Watching this video, I paused it to go tackle the floor of my walk-in closet. Took 10 min and it’s done. My reward is watching the rest of the video. Thanks 😊
Excellent video Kallie! I've been hearing about "Just 5 min" for several weeks. You are the ONLY person to fully explain the concept! Thanks so much for all your help❤
Great video! I have MS and I can’t do more than 5-10 minute bites in between rest sessions. I called it commercial break cleaning. I clean in commercials and rest while I enjoy my favourite shows.
It’s nine months later but here I am chiming in to say “me, too!” I have trouble with standing, walking, and sitting so to counteract all the time I spend reclining on pillows with my legs stretched out in front of me, I use an app called “Stand Up” I set it to go off every hour or so then fold laundry or load the dishwasher or just shuffle around to music. 🙂
I am a much more organized and disciplined person now after watching your videos for over a year. You are a very good teacher kallie. I use this 5 minute timers nowadays to break that brain jam. So nice to see you talk about the same.
I really appreciate the education on this executive function: task initiation. It's really helpful to understand why we're avoiding something and when we can't change it, how we can work around it!
I love it. Most people would be so overwhelmed and not start at all. By only committing to 5 minutes, they will start and make a move in the right direction and feel good about the progress which in turn helps them do it again because it gave them a good feeling after the initial 5 minutes.
I've been watching your content for a while and it's been very helpful I've been recently diagnosed with adhd which cause (among other things) difficulty initiating task and staying on task, also emotional dysregulation which can lead to feeling chronically overwhelmed, so now i understand why you've been so helpful to me So thank you and take care 😊 Ps sorry about my English, I'm French 🤫
I'm glad you showed that there were a few things still out of place when the 5 minutes was done. :-) Thanks for mentioning task initiation - I looked up which part of the brain is responsible for that (top frontal lobe), and whoah! So much of my life makes sense now, why some things are so much easier than others, and what to do to have more say in how I spend my time and which things I get done. There are internal cues (thoughts) and external cues about starting a task and what to do next. The external cues are so much easier for me to respond to. Setting the alarm is an external cue to get started, the objects are an external cue about what to do next (do one more object, then one more object, then one more...). Truly life-changing explanation, I can't thank you enough for pointing me in that direction!
I have used this philosophy for years, as a Mother of four and busy schedule, things can get out of hand quickly. So I taught my daughters to put a timer on for twenty minutes and clean as much as we can and usually we were very happy with the results. And we rewarded ourselves with a family fun day
I have a craft room that I need to purge & organize! My granddaughters call it my “crap” room!😂🤣 I absolutely LOVE that they are now at an age (10 & 8) that they will go into the room and spend an hour or more creating and they know where everything is, not matter how unorganized it is! There is just SO MUCH from 20+ years of collecting and hoarding because you never know when you’re going to need that ONE special piece of scrapbook paper or that coveted set of rubber stamps or the fabric to make just the right project or the perfect piece of ribbon!🤦🏻♀️ You may have just inspired me!!
I've noticed once I start cleaning I keep cleaning until I get too tired to do anything else. When I start working on a room I won't stop until I get it cleaned up even though I make a big mess and it looks so bad but then when I get it put away I feel so about myself and so proud of myself.
This principle was life changing for me. Except my capacity was so small I could only do 15 seconds at a time. I'm up to 2 minutes and 45 seconds now and momentum is growing. Little slots hard won. But their impact is real. The little bites add up.
Love this! I think ill try this today. I'm in my third trimester of pregnancy and I'm exhausted when i wake up😭 so five minutes to get things put together (because my clutter is driving me crazy) sounds manageable
This is Super Helpful! I feel like you are my personal cheerleader, and I REALLY need a cheerleader😋 GO TEAM!!!!!!!! PS, the difference between Being a procrastinator and being in the Habit of procrastinating is the beginning of a HUGE mental shift. Health and Happiness to ALL❣️
Love this.. it’s CRAZY how long 5 minutes actually IS!!! During the 4 minutes my coffee brews I emptied the dishwasher, made the bed and sorted out a week’s worth of supplements into the daily container. I couldn’t believe it! This got me to set the timer again later to see how much cleaning I could do in 5 minutes. Amazing. I kept checking the timer thinking it must be over.. but no! We really psych ourselves into thinking that 5 minutes is ridiculous…but it is actually a long time!!!😂😂 I love these videos. I’m not a dollar store person, so these really speak to me and get me motivated. Thanks!
Yes, you found the secret. Two minutes while my tea water is in the microwave = wipe down of counters and a sweep of the floor. Watch TV? So much can be achieved during commercials.
I do 10 minute increments! I am having my daughter do the same to clean her room. I just tell her to go clean for 10 mins, I don't care what you clean just do something for 10 mins. I pick one thing I want done and then work on that in small increments. My back won't let me work longer than 10 mins at a time so that's why I chose that amount! I used the same bins, that you have in your closet, in my bathroom closet and it looks soooooooo much better now!!
I utilize something like this at work- I had a coworker leave, and left behind a mountain of physical items to be sorted and either sent to offsite storage or kept in the office. After a couple initial days of just sheer annoyance at him doing this to us, I decided to dismantle it in small bites. So far I've made some great progress and every step forward feels better. Like the old saying, How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!
This video is like the only thing a chronic procrastinator needs for taking the first step out of that goddamn cycle. I've been there, im making a huge effort since february and im very proud with my progress. This video is essentially therapeutic, I hope it finds everyone who needs this crucial guidance. Thank you so much. Appreaciated and saved!
Proper self talk and not labeling ourselves by the behavior - powerful and insightful. If only we could be as kind to ourselves as we are with our children. We wouldn't dream of berating them the way we do ourselves.
So, I've recently taken to writing down every single small task individually on a check of list. It sounded overwhelming at first, but once I got started and felt the confidence boost of crossing things off the list I realized it was really easy. Now when the house is clean making the list is overwhelming 😅... Or maybe just getting started doing the tasks on the list... But once I get started it's just great!
Do 10 minutes of cleaning the kitchen everyday. Make it a priority. 10 minutes cleaning the kitchen everyday no matter what. Most days I get it done in the morning, but today I focused on laundry so only got to the kitchen right before bed, but still did it.
Having my home clean and uncluttered allows me to offer to host Mom’s group spontaneously- wow ! Understand ing that cleaning is a process and is never finished helps me too. I wouldn’t get mad because I have to take a shower every day, and vacuuming is the same. Thanks Kallie !
Love the video, wish it wasn't sponsored by Better Help. Overall, they do not employ high quality therapists, and the cost is higher than using insurance. Take the time to search for a therapist who will be a good fit, rather than what seems like the cheap option.
Wow! I’m glad I decided to read the comments because I was definitely looking into BetterHelp since I need to find a new counselor. Thank y’all for the info! 😊
It’s like putting away laundry. I have no issue getting to the folded laundry in basket part. Then it sits in the basket for days. I’ve timed it, it takes 4 min to put away and bring the basket back to the basement.
Thanks for showing the process in the closet! I’ve tried the 5 min. process, but often it doesn’t work. There’s a part of my brain that says “you can’t fool me. I know you’re going to keep going to the point of exhaustion. I’m not falling for that again. “ 😠 I think I need to actually stop after 5 minutes so I can trust myself to stop. I can always renegotiate another 5 min. and other, but I need to be willing to say no to additional time blocks. Note: my time blocks will often be 10-20 minutes. The whole point is to say it’s ok to stop when the time is up. Please tell me I’m not the only one with this problem.
It's so common that the youtubers mention it a lot. You're not alone. Task initiation is one executive function; inhibition is another executive function. Here's a tip: decide specifically what you're going to do in some other space after the 5 minutes is up, then when the alarm goes off, say out loud "Marie, now it's time to..." and fill in the blank with what's next, and go do that thing. It can be something really simple like, turn around to look outside the window, or check the mail, or do a wiggle wiggle dance in the other room. You can have fun with it.
Just curious, does your husband help you clean up? Mine never used to but now that my kids are grown he does 🤦♀ I'm a clean/neat freak. I never leave my kitchen messy. I love your closet ideas.
Love your videos! Can you do a video on file cabinet, so many documents and 3 plastic bins full of pictures, should I scan and trash the fotos? Any helpful idea? I live in a small apartment with no more space for any storage 🙃 Thank you!! Blessings 😇
Great video Kallie! I did this in my bathroom. I need more motivation. I'll sit down and take a break (if I'm doing it longer) and then that break can sometimes last for days! I know there's the timer method but then I'd have to set a timer blah blah blah you get it lol 😉
I just watched you for the first time today. I just subscribed. I have started doing this because I just got out of hand and I said enough. Looking forward to more videos .
You are such a delight in my day❤ I suffer from anxiety and depression so it’s so hard to get motivated and get started😢 I’m a clean person FORSURE I hate dirty living.. but I have so much Crafting stuff I’m so overwhelmed 😂😮 I don’t know how to store it all… I need to purge and get rid of so much… but then I’m like oh, all this is worth so much money your throwing out/donating… oh I could post it and sell it , then I’m stuck holing on to it for GOD knows how long😂😂😂 I need help!!!!
What were you doing with all the stuff you took out of camera new from the office? Did you put it away in the room where it belongs? Or just in a box to be relocated after the office was clean? I wish I could push a button and put myself in warp speed like you are in the video. 🤣😂🤣😂. Maybe I will give this a try in the morning.
I do not mean to offend anyone when I make the next statement, so please don't angrily message me. My mother taught us to put things back as soon as we used it. I understood and appreciated that lesson when I raised my three children and had to keep my household clean. It really does help in the cleaning of my house. My children are grown but I still implement putting everything up after I use it. It's in its place and I know where it is.
I do this too, but I also try to make everything easier to put away properly than wrong. For example, on my bathroom sink I have a decorative 2 tier tray where I keep my perfumes & it's easier to just put it back rather than set down on the counter. Same with a basket of all my makeup on the other side of the sink, finish using the product & toss back in the basket. In the kitchen frequently used tools sit in a crock by the stove & often used spices are on a small under cabinet shelf. Decorative shelves, baskets, pretty boxes & even vases can be used to keep almost anything thing handy & easy to put away after use without your stuff looking cluttered.
I just found your site. I am moving out of a house that I have lived in for 48 yrs. The townhouse is 1,000’ sq smaller and I’ve been a stamper for 30 years. I have my work cut out for me.
i have a list of things that absolutely need to be completed before I give myself permission to sit in front of the tv: lunch and breafast table ready for the next day, no dirty dishes in the sink and counter, clothes and gym bag ready for the next day and shower taken. I often do them with a sigh but I thank myself the next morning ! I wake up at 6h15 and leave for the gym at 6h45. I would not be able to do it without that routine !!
Hi there …love…LOVE YOUR videos…you are totally right….but l put my favourite song on[with my watch as a timer..a count down mode…and the watch vibrates when time is up] the song is up in about three to four minutes. The song is always a dance to Beat …WOW YOU should see me go …it really helps {like the song whistle while you work}. It really is magic. P.s. and l’m old
Excellent! I realized I need to leave my tablet in the bedroom, and not just sit down immediately, first thing in the morning, and view news and videos. I set up my podcasts, use my airpods, and walk around listening and tidying. I think I should set a timer. Thanks!
How about doing some recycling. Saw lot of paper go into the trash bag rather than be recycled. When we have paper we're done with it immediately goes into the indoor recycling bin-junk mail or envelopes, flyers, grocery bags, etc
