I clean my stove vent filters all the time (every couple of weeks) with dawn dish soap and hot water, but I decided to give your OxyClean method a try....... it was fabulous. This was hassle free and quick. Soak for 10 minutes and rinse and done. This is my new go-to method. BTW, I tried using the dishwasher once to clean the filters, but the caustic chemicals ruined/discolored the filters and mine cost over $70 to replace, which I did. I also tried the oven method once, the grease baked onto the filters instead of melting off and discolored the filters a dark brownish-yellow. Yuk

3:38 Because oil dissolves oil. in fact you don't need to use mineral oil, any kitchen oil works the say way, it's just that if you need to make sure to clean out the kitchen oil more thoroughly than mineral oil, you can also try the oil method on removing glue residue.

Hate to admit this but I never even knew this filter existed. I went and checked mine out it's really small 5 x 7 1/2 and very clean (looks new). Now I don't do that much stovetop cooking but I'm renting so it could have been dirty from prior occupants. So either they didn't cook or I have the best landlord ever who either cleaned it or replaced it when she bought the house and rented it to me.

I always put mine in the dishwasher and use enzyme cleaner (1 Tablespoon in the soap dispenser) instead of soap and both come out clean and smelling fresh. Of course I use 1 cup vinegar in a hot wash cycle to take the calcium buildup out of the thing too so that helps keep the drain clean. As for removing them they either slide sideways or pop off. Sometimes the top of your range can flip up as well and it's good to clean that in case of fire. Check the owners manual to read how to open or run your fingers along the edges to look for a lever or switch or just gently but firmly pull up on the edge to see if it pops up. There ought to be a prop to hold it open during cleaning. Note the drip pans and heating elements will need removed before you get up close and personal poking around on you cooker. Best wishes.

I try to reply but comments have been disables in this video. You boil a pot with water large enough where you can put filter. After its boiling pour baking soda like a cup and after you pour it it will Zizzle then u put in filter let it sit like a minute if it fits the whole filter or just do half of it then turn it over the the undone side. Hope I explained it right and believe me it works.

I can't figure out how to post my pic - - - I cleaned my filter about 4 months ago, I don't do much frying. I used a spray mixture I make myself with ammonia and liquid dish soap in it - pretty well dissolves the grease, sprayed it with hot water, then put it in the dishwasher. I agree with what you say about putting it in the dishwasher - we definitely don't want to clog that up with grease!!! Years ago when I had a really badly encrusted filter, I used an auto degreaser on it, then hot water, worked like a charm.

You're right about boiling hot water and enzyme cleaners, I use a powder for clothes hand washing and it works wonders after an hour of soaking and minor scrubbing. The downside to it is firstly you have to wear gloves when you scrub cause enzymes are really tough oh the hands, and secondly you have to rinse thoroughly to get the detergent off (especially powdery ones). After all if you do deep fry or just fry on the stovetop often it's essential that you do it once a month or just whenever you see it start building grease. The less greasy, the less time it'll take to clean.

September, but obviously we have fried more than the previous homeowners because the filter is still slightly scungy (sic) after I tried the boiling water and the open dishwasher detergent pack-method. I will definitely be trying Oxy-Clean tomorrow.

My husband put the filter in our old dish washer yrs ago and the grease was everwhere inside the machine it was gross! I was so made that he didnt consult with me about how to clean it. It took forever to get that grease out of the dishwasher. I think using OxiClean or baking soda and vinegar in just boiled water work best.

I cleaned mine a few months ago, and it was gross, but not terrible; I clean it about once every 3 months by soaking it in the kitchen sink with Dawn dishsoap.

So, are you saying that those crispy tastes that I find on top of my fried eggs and fries come from these filters? I have to clean them, or just ∆ them?

I have Thermador HPIB48HS Island Hood. Cleaning the filters, no problem. But how do I get to the motor and fan inside the unit? these have a layer of grease which drips onto the stove below. There is also a metal screen mesh covering the motor...which doesn't seem to come out. Is there any documentation on how to get to the motor and fan for cleaning?
