This used to terrify me, so much I never used to do it. BUT... cleaning your sensor is actually super easy and saves a load of time in post-processing so I thought I'd share with you how I keep it good as new!

Do you clean your sesnor?

Hi Hannah. I have used the curtain (always) and the rocket blower (never without one) and followed your techniques, I take shots of a plain wall before and after. I have not used the sensor cleaning wipe tool - not needed to to date - but I have heard that you need to be extra careful of the camera body includes IBIS with a ‘movable’ sensor mount.

The rocket blower is a life saver! You do have to be very careful - a super super light touch if you do need to wipe 🙌🏼

Most cameras with IBIS have a cleaning mode where it locks the sensor and make sure it doesnt move.

Nice and to-the-point video on the topic! One note is to be careful not to use too much cleaning fluid. You really only need a couple of drops. This will prevent getting moisture residue on the sensor and have liquid flow to the electronics beyond the glass plate over the sensor.

Thank you and very good tip too - I hadn't thought to mention that. Thanks so much for watching :)

I've been a photographer for 15 years and so far (touch wood) have never needed to clean a sensor on any of my cameras. I check a couple of times a year (usin ghte method you mention of taking a photo of a plain background) and any dust that is there (and there is rarely any there) has always been cleaned away either by the auto clean funstion of the camera or with a trusty rocket blower. And I do change lenses out in the field, often not in perfect conditions, so there is opportunity for dust to get in. I shoot Canon and I wonder if they have betetr protection for their sensors than others, as some Sony shooters I know have constrant trouble with dust on their sensors 🤷‍♂

Oh wow that’s really good - I was thinking you might just been a lot more careful than me. I often get a bit too ‘excited’ and change a bit quick in less than desirable situations 🤦🏻‍♀️ But you could have a point about the Canon…. I’ll do some research. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

@@HannahYoungPhotography i am definitely very careful, always keeping the camera body facing down when no lens attached, using my body to shield from wind, etc. But there are definitly times when i get caught out either in a rush, or drop a lens cap 🤦‍♂

Thanks for the cleaning tips, but please dont use the shuttle mode, the maintenance fee for changing shuttle is much higher than changing the UV glass infront of the CMOS sensor. no one can direct tech the sensor before remove the glass. If any dust stuck between you shuttle, you will know the cost of the always turn the curtain mode.

not dust spots, dust bunnies 🤣 When you clean the "sensor" its not actually the sensor its a glass plate in front of it - normally if you use the cleaning mode first it /should/ then lock the IBIS allowing you to clean it before turning the camera off (which releases the IBIS again) NOrmally you do a swipe left to right then back right to left without remove the swab so you use the edge of each side if that makes sense?

Haha 'dust bunnies' like it. Thanks for the tips too - really useful :)
