Hey, Such a short-term volunteering opportunity where you lack the skills necessary is not an ethical volunteering company. This company as a whole seems to not be such an ethical volunteering organization, but volunteering for only one day with sea turtles will never be an ethical volunteering opportunity available unfortunately.

Samantha really? What about them makes then unethical? What practices do they do which makes you feel this way?

Dana loves to travel hey! So basically unskilled volunteering like this isn’t great for a bunch of reasons. Primarily, if these were tasks that actually needed completion, the most ethical way to volunteer would be to set up a system by which locals were able to complete these tasks rather than allowing for “voluntourists” to come and fill these roles for a day. Additionally, with positions like this, you need additional skills to deal with animals and especially so it you’re touching them, because animals do not do well with being handled by many different people (especially if they’re being “returned to the wild”). Volunteering where you’re not in a placement for a significant amount of time is never going to be an actually significant job, so the work you’re doing is more to make you feel good than it is to enact real change. Think about their Myanmar volunteering. They were only at the school for a week! And Jess may have primary school certification but Stephen doesn’t and these types of companies don’t vet for experience or safety before allowing them to interact with children. Thank goodness Stephen and Jess are good people, but at best these children are interacting with a new “teacher” every single week and that isn’t good for their emotional stability or intellectual growth. They even said that the “orphans” weren’t always orphans. Lumos.org says that ~80% of kids in orphanages worldwide aren’t actually in orphanages, and sometimes these kids’ parents are paid under the guise of giving their children good education when really they’re being used as bait to attract voluntourists. Of course Jess and Stephen think they’re doing a good thing, and it’s valiant that they’d want to, but I think there’s a reason their more recent videos don’t feature any more work with this company :)
