*Please note - these are very old and worn so I am not worried by any surface scratches that may result from gentle scrubbing* If you are cleaning decorative plates or ornaments using this method, please use soft cloths**
I'm doing a spot of spring cleaning and I came across these very old vintage spoons that really need a good clean. They are very old and have probably lost some of their silver plate. They are Electro-Plated Nickel Silver which are usually marked ENPS or EP. They're really easy to shine up using this method which is really quick and avoids the need for harsh chemicals and lots of scrubbing.
This is a well known method using Bicarbonate of Soda, Aluminium Foil and hot water.
** Please be careful when using hot water from the kettle - use tongs to move items **

We've got a set of scalloped silver spoons inherited in 1983 from my Grandmother and they still sit in my Father's dresser, unpolished. I'll definitely use these tips, thank you.

What's the significance of the foil? I assume it does something.

I believe it is an electrolytic reaction.

Yes!! This is how I have always cleaned my granny's silver, that was passed down to me. Never fails me and so much less work than getting it all out and using silver polish. Brightest blessings.

Aluminium is normally covered in aluminium oxide making it unreactive. An alkali such as sodium bicarbonate dissolves this oxide layer so aluminate goes into solution. The raw aluminium left behind is a powerful reducing agent when in contact with the silver which converts silver sulphide or silver oxide back to silver.

Ooh, I've got a lot of these that I've picked up over the years. I see you have a cranberry spoon and was that a stilton one too ? I'm definitely going to try this out, thank you 😸
