In this video I'll explain you how to clean black tarnished silver items with hot water, baking soda and aluminium foil. Try it Tony! Its a very safe and easy method. I'm sure it is going to work for you!
So my wedding ring turned black and it stayed that way for two years now. I tried everything but nothing worked. Today I found this video and followed the instructions. It worked as charm! My ring looks 100 times better than what it was. Thank you so much!
Just a little change in how it works. The silver sulfide isn't bonding with the aluminum. The sulfur from the silver sulfide has a greater affinity towards aluminum, so the silver sulfide is turning into silver and the aluminum is turning into aluminum sulfide. The water and baking soda is turning this into a battery to get the reaction going.
When cleaning plated silver it is easy to strip off the plating especially if the plating is very thin. When cleaning solid sterling silver items there is very little danger of damaging the silver. I use an ultrasonic bath for cleaning silver items. The ultrasonic bath is less evasive to damage silver plating. In the ultrasonic bath you can use water with dish soap. The ultrasonic bath can also clean gold items, or most anything you put in to it.
Warning: this method and all others discussed in the comments can be very harsh on some silver especially antique silver, so be careful or you might end up blackening it even more, stripping the metal off silver plate or creating a white film on it.
First time feeling like commenting on some video. Just saw your video and tried cleaning my jewellery and was so happy that it really worked, first time you tube video was useful.thank you
I went in a swimming pool and my ring (that I had every since I was younger ) turned black and it’s been half a year and nothing would work, I just tried this and it has worked I’m so happy I seen this video!
Remember polishing mom's silver. My little fingers were thrashed with the chemical we used. Of course there were no gloves. I inherited the tea/coffee brewing set and now it's black. I will try this. Hope it doesn't fall apart since the tarnish might be very deep. Thanks
Thanks Stefan, I know this method and use it to clean my silver but glad that you made this video to share with others. You ended up with some very nice looking jewelry for your collection! Keep up the great work an again, thanks! GL & HH
Excellent video. Just a suggestion: if you use a larger bowl, you won't have to change the water as often 😉 I mistakenly bought TWO 5lb bags of baking soda from Costco, so NOW I know what I'll be doing today! I have hundreds of pieces of sterling silver jewelry and I can't wait to try this! I'm wondering if it would be ok for stones that are in a setting without glue, as well, since it's just a chemical reaction using oxygen. I'll try it with a labradorite ring that I'm not in love with.....thank you for this video!
Please help! I misread the instructions on my jar of silver cleaner and left my silver beads and bracelets in for 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds. How can I revive my jewelry?
Can you use a plastic pot or something instead of glass bowl? I am just so afraid of this exploding on me :o Also I have another problem - I've gotten a few cheap but got looking rings online but they turned bronze and left my fingers green in a matter of a few days- does this help for that as well?
You could do this so much simpler and safer for the jewelry. A bowl. Dawn dishwashing liquid, baking soda (or salt)and some aluminum. Leave it. I usually soak mine for a day. Rinse. DONE. No boiling, no scrubbing, no repeated treatments. No risk in ruining or damaging jewelry or delicate stones.
This was is faster and safe. All you need to use are tongs to remove it from the heat. The reason why it's so effective is bc the combination between the aluminum foil, salt, and boiling water create a chemical change which cleans the silver. He did it in a more complicated way. This lady on a blogging website said to bring water to a boil on stove top then turn it off; while still hot, place aluminum foil inside (using tongs or silicone gloves may be suitable for this step); lastly, add salt then add jewelry; you should see the black/brown tarnish fall onto the aluminum foil and you do not have to do anything but rinse it with cool water when its done. The stones inside the jewelry should be fine.
Hi there were can you buy the bottle of silver clean if you could tell me please I'd be very grateful a tip for you add salt to your mixture it will work better
My silver earrings turned black on one side n clean on one side after I put it the solution, I think some reaction happened, please can anyone tell how to remove the black part now.
I learned a lot.I just got lucky on at an estate sale and won 2 carved very dirty pieces from 1889 that are silver.WILL THIS METHOD WORK FOR WHITE GOLD OR YELLOW GOLD???
+ilonavp1984 En die ben je verloren? Er staat geen naam of datum in. Alleen kleine merkjes. Als je me kan vertellen waar je die verloren bent en dat klopt met waar ik hem heb gevonden, mag je hem terug hebben.
rishitiwary12 tiwary no bcz aluminium can't take the oxide layer from aluminium itself........as silver and aluminium readily take the sulphur but aluminium does it faster being much more reactive than silver.......
+OldMan Diggin For gold I just use the polish from this video. Most gold I find isn't tarnished as it is 14k or above. I found a 8k ring that had light tarnish, but a little polish made all the difference. Thanks!
it will be more effective if it's a bigger bowl and each jewellery is touching the aluminum. it's the electrolytic current from aluminum touching the silver that removes the sulfide and attach itself to the foil.
ok so this wont damage my necklace and ring.. i think. my necklace is 925 silver but the ring was a gift, made from when my partner was a student in collage. idk what was put into it exactly but i do remember the mention of sterling silver.
Hi Stefanr, I’m working on a new Cleaning TV Series for Ricochet TV Production Company (the makers behind The Repair Shop on BBC One) & we’d potentially like to feature this Video. What is the best way to contact you please?
Dang all this time I've been putting goddards silver polish on old silver and wiping it off. Instead of cleaning in 6 or 7 min, I could make a whole day of it, fun. And, AND, I would save $9.64 cents a year.
Does cleaning tarnished silver slowly rub off the silver over time? Like if I have a coin with nice markings will the markings eventually fade as I clean the tarnish off it?
@Akhil kaura it removed some parts of my ring that are natural color, my ring is original and custom made by my uncle and has the number and all but this method bruised my ring made me look fake
