MIke shows how stones are cleaned with muriatic acid. All my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing any type of work to consult professional help.
I had a sister in law that was giving me a hard time because she didn’t know you could clean the haze. I snuck up a few days before they got to the cabin and did use acid but very diluted. It was the only time she almost was wrong until she saw the hose wasn’t coiled. That’s a a great line about your brother.
Just a tip; for minor to average mortar cleanups on aged brickwork, use an electric power- washer(1500-1800psi)concentrating the wand on the 'bricks' (not on the grouting). It's fast & no acid or chemicals, just H2O!
so I know you have been doing this a long time and have experience. something you might want to consider is adding your acid to the water. it's a little safer that way. thanks for the video. Cheers!
i have this type of stonework/paving on a huge interior wall. the missus is giving me continual grief cos its filthy and impossible to clean with hands and brushes etc. Maybe I will try an acid wash, do you reckon acid or sandblast? I havent used a sandblaster and not sure if practical interior options for that
You should never pour muriatic acid first and then water. It creates fumes and high temperature from the reaction splashing the acid out of the container. I learned that in a chemistry college course.
Use a wire brush to scrape it off. Then make sure you have a proper cap over the top and a drip edge cut in so water doesn't run down the face of the stone. Most often, efflorescence occurs when water saturates.
That's Exactly How I Do it Except I Always Add Acid to Water Not the Other Way Around. I Also Shake Up the Mixture in Sprayer. I Noticed it Didn't Fizz Up Much on Cap Stones But Fizzed Up Like Crazy on the Rest. Acid Washing Chimneys Makes a Cloud of Acid Gas.. Sometimes You Come Around the Valley & the Fumes Make You Choke.. That Can't be Good for You.
Posting a Comment isn't Pestering.. People Have the Option to Turn Comments Off if they Don't Want to be "Pestered" By Them..Why Would I Make a Video When Mike Does Such a Good Job of it.. I Dunno if you Ever Got Choked By Acid Gas Coming Around the Back of a Chimney But it's Something I'm Careful Not to Do Again. Why Are You Pestering Me Over a 2 Year Old Comment Jaggoff!?
Mike Haduck Mike maybe you can answer this. I recently had some laja stone set on a walk way.the constructor put an excess amount of grout and is all over the stone. Will the muriatic acid work to clean it off or should I just use an iron brush?
+Juan Fraire like the video says some stones you can't use acid on. I personally very rarely use it. every situation is different, so I wouldn't dare to answer, I would probably do a side test on some of the extras to make sure, thanks mike
I have a newer natural bluestone patio (a year old) that now has what looks like dark black embedded stains only on one paver. All the others look normal. Also some rust spots. Would this method work to clean those stains or should I try something less invasive? Regular outdoor cleaners did nothing.
Hi Michelle, natural stone bleeds for a while, I am not a fan of using a acid, I would just try some water and stiff scrub brush first, acid could cause more damage then what your trying to fix, thanks Mike
What do you recommend to clean off chalky white residue on brick from old plastic window shutters? It doesn't appear to be paint per se, it appears to be resin pigment run off from the plastic itself (the shutters were not painted, they were white vinyl)
hey thanks for uploading this , i do quite a bit of masonary work and i always wondered how you use this stuff I have a few bricks i want to clean the mortar stain off ,l Layed the bricks a couple months ago you think it will still work??
I would do a couple samples with some old brick first so you know what happens at the end, too much will burn and too little will do nothing, some stone and brick you can not use acid, I rarely use it myself, thanks mike
Hello i am from india I'm Hubble request to u plz suggest us acid or chemical to remove cement from natural black basalt stone and give a natural shinning to stone.
@@MikeHaduck thanks for the reply Mike, it's not a lot just smears here and there almost like a paint layer thickness, you know the usual smear around the joints, nothing that could be chiseled out.
if you mix masonry cleaner with root killer can it corrode metal? I think one of them contains copper sulphate and the other phosphoric acid. I'm not 100% on this 'mythbuster' but I'd appreciate it if someone could reply
"You're gonna wanna use some eye protection, hand protection, and breathing protection." Guy in video: "I'm just gonna walk into my spray direction and give a hard brush of the acid-sprayed surface right in front of my face"
Can Mauriac acid be used on colored pavers that are faded to help revive their color? Have a red and gray pattern paver walkway and backyard and they really need reviving?
Okay so I'm trying to Clean Effrolecsence off a 12in split face block wall I've used SureKlean 600 NMD80 Ef-Fortress and more nothing has done the trick and Unifrax is on my ass any suggestions?
Hi Mark, usually if is does not come off with soap and water then water is getting into it and or behind it and it is always gonna keep coming back, I did a video called "Efflorescence what is it, (mike Haduck)" that is all I can tell you, mike
You haven't sealed it have You? Most manufacturers recommend waiting 90 days prior to sealing. It takes a while for that efflo to seep and block to to cure. If you did seal, you're going to have to strip it. Techniseal makes a great efflo remover.
Hi Dana, I am not big on a sealer for real stone or brick, sometimes it traps the water in, especially when it lays flat, every job like chimneys are different,,, everyone has a different opinion, I hope that makes sense, thanks mike
Will this work getting non-shrink grout off bluestone? We HAD a gorgeous walkway my husband fixed (cracks and chipped out mortar) but now most of each stone is covered and looks awful. By the way, he has already sealed it too. HELP!
Hi Carol, it’s a hard question to answer, if it does not come off easy with a scraper wire brush and a hose, you could grind it , maybe acid, but, I really cannot say anything will defiantly work, mike
Mike Haduck Masonry thank you for your fast response! I’m sorry to say he’s already used a power washer on it and nothing budged 😫! I’m afraid to use the acid personally, I’ll try a scraper and wire brush first. Thanks again.
Can I use muriatic acid to clean real coral stones on my exterior wall of my home? They are some areas that have mildew and algae. I already tried bleach but that didn’t work. Any advice I would really appreciate it.
@@MikeHaduck ah I'm dealing with removing remnant stucco on 100yr old brick that definitely wasn't glass surface as it may have lost its fire skin but can't determine without removing paint and debris safely
🦘🦘🦘🦘 ... I found this GREAT IDEA on another site & want to share it if anyone has this same problem & how to fix it. I had a terracotta pot with a wonderful indented fancy pattern etched into it when it was made, around the top & bottom sections of the sides of the pot. It had been well painted with thick black paint then sprayed over with a tough shiny, hard, silver paint over the black, but ONLY on one side of the pot!! I wanted to strip the paint to return it to pure terracotta again & fully preserve the pattern. ................ I read that full strength 🌿🦘EUCALYPTUS OIL🦘🌿 dissolves paint. I found a 50ml bottle in my cupboard & used an old toothbrush to brush in & massage into the paint: small amounts of pure Euc oil. I let it work into the paint, scrubbing it in. Soon the top silver layer dissolved away so I dripped on more oil & used old tooth brush to scrub into the black paint within the intricate etched pattern. Soon the black paint turned to tar like substance as it softened & mixed with Euc oil. I used a small wire brush & a few squirts of WD40 to scrub away the softened tar like thick black paint. WD40 will not work by itself on paint, only use to remove the tar like paint after Euc oil works. It does not take a lot of Euc Oil, use sparingly drop by drop. Clean brushes of build up if needed, with turpentine or WD40 & rub with old rag. Worked well. Used an angle grinder scrub pad on large smooth portion of pot. Wiped it with a good smear of Euc oil & left to soften, then used angle grinder with pad & it came off in one buzz. Cheers.
There's hardly any change on the topstones. Seems pointless there and a bit of overkill for the messy pointing which could have been pressure washed to clean too I think
Hi Peter, the laziest man always finds the easiest way, pressure washing ain't as good as everyone thinks and sometimes causes a lot of discoloration and damage, thanks Mike
All good man, your masonry work is beautiful! The problem with adding water to acid, it creates a vapor that can really damage your lungs, especially if you are above where you are mixing the two. I use about 5 to 1 water to acid and would never walk on the acid solution with leather boots since they absorb the acid. Your work is amazing though, you should be very proud of your skills.
This video is completely pointless! Doesnt show anything in detail of why its used, really doesnt show anything do before and after, and doesnt really even state why you use this stuff. waste of time!
Dont be such youtube cops with the gloves folks they are his hands not yours. Sheesh and it does not matter how you dilute it as long as its mixed it is a non explosive product .
OMG cannot believe these guys are foolish enough to use acid without proper Personel Protection equipment like Googles,Gloves, long sleeves and walking on the wall whilst spraying it. Do not not use acid like this please.
LOL using acid will kill any vegetation for 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep for up to 3 years, it would have been better to power wash felles. Not saying you didnt do a good job just stating the facts of the process because I use to do it for a living.
Mike, I’ve been watching your videos for several years. You’ve always said you can do your work without acid. You show an expert (brother) using acid and all the smart Alec’s come out of the woodwork, nitpicking in a fury. Gee whiz!
