How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Hey pal. Checking in from North Central Illinois here. Big fan of your page. I just wanted to say that I really thought it was cool how you overlaid the 4 bits of video of you sweeping up the floor of the first bin. That was cool to watch. I work for FS Grain at one of our elevators here in Illinois and sweeping is one of my favorite tasks around the elevator.

Love the flat floors in the bins, our first bins had the corrugated floors, real pain to clean out and grain always sifted under the outside edges.
@jeffgixer5185
@jeffgixer5185 5 лет назад
Both of these bins have corrugated floors in them. Most grain bins do because that is how you move air through them. If the floor is solid how would you move air through the grain?

Hey,... Did you know, if you follow behind the sweep auger, work the corn to the sweep with a broom and scoop it over the sweep auger with a shovel, then clean up with the broom and scoop again. Keep following the sweep auger that way, when you are done, the bin is clean
@HowFarmsWork
@HowFarmsWork 4 месяца назад
4x the effort of letting it go twice around the bin and sweeping it once in 15 minutes when you’re done. Never have to lift a shovel. There’s a good 300 bushels it leaves behind after the first pass.

Something that might make the sweeping faster. I'm a FF and we have to wash and clean the floors all the time. We use basically a long squeegee on a broom handle. We angle it slightly and just walk. It pushes it over based on the angle. If you did that here you could just walk the perimeter and spiral inward. Great video!

I've found that a mud rake ( the tool for spreading out concrete) works really well. You are pulling the grain instead of pushing it or scooping it

We clean out our bins the same way. I've seen sweeps go around the bin way faster than that. We have safety stops that stop the sweep every time around just in case somebody falls or something like that. You have to lift the sweep over it. Thanks for the video.

For those that are complaining about how to "clean the bins properly" and saying he should do it this way or that. When you get out there to his place maybe then he'll do it your way but until then, his bins not yours so if he wants to use a water hose and to float the kernels out it's his call on it.

I had a thought about your air gage for your axle weight. When filling on the drive axles release your brakes on the truck and then on the tandem axle release those. It should give you a better reading then if the brakes are set. It worked for me when I used to haul corn syrup in a tanker.

If you wait for the sweep to level out you can do the bin with a couple snow curling shovels. Or you can get a cycloidal separator and SWEEP the bin out while sucking all the chaff and crack and blowing it out at the same time.

I agree with you, why pay for a power sweep system if your going to opt to hop in and do manual labor each and every time and have to don PPE. Sounds a bit redundant to me. When the power sweep has finished then go in and tidy up. That’s like taking the weed eater to the yard before you mow.

You can add a hinged flat piece of steel by the door mounted to the sidewall so when the power sweep comes around it hits the flat iron and can't proceed any further for safety. My sukup bin came with one mounted to the bin and I have the power sweep such as you.

Yeah don't listen to those people telling you to clean up behind the sweep. It really isn't that much faster. It saves you the time it takes for the sweep to make one or two extra rounds, probably 5 minutes. In return however, you are doing a lot less manual work and putting much less stress on your body. Definitely keep doing it the way you are regardless of what others say; it's the smart way.

I must say, the techniques you used for emptying the bins and making this video were good ones. After your safety video from a few weeks ago, I can see why it would be a bad thing to be inattentive inside the bins, especially if the power sweep is running. You had mentioned last fall that the flooring of the Sukup bin was reputed to be a bit harder to clean. It did not look like it was appreciably more difficult from the camera's vantage point. (It also looked like we had multiple Ryans in the bin at one time, so looks can definitely be deceiving.) Do you still have any grain stored at the satellite farm along Hwy U near Burton? I guess the coast is clear for the new crop when it's time to harvest, but you have to get it in the ground first! Thanks for the video.

You're smart to not be in the bin with the sweep running. I know a guy who's missing half of his calf muscle because he was by himself in the bin with the sweep. The only time saver I can see for you is to clean away from the edge when you're in between loads. Fun video as always.

Not as much as you'd think... When the bin first starts filling and grain is hitting the floor, some works its way down thru the perforations, but not much, and as soon as the floor is covered by a couple inches there's no movement so lil to none comes down at that point. Once the fans are running, they push it up into the grain some away from the perforations in the floor the air comes in thru. The stirrators augers don't go all the way down to the floor, they stop about a foot above it, so the grain on the floor is pretty much undisturbed until the bin is emptied out. Most of the dust that gets thru the floor perforations happens as the bin is unloaded and swept, both by the power sweep and by hand, when grain is actually moving across the floor... So short answer, not much. Later! OL J R
