Be sure to leave seat belt pulled all the way out until its dry or it can go mouldy,it happened at a dealership I worked at.

Before you steam it, mix up some detergent and water, and saturate the belt.(sponge or rag). Let it soak to break up the grease and dirt. You can use some kind of dishpan and a scrub brush to clean the belt. Rinse it once or twice. A clean belt makes a lot of difference on retraction.

My favorite part was where you were stroking the seatbelt.

Thank you man. I appreciate the video. Best advice. I have that same steamer and didn't realize it's potential. It made my seat belts very clean. Again, thank you.

You can also try cleaning the seatbelt guides; the one on the seat and the one right before it goes into the panel. Crud builds up on those plastic guides too.

I have a VAX steam mop which also breaks down into a handheld steamer with a ton of attatchments and I swear by it. The most cost effective way to clean without chemicals.😀

Dang man, thanks for the tip! All 3 of my cars have a tan interior with absolutely gross tan seat belts. I've tried a few different things to clean them but never thought about steam cleaning. I'm going to give that a shot for sure!

One of the 'orange' hand cleaners works well on steering wheals, gear shifts, ETC.

I did the same thing using a hot bucket of water, a scrub brush and a bit of laundry detergent. Pull the belt out until it stops and put a clip on it, like a wooden clothes pin or small binder clip to keep it from retracting. Place the bucket of mild detergent water in the seat making sure it won't tip or spill and place as much of the belt inside of the solution and gently scrub as much of the belt as you can. You can also use a spray bottle for areas of the belt that can't be placed into the bucket. Towel dry as much of the cleaned belt as possible. I managed to drape my belt on the corner of the opened door to speed up the drying process (be careful with the buckle around your door glass so you don't shatter or break it). Like 100PercentJake here, the belts in my vehicle are dark in color and hide a lot of dirt and grime. I was shocked as to how disgusting the water became. Just cleaning the seat belt made a huge difference in the way it retracts. I really thought I was going to resort to replacing or repairing parts to fix my belt retraction, so I definitely recommend cleaning as a first step.

I looked up how to steam clean sest belt, simply because I noticed a sticky/tacky feel to my seat belt on the deivers side. 🤢 and because mine are red, I'm sure to see a difference from what they are now vs when they're cleaned. Appreciate the video.

Give it a couple days to fully dry, cleaning it does work, did it to mine where it just never wanted to retract, washed them, still didn't work but after a few days they retract like new.

I once used some sort of furniture polish along the real, makes it slippery. Like you say it is all just dirt but there will be some in the mechanism

I think you can lubricate the seatbelt mechanism, which is something I'd like to try at some point. Right now I'm just in the habit of helping the seatbelt in. It's not awful in my car.

Why is this not titled "Sheldon cleans his Miata"? A few clean rags and some warm dawn dish soap in a spray bottle, might be a little faster for you and still no harsh chemicals. I'll have to give this a shot next time to see if it can pull out more of the unmentionables.
