a better job.

It seems to me that a lower angle camera is prefered by us tennis freaks. I would like to know the opinion of the general public, maybe it is too stressful for them? If they always use that there should be a reason... I hope we could choose

I have had the same problem seeing the ball at those tournaments. very difficult to the track ball and notably more difficult than other recent events.

Yup. Can’t see the ball as well. For the other topic, I think it’s elitist, not elite. The top pros are all elite players, but mostly not elitist. There is however, a chunk of elitism in tennis that is more than unfortunate.

Hard to see the ball as always. I think that with 8k screens and AI and tech all will be better but it's frustrating to notice that the ball was better visible in analog old tv screens.

In terms of ball visibility, Blue clay could work, the reason it didn’t in 2012 was because of the poor drainage and heat baking the salt during construction.

Thanks for this video and your other tips. I think Zverev had a horrible injury vs. Rafa? So I suspect Rafa will have a big mental edge against him. As for Alcaraz, I think he respects Rafa so much, it'll be hard for him to beat him. So as long as he's injury free, this should be a clear path. BTW, much harder for me to see the ball on Grass at Wimbledon.

Nadal doesn’t stand a chance against Lehecka, even though I would like to see him winning another match. The game is tomorrow, he will be very tired probably. Lehecka is serving big, has beaten top 10 players this year. Rafa will really have to grind on his service games.

I wish they would do the broadcast with 2 cameras; you choose you angle for the main view as the first option or a split screen. If you have 2 screens a dual broadcast. The replay angles would be up to them to use the side camera or whatever they usually do.
