Cleaning Out Our 85 Year Old Tobacco Pack House | January 2024 

Y’all! Hitler was from the early 1930s to the 40s. He rose to fame after the parliament burned. It was very chaotic time in Germany. People fell for him. I’d put a piece of glass over that table top to preserve that paper that is real HISTORY! That is the coolest thing ever and worth some serious money to the right person! LOVE THAT. I’d keep it for the historical relevance though for my kids future. Ice cream box like my papaw had in his service gas station ……I got a many brown cows out of his box ….. Love love watching you guys going through this showing the old days stuff …when I was a kid I saw a neighbor cut their boys hair with the same clippers I don’t kn it they were for man or animals lol….. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your videos……my dad was born in 1919 my mom in 1928 your grandpa age my dad did tobacco a several yrs when I was a kid probably till I was around 12/13 .i was born in 1951 watching you guys is like living my young life over watching my mom do the things you do …..my dad did jus like your grandpa he’d jus rig up anytg jus to get by my mom would be so aggravated and I remember my brother would try go behind daddy and fix things I’m sure my sister-in-law is glad my brother is a fixer of everytg ………..my grandpa passed when I was six but I can remember so so much about him and being around him in his little store .it was a old wood store it had fleetwood coffee painted on the side I’m so glad I’ve got pictures of his little store we still have the land it has a little restaurant on it now it was income to help my mom out with the rent from it .we lived in Georgetown Tenn ….and mom and dad were from Ooltewah Tn / Chattanooga I love watching the kids planting and growing their own garden and flowers their following in your footsteps for their future .❤️❤️❤️❤️

The little wheel on a stick I used to use for tracing patterns when making dresses. I am 65 and I can remember getting ice cream out of old freezers like that when I was a kid. I had a walker like that for my kids. They are in their mid to late 40s now. Lot of fun looking at all the finds!

This video is testament to what people used to do to get the job done without having the “ proper” equipment. Like my own Daddy, your Grandpa used what he had to take care of and provide for his family. You don’t find many men like that nowadays. Good job by your entire family. How refreshing ❤. God bless

As a woman of 71years who has recently given up independent housekeeping due to my health, may I offer a suggestion? Consider taking a picture of the old preserved foods and making a photo album of sorts in tribute to your elders. Then pitch those old food jars before they become toxic and dangerous to one of the kids or an animal. Best of luck to you!

Back then you didn't have a tractor supply house, your grandpa was brought up throw away nothing in case you had to make it work. He would be and enjoyable man to sit down with and chat, not only the history but he could teach us how to do things a simple and fast way.

Y’all make me feel so old! I was a child in the 1950’s, a teenager in the 1960’s, and graduated from high school in 1969 - it just doesn’t seem that long ago to me! 😊

We live on my husband's Grandaddys land the Old house was built in 1864 we've found a lot of interesting pieces ourselves!

I enjoy your videos. Concerning the news paper article stuck to the table, Hitler came into power in 1933. World War 2 offically started in Europe in 1939. We (USA) entered the World War 2 in 1941. With that said your newspaper article falls between those years. The ice cream cooler in the back of the building is worth investigation, either to restore or sell to a collector. Same with the typewriters. They are highly sought after if they are manual and condition doesn’t really matter. The ruffled wheel cutter on a stick can be used for pie crust as you stated but also for cutting pasta, cookie dough and pastry dough. Again, thank for doing what you do and keep up the good work and content.

That building is a full of treasures that are probably worth a fortune on the antiques market.

I used one of those walkers for my children. They were born lastest one 1975. Those walkers were a life saver!

Those old canning jars, pop bottles and other old items are worth money to an antique dealer. I know, because I am a retired dealer, so don’t throw those items away until you get them looked at by a dealer. Call any nearby antique mall and they can hook you up. The shoe repair iron was called a “last”. We had a couple of those when I was a kid. (I am. 85 now.)

Very interesting video , memories that we all have , shared & threw out ! My grandfather had a shack with old things I went thru back in the early 70's & yes I still have some things 50 plus years ago , I enjoyed all of these things ! Stay safe ! Antiques today are worth money , be careful to save these items !

That sausage grinder is priceless. I remember my MawMaw grinding sausage with one just like that one.

GOD does provide what you need and you needed screens and you found what you needed, AMEN!!!! I live in my grandfather's house too, its wonderful to have and from t.v's to furniture and tools, blending yesterday and today is awesome to see his great grandchildren use what he had. Pretty cool. I'm tickled y'all are going to save the building. That is a stringing horse for tobacco. We still have a couple of those around. The table is probably a tobacco grading table. We have one from back then. They would grade out the tobacco as they took it of the sticks after curing and before going to market. Cool finds for us NC tobacco folks. Countrybee

My grandmother had 2 of the wheelie things you showed. She used one for cutting pastries, and another one for tracing sewing patterns onto fabric. My momma had one of those grinders she used to grind beef. She wasn’t so successful at making sausage, though she tried. 😂 Thanks for sharing this project. It was like a step back in time.

Love watching the clean out of Grandpa’s shed. Reminds me of my grandads shop. Our family lucky enough to have his blacksmith tools. He made wagon, wheels, and barrels to store stuff in. An Eastern KY coal miner/farmer. Good memories!

Seeing that tobacco tie stand ,brought back found memories when we use to prime it and hang it in the barnes in NC….

We called them a tobacco horse. Used to hand tie tobacco on a stick to put in a barn to be cured

my grandpa used to cut my hair with those clippers. it was used for the back of your neck. with lots of talcum powder~! also i do recall tropical jars like those my dad would use for nuts and bolts. ; the same way with a good tool. if there is nothing wrong with it.. use it. nothing like a good hand tool i noticed the sled on the wall. we use to go sled riding and had to wax the rails ~! rickety but fast...so amazing to share what you's had found. i wanted to make you laugh and say. i was using the CC when you were describing the tobacco. and it came up ''Debaca''~!! thank you for sharing some sentimental history with us great job team TG! ty ❤‍🔥

Back in Grandpa's day you saved and used everything even us that was raised by folks that lived in the depression have a tendency to save. I'm 73 and I remember mom had a pair of those hair clippers. I've still got some jars my mom canned I keep going to empty them out but not yet.

The tobacco rack would be a great quilt holder. I have an old fire hydrant. Mine has a copper out side and the glass tub still inside. That was a great video. Lots of special memories.

That is for hair cuts I have one in the box , when my in-laws passed we found them in their belongings. I love the old treasures you found.

I made a comment on your Video. I used to live like this up in North Dakota. We lived off grid. I had my haircut many times with that hand clipper. Yes, it would jerk out half of the hair. Some of the younger kids would end up crying.

Instead for pie crust I believe it's for putting the rubber splein around a screen door that holds the screen in .The ice cream freezer might bring a pretty penny to an antique dealer

That was a great video!! I am 68 years old and my dad cut my hair with one of those hand clippers. Yes it sometimes felt like it was pulling hair out by the roots. Yes that is a pie crust cutter my mom used one. My house was built in 1861 and off the basement is the old root cellar. when I bought the place 42 years ago it was full of old kerr atlas and ball jars many of them more than 100 years old. Atlas was on business from1902 till 1964. I am still using most of those jars. I have my grandparents old hand crank meat grinder and still use it. It will keep you young and in shape. I really like the way you folks honor the past. Please share as much of your memories with your children as you can! I taught1840 farm life skills for many years and even now when I need something to make do or fix whatever, I just stop and look around and 9 times out of 10, I can make it work without having to go to the store. The old folks were amazing and I'm proud to have learned so much from them. I love your videos and you have a sweet little family.

That old grinder, I'm willing to bet that it's also been used for Chow Chow or kraut. I'm 62 and I remember plenty of years of cranking one of those until my arms felt like they were going to fall off my shoulders! 😂

That's a tobacco stringing buck or horse as some people called it. It was also used when taking tobacco off the stick when they stung it by hand. That table may have been used to take tobacco off the stick on that was strung on an electric stringer. When I cleaned out Grandpa's packhouse, I found one of Daddy's blue wool navy uniforms from World War II and the Winston-Salem Journal that reported the Lawson Family murders on Christmas day in 1929 in an old trunk. Those homemade hitch pins remind me of me. Give me an old wore out bolt that's big enough and I'll make a hitch pin out of it. I found a half gallon Tropical jar in the basement that Mama had but unfortunately, it was cracked. If you can fix the floor, it's definitely worth saving.

Oh I feel your pain with cleaning out this building. We live on my husbands families old farm and it’s building after building filled with stuff. They did save everything! This is great, thanks for sharing.

I found some home canned peppers from 1998 in my dads cellar. We just ate them and survived. They weren’t bad if I’m being honest. 😂

I'd poly-cote that table top to preserve that paper. I've used a tobacco stinger like that growing up more times than I can count. How we strung up all our loose leaves off the floor at the barns. That cooler looked like the ice cream coolers that were at Lawsonville elementary way back when I was going there.

My husband has nearly every tool there is for everyday mechanical work. Most came from yard sales. He's the go to for family working on mowers or cars. 😂 That thing is to string tobacco. I'm sure many knew that. The kids job was to hand tobacco to the person, usually a mom or grandma with that super human skill, 3 leaves. You best not slack or get distracted. 3 leaves, not 2 and not 4 but 3. I can remember doing that. (I'm 64). Hard work for the grown ups but great ham biscuits and lots of family, picking and laughing anyway. A really good memory. And canning jar Christmas! My mom has given me a lot of old jars. I put a small amount of gun oil on the typewriter keys if they get stuck. If the arm is bent then forget it. Sometimes just brushing the arms and typeset out to get the 60+ years of gunk out will make it work. The color green on grey sells pretty good online.

I live in my childhood house that I took over from my mom in 2002 and we actually had to do the same thing a few times and be careful what you get rid of because I felt like I got rid of stuff that I shouldn’t had now that I’m older, but it is what it is but we still are always decluttering. I have a garage that I need to Declutter It’s walkable but you know it’s got a lot of boxes in there that need to get cleaned out. It’ll happen in the spring when it’s a little warmer my husband don’t like the cold

Love your videos.....just seen this one, brings back memories from my life being raised on the farm. You need to refurbish the old table and keep the newspaper on it, that`s history ! I know back in those days everyone did things different, but I think you may have misspoken about the single tree use. I`m saying that because I actually remember using them and helping my grandfather gearing up his work horse to plow the tobacco fields and garden. You stated that the middle hitch point hooked to the horse and the outer points hooked to the plow. Well, we used ours just the other way around and doing so the outer hooks kept the chains from the gear on the horse spread out and didnt rub the chains so much on the hips of the horse. Our single trees was longer than what you showed because my grandfathers horse was the size of a Clydesdale, he was huge, a gentle giant. I mean no disrespect to what you said just thought you may have gotten your words messed up, or if not then I guess I`m telling you how we used them here in Ky. Keep the videos coming.

You all got a lot cleaned out of the old shop of Grandpa's stuff. You never can tell when you might need something so hang on to it. You found lots of things you'll hang on to for way too long also but you never can tell. You do have a lot to do to put a new floor in the building. It's going to be lots of work but you have the equipment to do it. Stay safe and have fun with the project. Really enjoyed the video. Fred.

I’ve got a neighbor that has 3 buildings/barns full of things. I got our potbelly wood stove out of one of them. It’s over 100 years old. But it has so much, and they won’t let anyone come to just make an offer on things. This is my kind of cleaning out.

I love the grinder. I’m from Louisiana and my Maw Maw had a grinder like that. It brings back wonderful memories of helping my Maw Maw make Boudin which is a rice and pork mixture stuffed into a casing which is a sausage native to Cajun’s. We also ground lots of chicken for chicken salad. This video was great. Thank you guys for sharing

I like that Old Sawmill blade against the wall .... no I don't quote me on this but that stand I believe you would tie tobacco to that stick. That is an ice cream cooler.. I remember many of days of using a screwdriver and a chunk of wire for a hitch pin.. now when my Paw passed away, we quite a few things to clean up... I know how you feel folks

The round thing with the sharp wheel is what people used to make spots to run their leather or sinew through to make leather out of aniimal hides to use for many things. My mom has a butter churn with animal hide on the bottom of it and it still has it on it even though she doesn't churn butter in it. It's lasted probably 80 to 100 years. People made thing last and my grandfather has been dead since 82. my mom is 85 now!

It’s so good you’re fixing the building! I remmber old tvs and you had to go out to turn the antenna too! I still have an old fashioned antenna. I don’t ever watch tv but I have it if I need it. Works fine!

They call it a tobacco horse, to loop tobacco with. I use it a lot when I was young, working at home

You was backwards on the single trees. The plow or whatever was hooked to the middle and the horse was hooked to the hooks on each end by "tugs" that was attached to the horses collar. Enjoyed you post very much.

Reminds me of my Uncle. He was born in 1919 and never threw anything away. He even kept bent nails in case he needed them later. Those folks lived through the great depression and saw hard times. They knew the value of being self reliant and making due.

You should call an antique dealer and try to sell some of that stuff.
