Cleaning out my Pond - What will I find?!

Here’s how I clean out my pond. It’s a look back to the heatwave conditions in the UK last summer when the hot sun was evaporating water from many places at a frightening rate. GP pumped out what little was left in one of his ponds in the hope of saving some lilies...then jetwashed it, finally refilling with rain water from one of his wells...a fun project in the middle of the day confirming the old saying "only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun "...Enjoy..

Random tip- EDPM self adhesive rubber roof flashing patches work really well for repairs on pond liners. Just make sure the pond liner is clean and dry and use the EDPM primer to help stick them together. I patched up a few holes in a customers pond a few years ago. Didn't think it would last but went back to repair the chimney this week and the bodge job is still watertight.
@TAFishing
@TAFishing Год назад
That sounds like a good tip. I guess it works like a puncture repair kit where you used to have to coat both sides and allow them to almost dry before pressing together.

So Friday night entertainment is watching someone clean out a pond...but it was really fascinating viewing. Biggest pond mistake I ever saw was a massive koi pond that a guy had dug so he could see it from his living room window. Only thing is he piled all the soil from the pond, between it and his living room window and he couldn't see it. Doh!!

Might be more like this to come...I'm not fishing in all our gross weather at the moment so I'm "fishing" through the Hard drives to at least put something up...I have plenty of fishing films but currently not a good time so I'm hanging on to them....I know how the other guy with the Koi pond must feel,I put one of our ponds under the boughs of an old tree !!...Oohh...leaf it out !!!

As far as algae (blanket/candyfloss weed) goes an excess of nitrates and phosphates are the main issue and these are mainly sourced from the breakdown of organic material during the warmer months but can also come from rain water particularly from big thunderstorms where the huge amounts of energy released by lightning breaks the nitrogen bonds in the atmosphere and allows it to attach to the water within clouds. As I'm sure you're already aware this comes mainly from the influx of dead leaves during the autumn so by putting a fine net or even a tarp across the pond during the autumn you can reduce this factor. Another source can be the runoff from the lawn if you mulch your cuttings, to reduce this you either need a catchment between the lawn and the pond or at the very least some filter plants such rushes or sedge. Another tip is to pull the dying lilies out during the late autumn when they start to submerge. A passive method of controlling algae is to get a small bale of barley straw and have it float around in the margins where it is exposed to both water and air, no one is quite sure why this works but studies show that some byproduct of the barley straw rotting prevents the algae from reproducing, it won't kill an existing bloom but it'll stop it getting worse. It does take a few months to get going though so more of a long term fix than a short term solution

If you throw a mesh bag full of barley straw (about a hessian sack size from the size of your pond) it will gradually help control the algae issue you were having. High temperatures, high pH and high sunglight are conditions it loves. Goldfish and certain types of loaches will eat it also. There are a number of chemical treatments for pond algae as well. Apart from emptying the pond and scrubbing it out, they tend to take a while to work.

Snap, I did a bit of a de-sludge myself last year, the duckweed and blanket weed were eating far to well. like you I have a leaf fall problem (netting is not possible) and my pond depth in 3 years went from 3 1/2 feet to barely ten. Water lilly (escarboucle) despite about 20 Kg of beach boulders floating on top. Mind you i do have crucian's which bread like stink and cross with goldfish. Water lill's did get stressed in the heat, but despite all my worry's everything in the garden survived.

Great video as always!!! Them sump pumps will work forever! Anyone interested in buying one follow these steps to make your pump last. When you finish with the pump, flush water with no bits through it to clean any slug out the pump and bagging. Also try not to use them in sandy ground. This blocks the impeller, guard and bagging. I've had mine for 7 years and its used daily on burst water mains. They will drain the excavation of a 4 inch cast iron water main at 5/6 bar pressure all day. Hope this helps anyone looking to buy one

I did ,but I couldn't fill it up to the top as the well was low in the drought also...I was told by a farmer up the road not to let the well ever dry out or the walls could collapse and I could get ground movement,hence the fact I never filled it up to the top. Its actually overflowing now with all the rain,and the drainpipe feed I have linked to it that runs off the roof...Either too much in winter or too little in summer.I never had it in extremes like this say,10 years ago,the level was more constant, its a sort of indicator of how the climate change has happened. I have had it dry out totally a few summers ago.
