From my extensive experience with solvents (i.e. _Breaking Bad_ episodes), some plastics are more resistant than others. In all seriousness, most gasoline cans are plastic... so some plastics must be compatible with petroleum products. I couldn't hope to know how to tell the difference.
Btw, what kind of stain was that? What brand and what tint? And also what kind of wood were you applying it to? I only ask because it looks awesome and not very splotchy on that wood and I'm having a very hard time avoiding this blotchiness
