You can find the toothbrush on Amazon. The liquid in the bottle is saline. In my experience with my six cats, they all use ceramic cat bowls. But some of them have acne, some of them do not. I just highly recommend this kind of toothbrush for cleaning. I think this is more gentle for the cats than the other ways. BTW, these are not flea.
You should only use a metallic bowl and I have to say none of my cats have ever had a problem because that's all I use. I think you need to replace your bowls and see if it improves.
Yes I have four cats and they all have this acne and I find it very difficult to keep on the control I have used all metal bowls before and still do I also have the ceramic or melamine or whatever it is made out of my ultimate because I found neither one of them keeps the acne away completely anyway but I do wash my balls after every meal they eat they have a metal water bowl. I know they all love to rub the scent all over and I try to treat this with just a cloth and water but thank you for telling me about the saline solution I have a whole bottle that I use for my contact lenses which I no longer have you suppose that sailing solution but contact lenses will be okay for me to use on their chin acne. I do know it is not a insect problem because I treat my cats every month plus they have a flea collar on at all times in there all indoor cats
Fun fact: cats are super good about being groomed! They can’t reach their faces or ears without using a paw, so they get very happy about a human doing the job better than they could themselves! But, let the cat lick you too so they aren’t just taking grooming, but also giving it! They love that 🥰
I think it's so cool when my cat tries to groom my hand while I'm petting her. 🥰 I used to have a cat that always followed me into the bathroom. When I stepped out of the shower she would immediately run to my legs and start licking up the water drops. Since cats don't like getting wet I guess she was trying to dry me off thinking I disliked it as much as her. RIP Miss Kitty 2000 - 2019, you are still loved. ❤
Only time I've had issues is when I use a pet safe dry shampoo, everything else is pretty much okay! Oh and eye boogies, my boys hate when I clean their eye boogies.
We adopted a tuxedo cat that had a bad case of it. He was NOT a very compliant kitty, but learned how to clean it up himself. I have had cats all my life, and he was the first one I had ever seen with it.
@@JerseyAccent653 There is no such thing as cat blackheads. Is this woman trying to sell something. Check with your vet, don’t take the word of someone on the net.
This is really cute and probably super relieving for the kitty. 1. They're super hygienic and obsessed with staying clean, but right under their chin must be hard to clean. 2. They clean themselves with a bristly tongue, so a wet bristly brush would feel natural to them. 3. Attention and chin skritches!
I love how well you handle these kitties! Clearly they trust you. Another little tip to help prevent feline acne, always feed them with a metal or ceramic bowl, non porus materials don't harbor bacteria like porus materials like plastic. Also making sure you regularly clean their bowl!
Run the bowls through the dishwasher on the sanitize setting also helps. I run my cats bowls through it by themselves on a cycle with the sanitize option.
That's so true. Growing up I had a Chinese pig...probably 25 years ago. He would get a bunch of acne bumps on his chin. The vet said it could be from the plastic bowls. So we switched to stainless steel and porcelain and it went away.
Also, some cats don't like their whiskers touching the sides of the bowls. My cat used to hate his whiskers touching the sides of his bowl, so that was a turn-off for him. This was a problem because it resulted in him not eating and losing weight. So we got those toddler plates that have those low sides to keep the toddler's food on the plate and he would always eat his food after that. RIP Gritz, my sweet weirdo.
@@msdony308 trust me cat wouldnt be that calm if it was *scratching the infected area" kind of painful. Also cat sebum darkens exactly the same way human does.
I'm glad I watched this. I never knew cats could get blackheads: when I found them on one of my cats, many, many years ago, I just thought he'd got a dirty, infected chin! I'm ashamed to say I wasn't very gentle with him when I scrubbed his chin down with soap and water, and then an antiseptic called TCP. I have to admit I never saw a single blackhead on him afterward. Had I known what they were, though, I would have been far more gentle, and gone about the matter a very different way! On a different note, Twix is well and truly recovered from her ringworm, and she looks absolutely magnificent!
@@liamwaldrep1661 yes! Tabs was a ferocious hunter: we never knew when he went out what he'd come home with... if he brought his kills home, that is! He'd also come home covered in rabbit fleas (Rabbits being his main prey), going down into the warrens for them. Conventional sprays and stuff didn't stop him from picking them up, this being a few years before products such as Frontline and other topical flea treatments became available. I remember seeing these black specks on his chin and simply assumed it was dirt/dried blood. I remember thinking the skin on his chin looked a bit red and swollen, hence the use of TCP. I will record that I did not come away from the operation unscathed, though Tabs did forgive me quite quickly!
Yeah cats can get Blackheads I think they’re why cats mostly have ticks in them are fleas ain’t trying to be mean I’m not saying that the cats not took care of because they are very good
Honestly, we cat owners do the best we can with what we know, but I'm so glad to have more of this information coming out about how to gently treat common medical issues of cats. When I was a kid, outdoor cats were much more common, and so I think a lot of us thought what our cats had on their chins was just dried blood or something. Unlike dogs, which naturally secrete these constant noxious body odours and saliva, cats are known for being very clean animals, and outdoor contaminants can noticeably affect their skin. One of my cats got pecked by a bird once, not even enough to draw blood, and he developed this yellowish sore on his skin. The vet treated him with antibiotics. To this day I'm still not entirely sure what it was.
I saw black spots just like that on my cat's chin. At first, I thought it was either food particles or fleas, but I now know that cats can also develop acne. Thank you for sharing this, it was incredibly helpful. Edit: I know that many of you responding to this are concerned about my cat's wellbeing, but fear not, she wasn't excessively scratching, crying, or anything that would imply that she had fleas. We changed the type of bowls she would eat and drink from, and clean them regularly. She hasn't had those spots on her chin since.
These kitties would probably benefit from having clean stainless steel or glass bowls for each meal! Our orange kitty was prone to acne until our vet recommended switching from plastic to metal and/or glass bowls. Haven't seen any acne since, and that was years ago.
Both of my cats feed from plastic bowls, yet only one gets acne. Do you know any reasoning for this? I regularly clean these bowls since they are plastic.
@@yourdigitallibrarian_story From what my vet said, some cats are more prone to acne (orange cats, usually), and since plastic is much more porous than metal or glass, bacteria gets trapped in there, even if running it through the dishwasher.
@@cpisarek4284 we don't have a dishwasher, and my cats are brown tabby mixes, one American longhair and one American shorthair both from same litter. I hand wash everything extremely well as I had always been taught, even more so taught when it was the semi truck. It just carried over to dishes. Then perhaps it's just the fact that he is a shorthair unlike his brother?
My kitties had acne, so I switched from plastic to metal bowls. The acne disappeared. I wish I had access to this information years ago. This video is very helpful and informative. I used an antibacterial scrub from the vet and scrub I did. Poor kitties. This method is so gentle and gentle on their delicate skin. Thanks for the video!
My cats had the same issue. And my vet gave the same advice, to stop using plastic food dishes. Plastic can absorb germs which can be passed to other cats. I use only ceramic or metal dishes which can be thoroughly cleaned.
@@Myzenliness that would have been really nice to know about 30yrs ago, I cleaned my cats chin when I was a kid with a wash cloth and had to squeeze out his chin sometimes. I'd sneak my moms alcohol or peroxide when he had a big infected looking one on it, of course he didn't like it but it was th only thing I knew to do, my parents REALLY weren't into spending money. They gave th cats a set of old heavy-duty plastic dog bowls to eat from. If I had known, I could have tried to do something about it, like sit in my dad's favorite chair to treat th poor cats chin and refuse to get up till I finish so he can stand there and see th cats discomfort at getting his wound treated and demand stainless steel or ceramic bowls for them
You’re right the main cause of feline acne is the use of plastic food and water dishes. I learned this year’s ago from my vet and switched to stainless steel and it cleared up within a few weeks, also that brush only scrubs the black tops off the vast majority of the acne is under the skin kind of like icebergs . Scrubbing the black tops off only makes it look better.
I'm 47 yrs old. And I've been rescuing cats since age 12. I've taken care of many sick cats. But none ever had blackheads, never. And this video is not showing black heads,it's fleas. Look closely, you will see them.
When my first cat got black chin, I went on Google and learned plastic could be the cause. So I bought metal bowls. No more black chin. My current ones are not as sensitive, which is a good thing since their cat fountain is made of plastic.
@@qt_suiren298 Ngl dirt seems much more reasonable I just saw that in the comments a lot of cat parents had to get pus out of their cats I thought the "pimples" were deeper rooted under the cars skin instead of in between the fur
Wow, those cats are real troopers, letting you clean their chins like that. A big thumbs up 👍 on giving a treat reward afterward for positive reinforcement!
@@BeckyNosferatu Mine was the same. but i found, with Milly she dislike the table, so i (got everything ready) then sat . laid her on her back, with her head by my knees, she relaxed so much quicker. i could hold on to her better. I took it slow, but for me/us it worked.
I also heard that plastic bowls increases chin acne in cats (since plastic bowls are easier surfaces to harbor bacteria). You might want to consider switching to glass, steel or wooden bowls.
I have a stainless steel cat water fountain. I’m going to try that toothbrush if my cats ever get blackheads again. Switching from plastic food and water bowls to glass, ceramic, or stainless steel containers goes a long way to preventing cat acne.
Yep, I just bought two sets of bowls for my guys from dollar tree. I just run through the dishwasher and they get cleaned and sanitized and I don't have to worry about pesky acne. Our tuxedo kitty had the worst. Now no issues!
I have been a veterinary nurse for over 25 years and I still get excited when a cat comes in with acne we will fight for the job it is so satisfying..... ..
How was the process? Thats my dream career but i cant afford the school and i dont qualify for financial aid :( but i have been learning on my own about all kinds of animals, i know i could just say it and not have any experience but, point is, how can i become a veterinarian nurse? Lol
@@minacarkacer hiii im a vet tech!! So school is one route for sure. The other alternative that ive seen is starting off as a kennel technician. Basically you just clean after patients kennel, exam room, clean the hospital etc. if youre comfortable with restraint, they will not hesitate to pull you aside for some extra help. And if they see potential in you, more than likely will give you that opportunity and you can work your way up to become a technician through experience. Edit: also volunteering at your local animal shelter/rescues would look good on your resume, regardless of whatever experience you did there. It just shows you are interested in the field/animals
@@minacarkacer you have to go to university to be a veterinarian. A veterinarian technician usually goes to a technical school, not university, but you do need post secondary education. You can talk to people who are already in this career either at a veterinarian's office or an animal shelter. Talking to a local animal shelter can be a way to find people in careers related to animals. You can also volunteer there to get experience working with animals. It looks good on school and job applications to have volunteered somewhere, as well. Self-education is an excellent way to get a head start, but it unfortunately won't help you get a job. Does your high school have people who help with career planning? Mine did and they can be quite helpful.
@@kristypenner2753 i mean my highschool did but honestly, my young mind never thought i was going to be able to go to school for 8 years to be a vet and i went to culinary school after highschool since it was straight to the point and no other useless classes needed. I talked to my cat throughout the whole video. He was unusually quiet when I asked him if he wanted me to “get his cat acne” 😹 He let me do it all the time in the past…and he LOVED IT.
Hello, cats eat eat birds and catches mouses, if they eat human made food, (like dry food or almost anything from cats grocery section) this unexpected food from their nature behavior can makes these acne which i will explain next. Just like humans, cats can get their mouth dirty and i can see most of the after meals, cats starts instantly licking their paws and moving it around their face (face wash attempt) so if they can skip this part due to instantly wanting to play with other cats or being interrupted or worried or sick or too much spoiled and wanting to sleep with their mouth dirty because they are used of their owners cleaning them wich can really effect this behavior of the "after meal cleaning". You don't beleive me ? Just check your cat under jaw straight after a nice wet meal and check the dirt by yourself before they clean it with their hands and tongue. To avoid this thing i have no idea, it's just some house cat mark, so just try to clean them when you have time or do not worry because i'm sure that they will get back to their natural behavior of "after meal cleaning instinct" once they miss the human cleaning. @@sofieneelphil4407 I'm glad you have given this thought, rather than going along with the term "acne." The creator said in a comment they use ceramic bowls. My cat's "acne" was not acne at all. It's tiny scabs. It's an allergic reaction to the cat food. Any time a brand changed their recipe/ingredients, she would "break out" and I'd have to start bringing home new brands to find one she could tolerate. didn't need to check her teensy scabs (the size of blackheads) because the vet identified them. But if someone wants to test? Take a removed bit and out it on a dish or whatever. Put a drop of hydrogen peroxide on it. If there's blood, the peroxide will start fizzing. (Never out peroxide on a wound, human or animal - research has discovered it does damage.)
My now 13 year old kitty used to have awful acne on his chin when he was young. HUGE blackheads. I would clean his chin with a washcloth and he loved it. He must have been so itchy. We ended up finding that it was the metal bowl that was bothering him. We switched to ceramic bowls and his acne cleared up in a few weeks!
That looks so much more gentle than scraping or using the flea comb and soap my doc recommended. Found major blackheads on my baby a few months ago so I switched to ceramic bowls but she still gets them. It’s so uncomfortable for her when I clean them off. I can’t wait to try this!
She might have a food allergy. I would switch to stainless steel bowls and wash daily. If that doesn't work, try a different food...lamb and rice formulas sometimes work.
@@2shadowcats2 that's what my vet said it was from. But I notice it yearly in spring so maybe it's a plant or something else. Kid Toothbrushes work good but I'm gonna look for the one in this video!
Whoa. Thats perfect! My cat has a moderately crusty chin from acne, never lets me clean it but loves the scratches and rubs. This could work if I ease her into it. Thanks for the tip 😁
@@AnglcaPyrtpAnglcaPyrtp i use metal bowls and my cats still gets acne, I've been switching foods to all kinds and the acne still persists:/ when I do manage to massage them out they come out as big as my face ones lol
My cat has acne as part of her inflammatory bowel syndrome (which is overall very mild, thank Bast). I use diluted iodine and a flea comb, and worry that it’s unpleasant for her, because it does have to be scraped fairly hard to get the blackheads off, and it’s a daily job, because otherwise they build up very quickly. I might investigate this brush!
I didn't know what this was on my kitty's chin :O I always thought it was flea bits (Which kept me frustrated and confused since he has no fleas anywhere and is protected.) Thank you! Will be cleaning his chin tonight!
Our fluffy boy Toto has had acne for years, and we sometimes try to clean him with the furminator brush. He only tolerates brushing for a minute or so before running away, and so he’s always got a dirty looking chin… thank you for the demonstration, will get a silicone brush and try again :)
There’s a “face wash” you can use on the chin. My cat had a bad breakout and Now it’s clear. Maybe you can get it without a prescription. Brand name- dermabenss.
If this brush doesn't work for you, I find a flea comb works extremely well. I'm going to try this brush as well though becuas my cat doesn't tolerate the comb for long!
Ceramic and plastic are porous. They gather and hold bacteria. Please switch to metal dishes. My cat had the same problem and as soon as I switched her chin cleared up and she's been fine since.
My mom, at 80 years of age, adopted a cat that had acne. I had never heard of it either before that. The vet recommended PHysoderm and it cleared up quickly. We simply washed her little white chin with a dampened facecloth.
@@SweetEssie It's not. I had 2 kitties - no fleas - but chin acne caused by wet food particles from their chins in the bowl, etc. I used a bit of Witch Hazel a few days in a row. Non-irritating.
we had a cat who suffered from really bad acne when she was younger and the vet just told us to use stridex pads. she had a white chin so it showed up really well. thankfully she grew out of it.
I love how you're gentle but firm in cleaning that. Like you gotta clean, but there's no need to squash the poor thing's face for it. And their paws were nicely resting on your arm, so I guess if the pressure is too much, they'll just press and you'll get the hint.
I'm fascinated by how calmly (and almost with relish) the sweetie lets it pass. With my semi-wild cuddly tiger I would have long lost both hands to his claws and teeth.😁😚😼
Yeah my oldest cat would destroy me if I'd try this (she doesn't even like to be picked up) but the youngest probably would be okay since all human contact is love for her.
My cat slapped me in the face the other day while I was grooming his chest hair. No claws but a paw hit my cheek lol. I can't groom his belly without losing a hand, but chin, I think he'd allow it. He loves chin scritchies. He's entirely too ploofy to get it all done by himself. My other 3 like belly pets. Cats have such unique personalities.
One cat I had years ago had real issues with it, to the point where the vet told me to shave his chin around once a week for several months. The poor thing, he was good as I turned him over cradling him like a baby as I shaved his chin carefully and then applied cortisone cream the vet prescribed. He looked a sight with a shaved chin. I had to do it for around 3-4 months. It's amazing he let me do it at all.
Thanks! This should help a lot. My cat's hairless so she gets acne all the time. I especially love how you mentioned the brush is gentle on their skin because my cat's skin is very sensitive. Great video!
you might want to consider using stainless steel or ceramic bowls for food/water if you are using plastic- my vet recommended using ceramic bowls and my cat has never had any struggles with acne- could just be your kitty tho :) good luck!

Good kitties! My oldest gets acne occasionally. He loves to be brushed/combed, tolerates his nails being clipped, anything else, forget about it. I’m going to try that brush, he may like that. What I’ve been using (pet acne pads) stresses him out.
My vet gave me something similar years ago. It was fancy 'stridex' for cats, imported from France. So this time, I used the skin care I had on hand, the ordinary lactic acid, and diluted it a lot on a cotton pad. My sweetie seemed to like it like a warm compress. I think just a warm compress would do it.
Indeed, if you have a pet with a serious acne problem using warm compresses first is a great help! This opens up pores, helps draw any gunk to the surface for easier cleaning.
Hey, it looks like your cats even enjoy this! The only thing I would say (for anyone who has a cat with this problem) go see a vet first to make sure that there are no underlying causes such as parasites, infections or allergies. Just some friendly free vet advice 😉

The only thing we know to do for her right now is put iodine mixed with water with a cotton ball on her skin to help break down the crusties on her skin. I do believe she has an autoimmune disorder though. No vet I've seen yet has offered any kind of special cream. 😔
@@RainbowGhoul31 I don't know what you feed your cat but I had a senior cat a few years back that kept getting infected nail beds. They were expensive to treat. I had this issue with two of my cats over the years. I found that Ceramic although recommended as a first line defense vs plastic to prevent chin acne, it is still porous and can harbor minute bacteria that can clog and irritate the pores of very sensitive cats. I had to use a high quality clear glass dish with my little girl. I was also advised to to clean the chin with a gentle antibacterial solution and use the lowest dose of Benzoyl Peroxide gel. Once I finally switched to glass and used the medication to clear the black heads up, they never came back.
My cat would take my life if I even tried this. Props to you for having such amazing mutual trust! I even look at my cat the wrong way and she’s ready to fight 😭😭😭
I agree that the cats seems to really be diggin the “acne cure” that silicone toothbrush you’re using is a great idea! And whatever the stuff is that they’re eating/licking they seem to enjoy almost as much as they enjoy the toothbrush! I will have to check my friends cat more thoroughly next time b/c I thought what those black spots were was flea poo. Maybe I was wrong, who knows!?!!
You can easily tell the difference between cat acne and flea poop by smearing it on a wet paper towel. The flea poop will have a reddish tint to it while the blackheads will just be brownish.

I have 6 cats also. 1 gets acne. Our vet recommends this brush & to use a mild solution of dawn dish detergent to cut the oil in the skin. Rinsing well & patting dry. Daily for a week or so. It stays gone for months.
Helps to switch from a plastic bowl to a metal bowl if you haven’t already for your cat’s food and water! And keeping the bowls clean and elevated a bit also helped my cats.
I've been using a kid's small toothbrush, or every soft bristle toothbrush to clean my kitty's chins. My fluffy cat tetnd to get cat acne on her chin the most. I do it about one a week. :3
Brilliant! I have two cats with acne and as I also foster it seems to be a bigger issue then I could have thought. This seems like a perfect method! One of my foster kitties had acne so bad the vet prescribed a medical shampoo but it can cause a stingy or burning sensation and I hated using it. Definitely adding a few of these toothbrush to my arsenal!
My cat used to get this. It immediately went away when we switched from a plastic water dish to a metal water dish. The bacteria builds in the pores of the plastic and can cause chin acne in cats when they drink (and sometimes splash that bacteria-filled water on their chin). And the porous nature of the plastic means that no matter how much you change the water, unless you're disinfecting the bowl each time, the bacteria just grow again in the fresh water you fill it with. I'm sure this isn't the cause for all cacne, but maybe this will help someone!!
I wash my cats glass bowl every day. I use silocone gloves when I clean it and rinse it off in the sink with very hot water and let it dry. Then I fill it where he finds it in the same place on a tray with bottled distilled water.
I bought one of this toothbrush because of your video and it works! Thank you so much, I had tried hazel witch and warm water for awhile but i had hard time cleaning off their blackheads. This is so much easier.
after seeing so many "Cat's being Jerks" compilations here on YT now seeing this gentle and very well behaving beautiful Cat's blows me away!! pretty nice tool btw
@@highstepnightowl I changed my cats bowl to ceramic a few years back, it did help clear it out ! He still has some spots left but I think it's because he goes crazy outside 🤭
Wow, I'm surprised you still have all of your fingers! If I tried to do that to our cat (or even tried to hold her in that position) I would be short an arm for sure. 😂
I had no idea cats got acne... so I looked it up! It might be worth mentioning that anyone who has a cat with acne should check with their veteranarian because acne **CAN BE** a sign of other skin conditions such as mange, tumors or even leprosy (this is according to PETA). I just checked all three of my kitties... all is well. Thank you for this video though, now I know to keep an eye out!
Love that you had no idea cats could even get it but then lectures the rest of us. You think only people with cats without acne know how to Google?! Obviously, it was the first thing we did as well when we noticed acne on our babies.
@@IamaDanish I don't really understand your negativity toward my post. I wasn't "lecturing" anyone, I just said that I didn't know about it until this video so I went to look it up, and posted what I saw on the sites that I read about it. Does it hurt to check with a vet before just pulling out a toothbrush? I had absolutely no idea they could even get it and that it could be a sign of other things. Does it hurt to mention that? Is that "lecturing" to mention it? I told them THANK YOU for the video and I meant that sincerely... so I don't know what your issue with me is.
@@amydavis4945 It's assuming those of us with cats with acne are "just pulling out a toothbrush" before checking with a vet or at least doing the same basic search you did first, I have an issue with.
Your relationship with your babies is so sweet and obviously trusting. I guess I should have known that cats could get blackheads! If you have pores with hair anything is possible.
My kitty gets this too, I clear it for her often and it’s quite satisfying to do. She doesn’t like me holding her head up but she’s a good girl and she lets me do it ❤️
My cat has cat acne and I’m going to have to try this! She cleans herself, and uses a ceramic bowl, but she always has soooo much acne T__T Such a teenager haha
This toothbrush is amazing! I will order one for my puppy. I use the silicone finger and a small bristle brush. But, this one really does the trick! How cute are your kitties! Love them! No fleas, please! LOL!
