I would be tempted to do both in the same way again but add soda crystals/baking soda for 10 minutes at the end. It gives bleach a superpower & it'd fizz all the remnants when it mixes with the citric acid. I'm so tempted to try it myself but I've got so much to do before Christmas that people will see, I'll fight the usual urge to clean hidden things until the New Year 😆

I have to share this. After your video I had Citric Acid on my shopping list. I normally use Lysol bowl cleaner but I had a bottle of Dollar General Toilet bowl cleaner and I decided to try it. I found that if I add about a quarter of the bottle to the tank and let it set for a couple hours (while everyone is sleeping) then flush it and I was AMAZED at how clean the tank became with NO SCRUBBING. I’d like to add after pics but I don’t see that option. I only wish I had thought to take before ones. Sorry but it was brown with a definitive deposit line. I’ve seen many tips & tricks online but none completely remove those dreadful stains and some require at least some hands on scrubbing but not this one. I couldn’t believe it. Now the bowl will stay clean and require less work. I’m doing the main bathroom toilet tank tonight. Hey, you gotta enjoy the small victories in life. Try it for $1.25 it’s well worth it. The Ball brand Citric Acid is $5.43 at our Walmart so the DG Toilet cleaner at $1.25 is way cheaper and it left zero residue.

I would suggest next time you put the Citric Acid in the bucket with the warm water first, then mix it up and pour it into the water tank. Just an idea to make it easier and to make sure all the powered Citric Acid gets mixed up and dissolved.

I read a good post awhile back from a cleaning lady that cleaned offices at night when they were closed. When she started her shift, she poured Kool Aid in the tanks every night when she started. The Kool Aid contains citric acid and that's what I've been using and it works good. She said the toilets at the offices where she worked were all sparkling clean, from the Kool Aid. I did not believe it at first but it does work.

I tried the citric acid method and it's the best I've used yet. We have well water and I find that within a couple days of cleaning just the bowl, it's beginning to show signs of growth. I realized that it was actually the water from the dirty tank that was causing this issue and so set about trying to find the best answer. I got the citric acid and put it to work. I let it sit for 1 hour and was amazed at the results! I then cleaned the bowl as usual and after several days, it is still as clean as it was right after it was scrubbed. It's an amazing idea and now I will apply it to the other two toilets in my home. I love the way you get right down to business in your videos but always keep it entertaining for us as well. Thanks for sharing!

Just a caution. My husband's family has built houses for decades. One thing he always said is never use bleach in the tank. Excellent!! We used to live in a city that had nearly the worst water I'd ever had to use- it was hard and smelled like a pool, and yet, the toilet was a nightmare. So, after I learned about ditching the Bleach and cleaning our home with Whit Vinegar, I thought about how it whitened and refreshed my coffee cups !! I purchased one of the small bottles of white vinegar to keep under the bathroom sink and poured about a cup of it in the tank once a week.... And it was like magic!! When doing weekly cleaning of the toilet I no longer needed to use chemicals and elbow grease. Citric acid is essentially tri-acetic acid, three acetic acid groups attached to one backbone, so it acts as a stronger version of vinegar (dilute acetic acid) with one acid group being neutralized as the pH rises (it goes from citric acid at low pH to mono sodium citrate to disodium citrate to trisodium citrate at very high pH -- mind you this is not quite right because we are dealing with solutions and H+, Na+ and citrate ions, but you can buy all of the mentioned chemicals as solid material).... It can chelate metal ions like edta does. Yes, I am a chemist. Now bleach will work against algae growth and acidic deposits. But lime is a base as is sodium hypochlorite (bleach), so the deposits are less likely to remove them, although since it is a strong oxidant, any organic matter including susceptible plastics and elastomers (rubber-like polymers) will be damaged by it.

Thanks for this great tip! 1. I used one of those giant pills. It helped a lot, but it warped the flapper beyond repair. 2. I had a guest bathroom toilet, rarely used, that got as bad as these. I gloved up and hand scrubbed with a rough pad. I don't recall what product I used, but hand scrubbing was an excellent start. I probably used foaming cleaner + chlorinated cleanser. I keep the tank nice by flushing once a week, and spraying the insides of the tank with 409®, to disinfect. The nasty stuff has not come back in two years.

We had no problem using the citric acid and no problem with warping anything. I am not suggesting anything stupid when using it, so don't eat it, unless you are pickling but t's also good enough for human consumption because it's used in canning and pickling. If it doesn't harm us, why would it harm the flapper? I don't get it. Besides who wants to scrub that stuff? It's almost impossible to get it looking clean like the citric acid does. You know they also make tablets of the citric acid for cleaning toilet bowls? Wal-Mart carries it.

I heard that those giant tablets that you put in your tank are the ones that hang over the seat part I was told you should not use them I was told by a master plumber clogs up your Jets they're not good for your toilet and don't use them so I've never used them after being told that

It destroyed your flapper I was told not to put any of that stuff in your toilet you are asking for trouble and it clogs your jets!!!! And look what happened it ripped up your flapper Jets will be clogged do to put in a giant pill in there for anything related to that it clogs your jets & does damage to your toilet don't want to have to replace that whole thing

Bleach will corrode the ball. She should use vinegar and baking soda. Empty tank and add both. Scrub with a toilet bowl brush. You need to remove the slime build up on the sides as well. I also read about a few drops of vanilla extract mixed with water and placing in a spray bottle. Then after the cleaning process, spray vanilla extract mixture in the tank. I tried it and it smells so lovely.!

Baking soda neutralizes the vinegar( Acid) so all you get is foam. No reactivity with mineral elements in the tank.

I want to say I have tried: white vinegar...vinegar + baking soda....Efferdent tabs....CLR....everything I have found...let sit overnight each time...nope...and yes my tanks (2 baths) were horrible...this house was from 1988....so....I am gonna tell you what not only worked like magic...but no touch and no scrub and in less than *2* hours....IRON OUT...a powder I found at Walmart...around 12.00...but both tanks are like brand new! I had thought I had to let sit 5-6 hours...nope...1.5 hours and I went in to peek...OMG...all stains were gone! Now...you do not want this powder on you...you do not want to bend down and put your face close to pouring in the powder.....but I had no fumes and just walked away...had NO idea that in that short time...it would look that good...yes, I have pictures! Now...I do not think I would need to use this product very often...actually...the tanks are so clean...a periodic run of vinegar and baking soda ( organic) would keep things in check...I am a very pro organic natural cleaner type of person...my bottle of go-to cleaner is white vinegar/dawn (95/5%)...if it's super greasy...I use the Dawn powerwash, spray, sit and clean...I only use white vinegar as my rinse agent in my washing machine...so I am not a chemical person...but this truly worked like magic...so once it's good and clean...I feel I can keep up with a more organic procedure!

Some makers of toilet float valve mechanisms warn against using cleaning products that contain or generate chlorine bleach (soidum hypochlorite solution), because (they say) it will damage the float valve mechanism. That warning precludes using some (many) of the tablet-style, per-flush cleaning options. I'm not sure if a one-shot, short-term exposure to chlorine bleach, as in this video, would have the same potentially damaging effects as long-term exposure to the chemicals in those tablets. Just a thought.
@donna7338
@donna7338 Год назад
Impressive. I would think CLR would work as well, but would probably be more expensive. What I would do differently: Dissolve the citrus acid in a bucket of hot water and then pour it into the tank and use enough hot water that would fill up over the top of the ring that was left.
